Hi,
Jim Killock came to speak at TechMeetup yesterday about the Open Rights
Group.
Open Rights Group campaigns on digital issues in the UK and are trying to
build up more of a presence in Scotland. They are campaigning for funds to
hire a Scottish member of staff.
Please note this work is referendum neutral - if we vote Yes, a Scottish
group is definitely needed and if we vote No a Scottish presence is needed
to work with the devolved Scottish parliament and separate Scottish legal
system.
Hopefully you can donate and/or get involved!
https://www.openrightsgroup.org/join/found-org-scotland
For those of you that could not make it to TechMeetup, a video of Jim's talk
will become available soon.
Iain.

Hi,
Our first mini workshop is tonight looking at Email Self Defence.
Bulk surveillance violates our fundamental rights and makes free speech
risky. This Themed Thursday at 57North Hacklab will teach you a basic
surveillance self-defense skill: email encryption. Once you've finished,
you'll be able to send and receive emails that are coded to make sure that a
surveillance agent or thief can't intercept your email and read it.
57North Hacklab is the Aberdeen Hackerspace. It is located at 35a Union
Street, in the center of Aberdeen City, and easily accessible by bus and
train. Parking is available, although very limited.
This is not a keysigning party, but keysigning will probably happen in an
ad-hoc manner. I didn't have time to prepare an actual keysigning party. If
you don't understand what this means, don't worry, you'll learn about these
parties tonight.

Hi,
I've been talking about this for quite some time and it's probably about
time it happened.
We are a new group of digital freedom advocates working to promote the tools
that allow you to live in the digital age, without restrictions being placed
upon you by governments and corporations, at a local and national level. As
members or supporters of Free Software Foundation Europe and as supporters
of Open Rights Group, we aim to draw attention to the social and political
aspects of digital freedom, share news and ideas, and plan future events and
campaigns.
We will work with Free Software Foundation Europe and Open Rights Group
(Scotland) to organise events in Aberdeen.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in, sign up to our
mailing list:
https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/aberdeen
Our next event will be Cryptonoise: 10th June, 17:00 to 19:00 in the Illicit
Still. See cryptonoise.org for more details. Do not believe anything you
read about it being in Cafe Nero, this is outdated information that is in
the process of being updated.

Hi,
We will be running an email self defence class as a "Themed Thursday" at
57North Hacklab on the 12th June. Themed Thursdays are open to non-members
of the hackerspace (although a donation is appreciated as we are using their
space).
You can find this on the 57North Hacklab calendar here:
http://opentechcalendar.co.uk/event/1510-email-self-defence-tt
I will be giving a short introduction to PGP and encrypting email and then,
if you've bought your laptop along, you should be able to send and recieve
encrypted emails before the end of the night and understand what the
limitations of PGP are so you don't get caught out.

Hi,
The crypto events (cryptoparties and cryptonoise) are now going to be run
under the local FSFE/ORG group and so the aberdeen-crypto list is being
retired in favour of this list.
For anything you would have posted to the aberdeen-crypto list in the past,
it now belongs here.
