Also aus Sicht freie-Software kann ich da wenig dazu sagen, AFAIK haben sie alle eine proprietäre Firmware. Bei den älteren Modellen hängt sich das Modem auch ab und zu mal auf, bei den neueren Huaweis ist mir das eigentlich noch nicht untergekommen. Vom Protokoll lassen sie sich mit den AT* commands genau so wie analoge Modems ansteuern, funktionieren also im Wesentlichen ohne spezielle Treiber.
Die meisten Modems müssen allerdings vorher erst in den passenden Modus geschaltet werden, was mit dem Programm usb_modeswitch passiert. Eine Liste mit den unterstützten Modellen gibt's hier: http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/device_reference.txt

Kein Thema ist vielleicht übertrieben, aber ein Großteil der Modems geht. Der ganze Verbindungsaufbau geht bei aktuellen Distros auch automatisch (bzw. ist im Gnome Networkmanager drinnen), man muss im wesentlichen nur ein paar Zugangsdaten und den APN eingeben.
