Indeed, at least buying a laptop without an OS or with linux
pre-installed.
After you showed me your laptop at ECM, I am looking for a
replacement of mine.
Probably I will buy one from System76
(https://www.system76.com/home/), don't know which model yet.
Cheers,
Mauricio
Until now all the articles were in German, so here a short summary about
compulsory routers in Germany, and our work on this:

As said before I would be very much interested if you have similar
problems in your countries.
Best Regards,

This latest leak looks similar to the US agenda in Europe:
http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/australians-may-pay-t…
Of particular interest:
- all talks held in private, even members of parliament have been kept
in the dark
- heavier patent obligations - although the impact on pharma is
discussed, it is not hard to imagine these things extrapolated to
software patents, with a negative impact on free software development in
Australia (Samba originated in Australia, but just imagine if Microsoft
could accuse them of violating some patent...)
The only upside to this is that if US software vendors continue to
maintain higher prices in Australia (an issue that receives regular
complaints in the Australian press, many products are 20% or more
expensive) then it continues to give people an extra reason to encourage
the use of free software.
Dear All,
From 12 to 15th of December there will be an art/technology-festival by the
'Constant Association for Art and Media' in Brussels:
http://constantvzw.org/site/Are-You-Being-Served.html
They are doing a phone-flash-party (like FreeYourAndroid workshops) in
that people that did phone-flashing gather with people that have not yet
experience in phone-flashing but like to free their phones.
They asked me to come and host the event, but, unfortunately, I am not able to
make it in that time. Now they found someone else who feels able to host the
event, but, still, they are looking for technical people that help him to
flash phones.
They asked me to spread the request and as I support phone flashing and
leaving Google Services a lot, I thought about spreading the message here.
Anyone who feels able to help and might make it to Brussels (or lives there),
feel free to contact me for more details and contacts.
Best,
Erik

Today, I gave talk on Open Data for the Hack4Dk cultural heritage data,
where I presented a free software developer's perspective on the concept
of Open Data.
I use the "open source" word, mainly for ease of communication - "Free
Software" is not yet readily understood by everybody here, alas (our
Fellowship Group wants to work on that).
The talk is here, feedback is welcome if you have any:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPfEGz2fgdI

Sunday 3rd of November 13hrs to 16hrs.
Let me know how to contact you and we can get a sneak preview at 12hrs.
And it would be nice to meet you in person.
Please forward to local fsf members as am not a member yet.
This dojo has no specific trend so it would be great to have a lot of freesoftware going along.
Hopefully I will be there with a trisquel mini usb to share the love.

Hi,
You may already know about this, but there's a very nice firefox
extension called "It's all text" that will allow you to edit wiki,
comments, and blog posts with your favourite native text editor
rather than within the textarea element of your web browser.
If, like me, editing the wiki.fsfe.org often feels like a PITA;
this will make things a little easier for you ☻
Best,
Hugo

Hi all,
I have a programmed spreadsheet to publish and and am unsure how to
procede regarding the format. I use the ODS format and only LibreOffice
or OpenOffice are able to both run it and display all information. With
Gnumeric the main part works OK, but some embedded vector drawings don't
display.
It is in this folder: http://data.umwelteinsatz.ch/T/en/Stonechat/
Microsoft Office (2010) displays the spreadsheet (also without drawings)
but removes all the formulas, showing just the values, making the
spreadsheet useless as a program. It makes no difference whether the
ODF-Plugin from Sun
(http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/Other-Office-Tools/Sun-ODF-Plugin…)
is installed or not.
With the plugin installed, it is possible to to save in ODS with MS
Office. So I tried making an XLS Version with Libre Office, opening it
with MS Office, and saving in ODS. Now the formulas work, but the cell
sizes are distorted so much that it is again useless.
I cannot understand why the (75 MB!!) plugin from Sun works so badly.
Surely Sun had no motivation for this. Presumably Microsoft has a
motivation for making ODS not work properly.
What would you do, give in to Microsoft and publish in XLS or XLSX?
I also posed this question on our local FSFE mailing list in
Switzerland. Here people suggested to either be pragmatic, i.e. publish
in an Excel-Format, or to rewrite the program in HTML with Javascript so
that it will run in a browser.
I am not very happy with these answers. The first means that Microsoft
won and we can forget ODF or at least ODS. The second would be good for
"consuming" users, but make it next to impossible for them to make
improvements to the program, something which is rather easy in a
spreadsheet. In fact, it would be too difficult for me as well, so I
would have to pay somebody to do this.
Any other suggestions?
Best, Theo Schmidt
