Hello! Just a quick report from FInland: today and tomorrow we have this Open Finland event: http://avoinsuomi2014.fi/ It is organized by the Finnish Government (cabinet office). The main focus is open data, but COSS (the local FSFE in Finland) is one of the organizers and open source / free software is also present and Microsoft and Oracle cannot be seen anywhere. FTF: Thomas is my friend and he spends a lot of his day work time writing Free Software. Please advice him with this issue. Sonera doesn't seem to understand the concept of GPL. When I asked them for the GPL et al. sources of my router a year ago, they refused and pointed to Zyxel. Sure, you _can_ resort to just asking the OEM, but legally the company that sold you the device is on the hook for GPL compliance. I'm currently trying to get a proper contact, as I'm discussing some security issues with NCSC/CERT-FI and Sonera, but that doesn't seem to be going anywhere either GPL wise. For the previous device I just asked Zyxel directly and they were reasonably fast and diligent, once I found the right contact. I was thinking that someone should explain to Sonera legal what all this is, maybe FSFE or such. Another thing is that there is no indication whatsoever in the package that the device contains GPL and other licensed software. No written note, nothing. Only after you take the CD from the package and go to the last pages of the system integrator manual, you'll find something resembling a GPL notice. I'm unsure, this may legally be still OK, but sure is considered bad style. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on those issues. To: SFD announcements <sfd-announce(a)sf-day.org> Dear all, With a bit of delay, the Digital Freedom Foundation is very happy to announce that registration of the eleventh edition of Software Freedom Day opened early August. This year we are unfortunately unable to ship any goodies for the pre-registered teams: as we have mentioned before, our involvment with the Cambodian system of education required us to relocate. Being happy owners of a few special animals (CITES-II listed species) we would not have moved without them. This took us about 3-4 months to make it happen and we arrived in Phnom Penh end of May. We then had to look for a place to live, get our furnitures out of the customs and a member of our team got hospitalized for ten days in July. With all this, identifying new suppliers for the schwag just could not happen. Nevertheless, SFD teams have been very patient and nice with us and hopefully SFD 2014 will not be too much impacted by this. So as usual registration happens after you have created your event page on the wiki. We have an exaustive guide here for newcomers and for the others who need help, the SFD-Discuss mailing is probably the best place to get prompt support.
