Dann müsste man also nur einen genauen Überblick/ Einblick in die Distributionen haben, was sie leisten, wie sie ticken?

du machst auf mich den Eindruck, als wärst du jemand der bildlich gesprochen sagt: "Hey Leute, ich möchte euch schwimmen beibringen", aber sich selbst noch nie ins Wasser gewagt hat.
Schau dir doch einfach mal eine gute GNU/Linux Distribution an. Ich empfehle gNewSense. Das ist eine Live-CD. Das heißt, man kann das System von CD booten und damit erstmal rumexperimentieren, ohne dass man es sich gleich fest installieren muss. Wenn man es dann fest installiert, kann man über einen Menüpunkt auch ganz einfach Software nachinstallieren. - Da muss man nicht erst lange im Internet herumrecherchieren, wie bei manch anderen Systemen. ;-)
Nun gut, die haben nicht gerade die schönste Website. Aber ich habe die ausgewählt, weil die mehr als jede andere Distribution auf Freie Software Wert legen und darauf achten, keine proprietäre Software anzubieten.
