Hi,
The creator of MySQL, Michael 'Monty' Widenius is asking for help to save MySQL in the Oracle/Sun deal:

I noticed that FSFE already has made a statement, accompanied with a detailed analysis, suggesting MySQL should be made independent (http://www.fsfe.org/news/2009/news-20091023-02.fi.html). It seems that now Oracle is using dirty tricks to get the deal approved, the situation is more urgent and further action might help.
One particular detail which I think FSFE could make noise about and which is fully in line with FSFE priorities (protecting freedom) is the MySQL Reference Manual (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/) which currently is not available under any free license and therefore also forking is not possible. It's unfortunate that MySQL Ab didn't already release the manual under some free license earlier, but now it is clearly becoming an obstacle for both non-commercial and commercial further development.
Regards,
Arto
