Hi all,
the Document Freedom Day web site is now usable and with seeding
content. Ivan was so kind to provide an overview of the work done on
the site so far, which I'm attaching to the bottom of this mail.
We need more outreach now.
I have started informing people about DFD, we've started letting
people in the FSFE circles and teams know, and the first people have
already declared that they will organise teams. We're also moving
beyond FSFE now to get a wider circle involved - including the SFD,
which has also received a notice about plans, but which has not
responded so far.
Could everyone else please also give an overview of where the word has
been spread so we have an idea of where we need more coverage?
Next steps.
Plans for the DFD itself are becoming more concrete, as well. An idea
that was brought up was one of creating "DFD Starter Packs" that will
enable local communities to get better output and media coverage while
serving as a motivator, since they can keep the materials - and reuse
them the next year.
Components of the DFD Starter Pack we considered are:
* 1x Document Freedom Day Flag
FSFE has good experience with its Fellowship flags, which are
real flags from a professional store and can be hoisted as well
as carried around and so on and so forth. They also help to
make very nice pictures, see [1,2].
So we were considering to do Document Freedom flags, which
would be blue with the ODF Dove in white.

* 3x Document Freedom Day T-Shirt (additional shirts for payment)
Blue shirts with ODF Logo + "Liberate your Documents" on the
back and the URL of the Document Freedom Day, maybe with an
additional "DFD '08" so we can do different shirts every year
and they will ideally become collector's items.
* 20x Document Freedom Day stickers.
We need a good slogan for this, maybe along the lines of:
"My documents are free. Are yours?"
* 100x Document Freedom Information Leaflets
A basic leaflet in English on the values of Document Freedom.
We could also consider doing a basic layout that can be
professionally printed without text - so people can then use
any normal laser printer to print the information leaflets in
their local language themselves.
The FSFE office in Düsseldorf can take care of most of the logistics
of this, but we do not have the financial means - so if we decide that
we want to do this, we need commitment from sponsors.
Based on our experience with other items, FSFE's office has done a
rough estimation to get an idea what such a pack would cost, and all
things considered, doing 100 packs would come at ~85 EUR per pack, so
we are looking at 8500 EUR total.
Unfortunately there is not a lot of time to decide, the flags have
delivery times of about three weeks, so if we order Monday next week,
we could start sending out the packs from 3 March, which is still just
in time, but we cannot wait very much.
Commitments, comments, suggestions and ideas are welcome.
Best regards,
Georg, Ivan and Marko

Hi,
What do you think about making a list of media contacts we want to keep
updated about DFD happenings? When we make it, we might send an group
invitation for joining our media mailing list for example...
Regards,
Ivan
Hello,
It is time for us to start thinking about press releases for the 20th.
IMO, we might have two ones, for the IT and non-IT medias. Wat do you
think about that?

Hi all,
the current scheduled media announcement for the Document Freedom Day is
the February 20th, so the Wednesday before FOSDEM in Brussels. [1] We
should definitely prepare to promote the Document Freedom Day during
FOSDEM as best we can and try to get as many Free Software people
involved as possible.
One obvious possibility would be to have some distribution material
ready for FOSDEM, another would be to prepare some poster for the DFD
that you can hang up at the FSFE booth.
Volker: Is there any chance you can coordinate or delegate this so we
have something in time for FOSDEM?
Regards,
Georg

Hi all,
this is a collaborative effort, and you can edit pages or create new
ones just by signing up and doing it. We may have to close the Wiki at
some point in the future (once we get significant vandalism), at which
point in time it'll get a little more burdensome.
So better sign up now: :-)

What everyone should know about DRM (http://DRM.info)
Hi all,
Let's start using this list ;) For a start, please take a look at:
http://www.documentfreedom.org/Mediahttp://www.documentfreedom.org/Artwork
Media page should be starting place for a journalist, at least I had
that thought about it. This is just a first draft, so let's share
impressions in goal to make it better ;)
Artwork also should help in PR activities. For now, we have 4:3
wallpapers and some standards sized banners. Wide screen format of
wallpapers and more sizes of banners will come soon. If you have some
ideas about the motives for wallpapers or some other artwork, let's
start talk about that :)
Buttons are in plan too.
Thanks
Ivan
