Olen yrittänyt tässä tehdä laskelmaa Linux-käyttäjämääristä Suomessa, osittain koska yksi toimittaja haluaa kirjoittaa siitä ja osittain omasta kiinnostuksestani, sillä kukaanhan ei tällä hetkellä tiedä paljonko Linux-käyttäjiä Suomessa on. Olisi myös mukava, jos käyttäjämäärä olisi suuri, koska sillä voisi vaikuttaa tukkureiden kiinnostukseen maahantuoda Linux-yhteensopivia laitteita tai jopa esiasennettuja Linux-koneita.
Kesällä 2010 Tuure Vartiainen laski ubuntu.trumpetti.atm.tut.fi -palvelimen tilastoista, että heinäkuun 2010 aikana sieltä päivityksiä hakeneiden koneiden joukossa oli 126 000 uniikkia suomalaista IP-osoitetta.
IP-osoitteista on hankala arvioida käyttäjien määrää, kun yhdessä ääripäässä joku mokkulaa käyttävä läppäri voi kuukaudessa käyttää 30 eri IP-osoitetta ja toisessa ääripäässä NAT:n takana voi kuukauden ajan olla samalla IP:llä useita lähiverkkotyöasemia tai palvelinfarmi. Kun katselen oman /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient- lease-aikoja, niin tyypillisimmät dhcp-lease ajat on 1 ja 3 vuorokautta kiinteissä verkoissa ja WLAN:eissa 1 tunti. DHCP kuitenkin jatkuvasti uusitaan joten vaikea sanoa koska vanha IP vapautetaan kokonaan ja käyttäjä saa uuden.
Selvittääkseni mikä on uniikkien IP:en ja todellisten käyttäjien suhde louhin vähän yhtä vanhaa www-käyttäjätilastoa, josta suodatin kaikki user-agent=Linux-rivit ja näin, että heinäkuussa 2010 oli käynyt 594 evästeillä tunnistettua uniikkia käyttäjää 522 uniikista IP-osoitteesta. Tämän mukaan uniikki käyttäjä vs. uniikki IP suhde olisi 1,14 ja Tuuren laskemasta luvusta tulisi n. 144 000 asennusta, jotka hakevat päivityksiä.
Kun selailin IP-osoitteiden pysyvyyttä, löysin käyttäjiä joilla oli ollut sama IP 10-15 päivää, mutta pääosin käyttäjillä näytti olevan uusi IP parin päivän välein. Periaatteessa voisin lokittaa oman koneeni IP:tä ja katsoa miten usein se vaihtuu eri tilanteissa, mutta en tiedä kuinka yleistettävää tietoa se olisi. Lisäksi pitäisi ehkä tarkistaa, että hakevatko koneet nimenomaan Releases-tiedoston vai oliko kyseessä yleistä liikennettä ubuntu.trumpetti.atm.tut.fi-palvelimelle ja siitä jotenkin havaita tarkistussyklit ja niiden tekijät.
Palvelimellahan on vain Ubuntun, Debianin ja Gentoon peilit, joten kaikkien Linux-käyttäjien määrän laskemiseksi pitäisi vielä arvioida muiden jakelujen käyttäjämäärät. Wikimedian tilastoista http://stats.wikimedia.org/archive/squid_reports/2010-07/SquidReportOperatin... näkee, että Ubuntun, Debianin ja Genoon suhde muihin jakeluihin (Fedora, SUSE jne) on (28,873+2,060+744)/(2,571+2,556+499+429+42) = 5,2. Eli kun 144 000 * (1+1/5,2) = n. 172 000.
Samaisen sivuston mukaan GNU/Linux-käyttäjiä kaikista vierailijoista on 1,3%. 172 000 työpöytäasennusta ei varmastikaan pidä paikkaansa, koska silloin Suomessa pitäisi olla 17 miljoonaa tietokonetta nettiselailukäytössä. Tilastokeskuksen mukaan vuonna 2010 suomalaista kotitalouksista 82 %:ssa oli tietokone (http://stat.fi/til/sutivi/2010/sutivi_2010_2010-10-26_tau_001_fi.html) ja 82 % väestöstä käytti nettiä päivittäin tai viikottain (http://stat.fi/til/sutivi/2010/sutivi_2010_2010-10-26_tau_004_fi.html). Tästä voisi ehkä arvioida että suomessa on nelisen miljoonaa tietokonetta nettiselailuun? Neljästä miljoonasta 1,3% on 52 000 Linux-konetta. Jos loput 120 000 on palvelimia ja https://secure1.securityspace.com/s_survey/data/201007/fi/index.html mukaan Suomessa palvelinten Linux-osuus on jotain 90%, niin sitten Suomessa pitäisi olla 133 000 palvelinkonetta. Kuulostaa järkevältä.
Eli kesällä 2010 Suomessa GNU/Linux-asennuksia: - 52 000 työasemaa - 120 000 palvelinta
Jos otetaan kaikki Linuxit, ei vain GNUt, niin päälle tulee Androidit joiden markkinaosuus viime kuussa oli 1,8% selainliikenteestä, niin saadaan vielä 72 000 Linux-käyttäjää lisää.
