Stress test FSFE’s new donation options!

FSFE’s work [1] depends on your donations. Without we would not be able to work on software freedom, follow the policy process in European countries, the European Union [2], and the United Nations [3], nor would we be able to run campaigns like pdfreaders.org [4] or Document Freedom Day [5]. RFC for FSFE Edu-Team mission statement

Hello all, Although the Edu-Team has been active again, there was no consistent answer to the question what exactly we are aiming for and how we plan to get there. So, we started working on our mission statement and came up with a first draft. You are warmly invited to provide us with any kind of input for improvements! -------------------- FSFE Edu-Team Mission Statement: With the increasing usage of Information technology, software knowledgeability [1] has become a key skill in modern society. At almost all levels [2], pupils and students are taught how to use computers and deal with software. We believe [3] Free Software is the best choice as it encourages schooling of understanding over product schooling, upholds the scientific principles and doesn't neglect the social components of education like sharing, helping and learning from each other [4]. The aim of the education activity of FSFE is furthering Free Software in all education related activities and institutions. In accordance with FSFE's self conception [0], we want to bring Free Software in education on the political agenda across all European country borders and inform administrations, teachers, students/pupils and their parents about the benefits Free Software provides. We also want to foster communication and cooperation among these groups as well as with the developers and advocates of Free Software and their organisations to help them succeed. We aim for a legal framework that will not discriminate the use of Free Software and offer our expertise and advise to all parties involved. Hi all ! On Monday it's Valentine's day. What link to Free Software, will you ask ? On this day, FSFE invites you to consider another question : Why not make this February 14th a very special day and show that we appreciate the work of Free Software developpers and support Free Software in general ? *How to participate* You have plenty of choice on how you proclaim your enthusiasm towards Free Software : - send a message to a FS developper, saying that instead of signalling a bug, for once you just want to thank for their work, and indicate that this mail is part of the I love FS campaign, - microblog on identi.ca and add the tag #ilovefs [1] - invite a friend on a drink and tell him about Free Software - Donate to a Free Software project [2] [3] - include a Valentine's day design to your website [4] - take a picture demonstrating your love to FS and send it to FSFE [5] - etc... *Spread the word* The Free Software world is eager for one day of love, so whatever you do for this day, blog, microblog (#ilovefs) [1] about it, tell FSFE about it [5], bring more and more people around you to participate and help us make a huge declaration of love to Free Software ! Can WebM already be called an open standard?

Hi everybody, The FSF applauds Google for its decision to remove H.264 from its browsers and its push for WebM; and the FSF supports WebM: http://www.fsf.org/news/supporting-webm http://www.fsf.org/news/free-software-foundation-statement-on-webm-and- vp8 But when it comes to our definition of open standards --- http://fsfe.org/projects/os/def.en.html: what do you think, can WebM already be called an open standard? AFAIK, recently FFmpeg released a from-scratch WebM reimplementation, which lets criterion 5 (available in multiple complete implementations by competing vendors, or as a complete implementation equally available to all parties.) at least begin to hold. But what would you say: Can criterion 4 (managed and further developed independently of any single vendor in aw process open to the equal participation of competitors and third parties) already be identified to be true? GN-531: Thank you for GNU/Linux support

Hi, I recently purchased several GN-531 wireless -n adaptors from play.com for £7.29 each. I have found them to work with zero configuration with my GNU/Linux computers. I wanted to let you know that the reason I chose this product was the availability of Free Software drivers for GNU/Linux. I will be recommending this device to my friends and colleagues for this reason. Additionally I was very glad to see that the box makes clear that GNU/Linux is supported, and which kernel version is required. This is how I initially became aware of the availability of the drivers. Thank you for releasing Free Software drivers and for stating GNU/Linux support on the product packaging.
