Allerdings weiß ich nicht, wie man diese Entwicklung einordnen kann. Ist das ein großer Schritt? Oder einfach nur ein weiterer unter den vielen Messagern, die man irgendwie verwenden möchte, aber irgendwie dann lieber doch nicht?

Danke für den Hinweis, hab ich noch gar nicht mitbekommen. Schön finde ich, dass tatsächlich eine FS-Lizenz gewählt wurde und nicht nur einfach der Quellcode öffentlich gemacht wurde (Stichwort "Volksverschlüsselung").
Allerdings weiß ich nicht, wie man diese Entwicklung einordnen kann. Ist das ein großer Schritt? Oder einfach nur ein weiterer unter den vielen Messagern, die man irgendwie verwenden möchte, aber irgendwie dann lieber doch nicht?
Naja, natürlich ist es ein Schritt vorwärts und zeigt, wie wichtig Freie Software im Zusammenhang mit Sicherheitsprodukten wahrgenommen wird. Allerdings wird meine Euphorie dadurch gebremst, dass die Serverseite nicht Teil dieser Veröffentlichung wurde. Das bedeutet weiterhin, dass die Infrastruktur zentralisiert ist (und dadurch leicht blockierbar ist) und der Anbieter dort nach Gutdünken schalten und walten kann. Nicht zuletzt – aber da kenne ich Wire bisher nicht gut genug – weiß man ja auch nicht, was mit eventuell anfallenden Metadaten geschieht.
Kurzum: Freie-Software-Messenger gibt es bereits (Telegram), von daher keine riesige Sensation. Solche mit Freie-Software-Servern, die zudem hürdenlos Federation unterstützen, muss man allerdings mit der Lupe suchen. Signal möchte Federation unterbinden, Kontalk gibt es nur für Android, XMPP/Conversations ist IMO noch etwas zu frickelig, trotz OMEMO.
Also gilt es, weiterhin Druck auf Projekte wie Telegram und Wire auszuüben, Federation zu erlauben. Oder wir warten auf P2P-Projekte wie Briar oder ToX.

Auch empfehlen kann ich diesen Beitrag von Daniel Gultsch, dem Haupt- Conversations-Entwickler, über den aktuellen Stand von XMPP: https://gultsch.de/xmpp_2016.html
Er geht dabei vor allem auf technische Aspekte ein, also etwa welche XMPP- Erweiterungen für eine mit anderen Messengern vergleichbare (oder teilweise sogar bessere) Funktionalität sorgen oder warum Google Cloud Messaging im Grunde genommen überflüssig ist (XMPP ist bereits ein Push-Protokoll).
Ich persönlich benutze, seit in puncto (Libre)Signal die Würfel gefallen sind, nur noch Conversations und Telegram – ersteres sogar mit eigenem Server und letzteres nur für Leute die kein XMPP wollen oder können (z. B. weil Apple das Aufrechterhalten einer TCP-Verbindung „verbietet“). ;)

Das hier meinte ich mit „Würfel gefallen“: siehe [1] – es gab aber auch zuvor schon diverse Diskussionen, die allesamt abgewiegelt wurden. Es ist eine längere Diskussion und schon beim Überfliegen wurde mir klar, dass jegliche Hoffnung [2] darauf, dass Signal doch noch mal eines Tages föderiert sein würde, vergebens ist. Überhaupt habe ich den Eindruck, dass Moxie Marlinspike Föderation stark ablehnt – zum einen, weil er einen kritischen Blogpost dazu schrieb [3], zum anderen, weil er so einige namhafte Anbieter von zentralisierten Chat-Diensten mit seiner Verschlüsselungstechnik ausgestattet hat bzw. dabei geholfen, sie zu implementieren [4, 5, 6].

Ich kann da nur mutmaßen, aber ich glaube, vernommen zu haben, dass der Zugriff für Libresignal tatsählich eingeschränkt wurde – selbst bestätigen kann ich es aber nicht, da ich wie bereits gesagt seit etlichen Wochen kein Signal mehr benutze.

Mal eine andere Frage:
Gibt es Infos wie sie Geld mit diesem Produkt bekommen ? Es sieht so aus, als ob die Firma nur diesen Dienst hat. Auf der Seite finde ich leider keine Infos wie Sie mit dem Produkt überhaupt was verdienen.
