Es sind drei Gruppen, die da in Richtung Privacy interessant sind: 1) Die Sammler der Location/Wifi/Zellendaten (per MozStumbler), 2) die Besitzer/Betreiber der WiFi-Nodes, 3) die Benutzer der Datenbank bzw. des Services.
Und es ist gar nicht so leicht, alle "unter einen Hut" zu bekommen.
Die Stumbler-Gruppe ist noch relativ einfach, weil wir im Gegensatz zu den kommerziellen Betreibern keine automatische Sammlung im Hintergrund durchführen, sondern das Datensammeln "opt-in" ist und sich die Leute daher bewusst sind, dass sie ihre Daten "hergeben".
Die Benutzer-Gruppe hätte einen großen Vorteil, wenn die Datenbank komplett offen wäre, denn dann könnte man sie lokal runterladen und den eigenen Standpunkt bestimmen, ohne irgendwas "rauszuschicken".
Die WiFi-Betreiber sind problematisch, weil sie nie zur Datensammlung zustimmen. Da die Signale "öffentlich einsehbar" sind und opt-out-Möglichkeiten bestehen, ist das Sammeln zwar (AFAIK) rechtlich OK, aber eine komplett offene Datenbank birgt das Problem, dass jeder, der seinen Wireless-Router nicht komplett umkonfiguriert, leicht wiedergefunden wird, auch wenn er sich "verstecken" will (z.B. mittels eines Umzugs).
Und letzteres Argument (und ähnliche) ist so weit ich weiß jenes, an dem unsere Träume einer offenen Datenbank bisher scheitern. Wenn eine Möglichkeit gefunden werden kann, das zu umgehen, dann ist dieser Traum aber nach wie vor auf dem Tisch, so weit ich weiß.
Aber Hanno, der da als Entwickler direkt involviert ist, kann dir dazu wohl mehr sagen als ich selbst.
