Hi Everyone,

attached you will find the press release about yesterday's general
assembly. It has been released, so feel free to use/spread it.

The general assembly has been very successful (those who have followed
the assembly on IRC will already know the major points) but also very
tiring since we had little time and tried to use every minute we had.

You'll find some information about what we percieve to be the most
pressing tasks in the attached press release. Also it is my pleasure
to officialy announce that Raphaël Rousseau is now a member of the FSF
Europe and he will be working in the French chapter.

More information will follow once we have recovered, but I thought
some of you might be eager to hear what has been happening so I at
least wanted to drop you this note...

Press-release of the Free Software Foundation Europe
For immediate release

"Free Software Foundation Europe aiming for more coordination 
between Free Software Developers." 

(Essen) On May 6th 2001, the first general assembly of the Free
Software Foundation Europe took place at the Villa Vogelsang in Essen,
Germany. It was the first meeting of the members of the recently
founded sister organisation of the FSF (Boston,USA).  Representatives
From France, Germany and Sweden agreed on future areas of engagement
for the FSFE.

"Coordinating Free Software based organisations and establishing local
chapters throughout Europe is one of our primary long-term goals." says
Georg C. F. Greve, President of the FSF Europe. "So is beginning our work
as a competence center for Free Software, aimed primarily at journalists
and politicians who will be able to find authoritative information about
Free Software from the Foundation."

Most Free Software is released under the license of the Free Software
Foundation, the GNU General Public License. One of the first
projects will be to harmonize it better with local European laws in
order to keep up with current changes and developments.

The Foundation will also further Free Software in the educational
sector where it will seek to coordinate and strengthen efforts 
by organizations and individuals dedicated to that task. 

At the same date, the first general assembly of the FSF Europe -
Chapter Germany has taken place. 

"We want the advantages of Free Software to be known to almost everybody
in Germany. German developers are already playing a major role as
contributors to the GNU project and Free Software in general."
says Bernhard Reiter, German chancellor of the FSF Europe.
"The FSFE will help to leverage these efforts on a european level 
and make sure that we it will stay legal to develop Free Software for
all needs."

The Free Software Foundation Europe is the sister organization of the
Free Software Foundation created 1984 by Richard M. Stallman in the
United States of America. 

Main purpose of the FSF Europe is to coordinate Free Software
initiatives throughout Europe, to provide a Free Software
competence-center for politicians and journalists and to provide
infrastructure for Free Software projects and especially the GNU
Project.

"Free Software Foundation Europe strebt bessere Koordination zwischen
Entwicklern Freier Software an."

(Hamburg/Essen) Am 6. Mai 2001 fand in der Villa Vogelsang in Essen
die erste Mitgliederversammlung der FSF Europe statt. Es war das erste
vollständige Treffen der Mitglieder der kürzlich gegründeten
Schwesterorganisation der FSF (Boston, USA). Vertreter aus Frankreich,
Deutschland und Schweden einigten sich über die Gebiete für die
zukünftigen Aktivitäten der FSF Europe.

"Langfristig ist die Koordination von Organisationen für Freie
Software und die Etablierung der lokalen Vertretungen innerhalb
Europas eines unserer vordringlichsten Ziele." sagt Georg C. F. Greve,
Präsident der FSF Europe. "Ebenso wie die Aufnahme unserer Arbeit als
Kompetenzzentrum für Freie Software, welches vordringlich Journalisten
und Politikern zur Verfügung stehen soll, um ihnen authoritative
Informationen zu Freier Software zu ermöglichen."

Der Großteil der Freien Software ist unter der Lizenz der Free
Software Foundation, der GNU General Public License
veröffentlicht. Daher wird es eines der ersten Projekte sein, eine
besere Harmonisierung des Europäischen Rechtes anzustreben, um mit den
aktuellen Änderungen und Entwicklungen Schritt zu halten.

Die FSF Europe ist ebenfalls bestrebt, Freie Software im
Bildungssektor zu fördern. Daher wird sie versuchen, die Anstrengungen
der hierauf ausgerichteten Organisationen und Personen zu koordinieren
und zu stärken.

Am selben Tag fand die erste Mitgliederversammlung der FSF Europe -
Chapter Germany statt.

"Wir wollen, daß die Vorteile Freier Software jedem in Deutschland
bekannt sind. Deutsche Entwickler spielen bereits heute eine
maßgebliche Rolle als Teilnehmer des GNU Projekts und Autoren Freier
Software im Allgemeinen." sagt Bernhard Reiter, Deutscher Kanzler der
FSF Europe. "Die FSF Europe wird diese Leistung auf der europäischer
Ebene zur Geltung bringen und sicherstellen, daß es auch zukünftig
legal sein wird, Freie Software für jeden Zweck herzustellen."

im Jahre 1984 durch Richard M. Stallman in den Vereinigten Staaten
gegründeten Free Software Foundation.

"La Free Software Foundation Europe s'engage pour une plus grande
coordination entre les développeurs du Logiciel Libre."

(Essen - Allemagne) La première assemblée générale de la Free Software
Foundation Europe s'est tenue le 6 mai 2001 à la Villa Vogelsang, à
Essen (Allemagne). Il s'agit la première réunion des membres de
l'association récemment créée, soeur de la FSF (Boston, USA). Les
représentants de l'Allemagne, la France et la Suède se sont entendus
sur les futurs domaines d'implication de la FSFE.

« La coordination des organisations consacrées au Logiciel Libre et la
création de chapitres locaux à travers l'ensemble de l'Europe est l'un
de nos principaux buts à long terme. » a déclaré Georg C. F. Greve,
Président de la FSF Europe. « Nous commençons aussi notre action en tant
que centre de compétences pour le Logiciel Libre, destiné
principalement aux journalistes et aux responsables politiques qui
pourront ainsi trouver auprès de la Fondation un interlocuteur
de référence en matière de Logiciel Libre. »

Une grande partie des Logiciels Libres est diffusée sous la licence
créée par la Free Software Foundation, la GNU General Public License
(GNU GPL). L'un des premiers projets consistera à mieux l'harmoniser
avec les législations des pays d'Europe afin de suivre les évolutions
actuelles et futures.

La Fondation fera aussi progresser le Logiciel Libre dans le secteur de
l'éducation, où elle cherchera à coordonner et soutenir les efforts
d'organisations et d'individus qui se consacrent à cette tâche.

À la même occasion s'est tenue la première assemblée générale de
la FSF Europe - Chapitre Allemagne.

« Nous voulons que les avantages du Logiciel Libre soient connus du
plus grand nombre en Allemagne. Les développeurs allemands
jouent déjà un rôle majeur comme contributeurs du projet GNU et pour
le Logiciel Libre en général. » déclare Bernhard Reiter, chancelier
allemand de la FSF Europe. « La FSFE contribuera à accentuer ces
efforts sur un plan européen et cherchera à garantir qu'on puisse
continuer à développer légalement du Logiciel Libre dans tous les
domaines d'application. »

La Free Software Foundation Europe est l'organisation soeur de la Free
Software Foundation créée en 1984 par Richard M. Stallman aux
États-Unis.

Le but principal de la FSF Europe est de coordonner les initiatives du
