auf muenchen.de ist mir aufgefallen, dass das Kartenmaterial von Google stammt. Mit Open Street Map existiert definitiv ebenbürtiges, wenn nicht besseres Material für München (und wohl auch andere deutsche Großstädte). Neben der (hoffentlich kostenlosen) Werbung für Google kommen dazu sicher noch Aspekte des Datenschutzes (Trackt Google bei Maps?).
Was denkt ihr dazu? Haltet ihr es für angebracht, die Verantwortlichen anzuschreiben? Welche OSM-Alternativen kann ein Web-Verantwortlicher ebenso einfach einbinden wie Google Maps?

Finde ich gerade für München gut, OSM zu verwenden. Mit den Resourcen der Stadt könnte sie sogar eine eigene Karte anbieten auf Basis von OSM. Auf http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/List_of_OSM_based_Services hat es eine Liste von Projekten, wobei viele nicht existieren oder funktionieren, z.B. diejenige von Paris.
Als Beispiel hier Open Sea Map, für München nicht speziell interessant, aber man kann z.B. ein Koordinatengitter einblenden: http://map.openseamap.org/map/
Was ich micht allerdings frage, ist ob OSM nicht überlastet wird, wenn die halbe Welt gratis und werbefrei darauf zugreift. Weiss da jemand etwas?

Es ist nicht so gedacht, dass man "einfach so" die OSM-Tileserver für ein solches Projekt nimmt. Man kann entweder einen eigenen Tileserver installieren oder man sucht sich eine Firma, die das im Auftrag erledigt. Ich weiß nicht ob es da schon ein fix und fertiges Angebot einer Firma gibt, aber eigentlich müsste sich da schon ein Dienstleister finden der das übernehmen kann.
Bei Google muss man mittlerweile auch bezahlen wenn man eine Seite mit relevantem Traffic mit Google-Maps ausrüstet.

da hast du Recht. Ich habe das Thema heute Abend auch mit einem Bekannten vom Münchner OSM-Stammtisch besprochen und er meinte, dass man das Hosting definitiv über einen kommerziellen Anbieter machen soll.
Er hat mir außerdem erzählt, dass im Rahmen von MogDy [1] vorgeschlagen wurde, die Radl-Karte auf OSM umzustellen, allerdings fehlen zu den Mogdy-Initiativen wohl noch die Stadtratsbeschlüsse.
Ich denke, dass wir beim Thema Geodaten definitiv was machen können, vor allem auch zusammen mit OSM. Allerdings müssen wir dafür klare und realistische Alternativen benennen. Nur wie mache ich das ohne Anbieter zu stark zu benennen aber gleichzeitig mit genug Informationen, damit die oder der Verantwortliche nicht ratlos zurück bleibt?
Freue mich über eure Ideen.

Einfach mehrere Anbieter benennen. Oder auf eine Übersichtsseite verlinken. Falls es sowas wie pdfreaders.org noch nicht für OSM-Anbieter gibt, könnte man vielleicht auch sowas aufbauen.
Außerdem finde ich es wichtig zu erwähnen, dass im Prinzip auch jeder die OSM-Karten selbst auf den eigenen Servern hosten kann. Das ist zwar nur dann praktikabel, wenn man sowieso eigene Server am Start hat. Aber: Allein dass diese _Möglichkeit_ besteht, und zwar für _jeden_, garantiert einen fairen Wettbewerb und damit auch gute Angebote.

ja, ich denke daraus läßt sich eine Initiative machen, ähnlich wie bei pdfreaders.org.

Es kommt sicherlich darauf an, welche Funktionen genutzt werden sollten. http://openstreetmap.de/ weist den Weg auf einige Fachbedürfnisse. Wichtig ist ja, dass der Dienst mit einer guten Wahrscheinlichkeit verfügbar ist und auch mit den deutschen Datenschutzbestimmungen konform sein sollte. Eigentlich müsste eine Behörde einen solchen Dienst einkaufen, also Ausschreiben. Das ist für die einzelne Behörde vielleicht zu teuer, aber einer der Behördendienstleister, wie das DLZ-IT könnte das beispielsweise für die Bundesbehörden anbieten. (Ja, Intevation würde vermutlich auf eine solche Ausschreibung bieten. Und bieten auch Hosting in kleineren Portionen an.)
Wir bei Intevation arbeiten gerade an einem kleinen Fachartikel, welcher auf die "API" Seite eingeht, der in einigen Wochen erscheinen soll. Es würde sich bestimmt auch lohnen die Frage mit dem http://www.fossgis.de/ und der deutschen Openstreetmap Initiative zu besprechen.
