Ich finde es interessant, dass dort ein Amerikaner genau die Dinge
kritisiert, die wir an der FSF ebenfalls kritisieren und die meines
Erachtens nach bei uns in der FSFE deutlich besser laufen.
Zu dem Open Letter gab es bei "Hacker News" einen interessanten
Diskussions-Thread, den ich im Anlass nahm, einmal auf die FSFE
hinzuweisen, die vielen amerikanischen Freie-Software-Enthusiasten
anscheinend noch kein Begriff ist:

Ich staunte nicht schlecht, als ich so einige interessierte Nachfragen
erhielt, unter anderem auch ob ein Amerikaner, der mit der FSF
unzufrieden ist, stattdessen der FSFE beitreten könne.
Ich habe mich bemüht, "im Namen der FSFE" möglichst gute Antworten
zu geben. Doch ich nin nur ein einfacher Fellow, der längst nicht
alle Strukturen und Kampagnen der FSFE im Überblick hat. Es wäre
daher super, wenn sich noch eine "offiziellere" Person an dieser
Diskussion beteiligen könnte, und mich ggf. an einigen Stellen
korrigiert. Die Aufmerksamkeit, die man dort erhält, sollte man
nicht unterschätzen.
Wie auch immer, ich wollte einfach mal darauf hinweisen, weil ich
den Verlauf der dortigen Diskussion recht kurios finde.

Nach den Befragungen in anderen Bundesländern, veröffentlichte heute
die Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) die Ergebnisse ihrer
Parteienumfrage zu Freier Software für die Bürgerschaftswahl in
Bremen.
"Am meisten hat uns die Ahnungslosigkeit der FDP zu Offenen Standards
erschreckt. Weiterhin verstehen wir nicht, dass die Bremer SPD und FDP
Verlinkungen der Verwaltung auf proprietäre Software akzeptabel finden.
Wir sehen das als Anlass, die Parteien in Zukunft besser zu informieren.
Beim Thema Software-Patente ist dies besser gelungen: Die Parteien
äußern sich klar gegen Software-Patente", so Matthias Kirschner,
Deutschlandkoordinator der FSFE."
Die FDP betont zwar den Kostenaspekt Freier Software, verkennt jedoch
deren politische Bedeutung. Die Bremer Grünen enttäuschen mit
schwammigen Aussagen, die im Kontrast zu ausgearbeiteten Antworten der
anderen Landesverbände stehen. Genauso die Position der Piratenpartei;
sie fällt zwar positiv für Freie Software aus, ist aber im Vergleich
zu anderen Landesverbänden weniger konkret. Die Linke hat starke
Positionen zu Freier Software, konkrete Maßnahmen werden jedoch nicht
genannt und scheinen noch entwickelt zu werden.
Die Bremer SPD scheint sich nur oberflächlich mit Freier Software
auseinandergesetzt zu haben, jedoch bemühte sich der Bremer
Landesverband, die Wahl-Fragen direkt zu beantworten, während es bei
den anderen Landtagswahlen nur eine allgemeine Antwort gab.
"Bedauerlicherweise zeigt die CDU mit der Wahl in Bremen keine
Verbesserung", so Kirschner. "Nachdem die anderen Landesverbände
bereits nur indirekt und unkonkret auf unsere Wahlprüfsteine
eingegangen waren, blieben unsere Fragen in Bremen, wie schon in
Rheinland-Pfalz, unbeantwortet. Damit ignoriert die Bremer CDU die
gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Potentiale Freier Software."

*Offene Standards* werden thematisch von der SPD noch mit
Freier Software vermischt und die FDP ist sich unsicher, ob Offene
Standards wichtig für die Verwaltung sind und will die Definition
Offener Standards den "Fachleuten" überlassen.
*Werbung für unfreie Software durch die Verwaltung* Die
Bremer FDP bezweifelt, ob es sich bei der Verlinkung von unfreier
Software auf den Webseiten der öffentlichen Verwaltung um Werbung
handelt. Die SPD ist der Ansicht, dass eine solche Verlinkung auf
unfreie Software gerechtfertigt ist, wenn das Programm eine weite
Verbreitung hat. Damit sind die Positionen schwächer als z.B. bei den
Antworten der Parteien in Rheinland-Pfalz

*Software-Patente* Positiv sticht die Position der
Parteien zu dem Problem der Software-Patente hervor. Hier herrscht
Konsens: FDP, Grüne, Linke und Piratenpartei sprechen sich klar dagegen
aus. Nur die SPD ist bei dem Thema etwas zaghaft und spricht nur von
einer Reform des Urheberrechts.

Die Parteien konnten Stellung nehmen zu Fragen über die generelle
Förderung von Freier Software, dem Problem der Herstellerabhängigkeit
bei unfreier Software, Offenen Standards, dem Einsatz von Freier
Software in der Bildung, Werbung für unfreie Software auf Webseiten der
öffentlichen Verwaltung sowie zu Softwarepatenten. Im Rahmen ihrer "Ask
your Candidates"-Kampagne[5] wird die FSFE die selben Fragen auch an die
Parteien der kommenden Landtagswahlen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern,
Niedersachsen und Berlin richten.

Berlin 11. Mai 2011. Im Fall der Abkehr des Auswärtigen Amtes von Freier
Software verwickelt sich die Bundesregierung in Widersprüche. Die
Reaktion der Regierung auf eine Kleine Anfrage der Grünen wirft mehr
Fragen auf, als sie beantwortet.
"Viele der Antworten zeigen, dass die Bundesregierung entweder wichtige
Aspekte Freier Software nicht verstanden hat, oder dass die Regierung
hier bewußt Freie Software im Allgemeinen und Freie Software-Unternehmen
attackiert.", sagt Matthias Kirschner, Deutschlandkoordinator der Free
Software Foundation Europe (FSFE).
So bestreitet die Regierung, dass die Entwicklungen im Auswärtigen Amt
eine "Abkehr von der bisherigen ausschließlich auf quelloffener Software
basierenden IT-Strategie" darstellen. Gleichzeitig bestätigt sie jedoch,
dass die Behörde auf Microsoft Windows 7 und Office 2010 migieren wird.
"Die Behauptungen, dass Freie Software schlechter benutzbar sei, höhere
Hardware-Kosten verursache und es an Gewährleistung mangele, gehören
wohl eher ins Reich der Fantasie als in eine Antwort der
Bundesregierung", so Elmar Geese, Vorsitzender des Linux-Verbands.
Daneben wirft die Antwort der Regierung neue Fragen auf. So erwähnt die
Regierung, dass 4,3 Millionen Euro für eine "quelloffene
Bundesdistribution" ausgegeben aber offenbar nie fertig gestellt wurde.
"Wir fragen uns natürlich, was mit diesem Projekt passiert ist, und
wofür die Regierung das Geld eigentlich ausgegeben hat", sagt Matthias
Kirschner.
Die FSFE und der Linux-Verband werden zusammen mit Interessierten an
einer Analyse der Antwort arbeiten.

ich bin gerade auf eine Webseite gestoßen, die soweit ich weiß im
Rahmen der FSFE noch keine Beachtung fand, was ich hiermit ändern
möchte. :-)
Konkret geht es um die Startseite des freien Chromium-Browsers [1], wie
sie zumindest unter Debian im Paket "chromium-browser" voreingestellt
ist. Diese Startseite verweist gleich zu Anfang auf die folgende
ziemlich gruselige Einführung in das Web:
"20 Things I Learned about Browsers and the Web"

Auf den ersten Blick handelt sich um ein sehr liebevoll gestaltetes
Werk - von den Illustrationen her genauso wie von typographischer
Seite aus. Der Schreibstil ist allgemeinverständlich und an Web-
Neulinge gerichtet, die Illustrationen sind sogar dezent animiert.
Man könnte fast geneigt sein, dieses seinen Eltern oder Großeltern
zum Lesen zu geben. [2]
Inhaltlich ist ebenfalls viel Richtiges dabei. Es wird grob erklärt,
wie das Internet funktioniert und welche Rolle Browser spielen. Einiges
wird konkret am Chrome erklärt, doch es werden im gleichen Atemzug auch
stets die anderen Browser erwähnt. Beim Thema Sicherheit fällt besonders
positiv auf, dass hier komplett auf das Marketing-Gelaber der Antiviren-
Industrie verzichtet wird. [3] Auch das Thema Privatsphäre wird anhand
von Themen wie Cookies ganz gut beleuchtet, mit Vor- und Nachteilen. Ja,
man könnte hier fast eine Leseempfehlung aussprechen.
Doch schon ab Seite 7 wird klar: Wo Google draufsteht [4], ist auch
Google drin. Das Kapitel "Cloud Computing" ist alles andere aus
ausgewogen, sondern eine Lobesrede auf alle Dienste, die die eigene
Festplatte überflüssig machen wollen. Das erscheint angesichts neuster
Entwicklungen besonders absurd. [5] Das nachfolgende Kapitel "Web Apps"
ist keinen Deut besser. In diesem beiden Kapiteln findet man, im
Gegensatz zum Rest, keine Spur einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung.
Nach diesen Kapiteln kommt dann wieder lesenswerter Inhalt.
Das ist wirklich schade, und irgendwie auch gruselig: Mitten in so
vielem Guten plötzlich so ein firmenpolitisch motivierter Dreck.
Der erste gute Eindruck täuscht hier leider gewaltig.
Ich möchte somit dazu aufrufen, diesen Text nicht weiter zu empfehlen,
vorallem nicht an Einsteiger. Und falls doch, dann mit ausdrücklichem
Hinweis auf die Probleme dieser vermeintlich hervorragenden Einführung.
