Several people with @gnu.org mail addresses have had problems with the fsfeurope.org list, the problem seems to be with the fsfeurope.org mailing list server. I got this just now:
| Subject: You have been unsubscribed from the Discussion mailing list | From: discussion-bounces@fsfeurope.org | To: ams@gnu.org | Date: Tue, 09 Mar 2010 09:00:03 +0100
Before that I got messages like these:

You will not get any more messages from this list until | you re-enable your membership. You will receive 2 more reminders like | this before your membership in the list is deleted.
But trying to resubscribe I get a message stating that I am already subscribe. Ward tried contacting the list owner, but there was no reply, can someone please look into this problem and resolve it?

You reported this earlier, and I replied. Did you receive the email http://mail.fsfeurope.org/pipermail/discussion/2010-February/008619.html ?

My understanding was that the email didn't ask you to resubscribe, but to confirm your existing subscription. When you log into your mailman settings for the list, there is a checkbox somewhere that says "delivery disabled", and you have to uncheck it.
After the last mail you should be able to resubscribe, since AFAIU you are not not subscribed any more.
Concering the reasons of the bounces, I can't give you further details, but I hope our sysadmin will be able to look at this shortly.
Thanks, Reinhard

Yes, this is the standard mailman procedure for excessive bounces: the address is first disabled from delivery (but not unsubscribed), and 3 weekly reminders are sent; if bouncing persists you are automatically unsubscribed.
(BTW I've manually re-subscribed on 9 March the 6 @gnu.org addresses that were automatically unsubscribed in the morning).

I guess the gnu.org mailserver had some trouble in late February early March (@gnu.org users: can you confirm?), because the bounce configuration parameters for this list are set to default values; anyway I'll have a closer look at them, please report any other problems you might find to system-hackers@fsfeurope.org Thanks!

please note that I set them to the default values *after* this happened, before they were set to rather extreme values, please see the archive of this thread for details (don't remember them exactly now).
Thanks, Reinhard

Ah, this explains it all, thanks for reporting it. So the discussion@ list was mistakenly configured with the same bounce settings that we use for our press-release* lists (which, due to different traffic conditions, need the "extreme" values you noticed above).
It was very likely my fault, since I remember changing these parameters for some lists a long time ago; I'm going to check the other lists for possible misconfigurations.

There weren't any problems with the mail on @gnu.org around late February, early March. The @gnu.org mail servers handle quite alot of mail, and only discussion@fsfeurope.org was misbehaving for me.

I do not remeber, I might have but I cannot find it in my inbox.

I got two or three reminders, and one claiming I had been unsubscribed form the list. At which point I tried subscribing, and mailman claimed I was already subscribed.
