FYI:
Please note that Susy explicitly asks participants to bring material,
and leaves me an open field for what I want to talk about.

Met Bruno Dias, Deputado do Grupo Parlamentar do Partido Comunista
Portugues in Lisbon yesterday, he spoke about a legislative proposal for
Open Standards that will be discussed in the next period by the
Portuguese parliament.
So I sent him some information and a plug for Certified Open.

Dear board
Please find attached my final draft of the principles of operation.
I have updated the logo.
I have made the terms and conditions sections clearer.
I have merged the trademark policy.
I need input regarding the trademark policy as it appears to include
quite a lot of information from the terms and conditions, some of which
is legacy information.
(a) Why is this so?
(b) Should we not simply refer to the T+Cs instead of quoting?
Apart from the issues highlighted above I believe this document to be
ready for formal review and potential release by the board.
Rod, Bob, can you please check this document for errors etc?
Regards
Shane

FYI.
Got some positive response to the Open Standards definition, see below.
Also got a short "I love it" reply from Susy Struble of Sun.
So I think we are on a good track.

Georg

What everyone should know about DRM (http://DRM.info)
Dear board
I think it's worth reading Steve Ballmer's comments in full here:
http://www.betanews.com/article/Microsoft_Scrambling_to_Explain_Ballmer_Com…
The two key quotes are:
"We happen to believe in what I'll call a commercial model for us,
because it's a little hard to rent the office space here unless we have
revenue, etc. But that doesn't mean there's one model that inherits the
Earth. We're saying as a commercial enterprise, we're engaged in
commercial software; there'll be other people who will choose, for
whatever set of reasons, and with whatever set of business objectives,
to engage in an open source approach."
"There are plenty of other people who may also have intellectual
property. And every time an Eolas comes to Microsoft and says, "Pay us,"
I suspect they also would like to eventually go to the open source
world. So getting what I'll call an intellectual property
interoperability framework between the two worlds I think is important."
What's interesting here is that he's using the language of commercial vs
Free Software, thus suggesting that companies engaging with Free
Software do not place a commercial proposition in their development and
deployment, a manifestly untrue statement.
Secondly, his second quote suggests that paying Microsoft for undeclared
patents is an "interoperability framework" for business.
There is quite a lot of overlap regarding the language he is using and
the language we will use to launch CO. We need to ensure that we take
this into account during the publicity phase.

Hi all,
for your information:
I've had several interactions with our friends from ECIS (Douglas
Gregory, Charlotte Thornby) about getting Thomas Vinje to Rio for the
IGF and have him explain the CFI ruling, why it is good, and how the
internet is in danger from standards abuse (essentially the new
complaint). ECIS is also working on a brochure on the issue.
So if the Certified Open flyers would pick up from the antitrust case, I
think there might be quite a bit of synergy possible.
Also offered myself to chaperone Thomas Vinje a bit at the IGF, and will
suggest his name for speaking opportunities.
Regards,
Georg

FYI: Update from <http://www.intgovforum.org/>
Meeting Point/Village Square: Participants wishing to reserve a space
for their institution should contact the IGF Secretariat. Small stalls
will be made available for interested institutions. Depending on the
demand, interested institutions will be asked to either share stalls or
take turns. The stalls will be approximately 1 meter wide and 60 cm deep
with a backdrop for presenting posters, as illustrated in this picture
<http://www.intgovforum.org/images/Proforma_QUIOSQUE-IGF-ONU.jpg>.
(Please note that the final version may differ from the picture
shown.)[updated 4 October 2007]
