Auf http://heise.de/-1436957 macht sich Thorsten Leemhuis Gedanken, warum es so wenig Anbieter von PCs mit vorinstalliertem GNU/Linux gibt. Ich muss leider sagen, dass mir viele von ihm genannte Punkte einleuchten und würde gerne von jemandem hören, der solche PCs verreibt, wieso Herr Leemhuis doch falsch liegt. :)

Mal abgesehen davon, dass ich ihm in einigen Punkten nicht zustimme, aber: Wie wäre es, gar kein Betriebssystem auszuliefern? Man stößt keinem Distrifanboy vorm Kopf (gibt es tatsächlich solche Leute die eingeschnappt sind weil seine Lieblingsdistri nicht drauf ist? oO ) und trotzdem entfallen die Windows steuern.
Denn seien wir mal ehrlich: Zum derzeitigen Zeitpunkt ist es leider so, dass diejenigen die Linux benutzen entweder jemanden im Background haben, der ihnen hilft oder es selber machen...

Für Fanboys und girls sollte es kein Problem sein, die Lieblingsdistro aufzuspielen.
Die Auslieferung mit GNU/Linux bringt in jedem Fall Vorteile für Fans spezieller Distributionen.
Wenn die Auslieferungs-Distro gNewsense oder ähnliches ist, weiß man beispielsweise, dass die Lieblings-Distro auch ohne proprietäre Treiber auf der Hardware laufen wird.
Wenn irgendeine Distro mitgeliefert wird, weiß man wenigstens, dass es möglich ist, die Hardware zum Laufen zu bekommen (unter Umständen mit proprietären Treibern).

Kann ich mir auch nicht vorstellen. Wenn, dann nur äußerst wenige.

Am einfachsten ist es wohl, solche Anbieter direkt zu fragen. Die oben genannte Seite im Fellowship-Wiki liefert ja schon mal ein paar Kandidaten. Aus den Antworten könnte man einen schönen Artikel bauen, den man dem von Herrn Leemhuis gegenüberstellen könnte.

Sein Problem ist ein bisschen auch, dass die Zielgruppe nicht 100%ig klar ist.
Zielt er auf Kunden ab, die GNU/Linux draufhaben wollen, a) weil es ihnen um die Freiheit geht oder b) weil sie von den Features überzeugt sind? Oder ist es c) weil sie selbst weder von a) noch von b) Ahnung haben, und nur Linux haben wollen, weil ein Bekannter es ihnen geraten hat.
Im Fall a) fallen die Probleme mit Flash und MP3 weg, dafür wird die Treiberverfügbarkeit weiter eingeschränkt (was der Kunde aber verzeihen sollte, wenn er tatsächlich in Kategorie a) fällt). *
Im Fall c) hingegen kann der Autor davon ausgehen, dass der Kunde ja einen Fachkundigen Bekannten hat, der dem Kunden auch beim Update helfen kann. Diese Zielgruppe braucht in der Regel auch nicht viel mehr als einen Browser, Solitaire und ein paar Büroprogramme, und somit wahrscheinlich auch nicht zwingend die neuste hardware.
Die einzige problematische Zielgruppe ist b). Wer fällt unter b)? Der typische "Gadget Geek". Aber der schafft es in der Regel auch selbst, mit dem OS umzugehen und braucht eher weniger Hilfe.
Wie Joker aber schon sagte, die beste Möglichkeit wird sein, den Rechner ohne OS auszuliefern und es dem Nutzer selbst zu überlassen, welches er haben möchte.
*: ein echter RMS kauft aber so oder so nur ein Lemote Yeelong ;)

Ich vertreibe keine solchen PCs, habe aber mit dem Anwendersupport zu tun und ich denke Herr Leemhuis steigert sich da in ein nebensächliches Problem hinein.
Im Prinzip läuft es ja so: Als 08/15-Händler lege ich Windows bei, das ist "das normale". Niemand wird mir als Händler Fehler in Windows vorwerfen. Der Kunde weiß, dass er spätestens 4 Wochen nach Kauf gleich noch einen Korb voll buntbebilderter "Fach"zeitschriften kaufen muss um die ganzen Windows-Nervigkeiten in den Griff zu bekommen. Das alles lastet niemand dem Händler an. Denn der hat sich ja "normal" verhalten. Auch bei der (mitgelieferten) Hardware leuchtet im System-Tray das Realtek-Icon neben dem ATI-Icon und damit ist der Händler aus der Nummer draußen.
Zumindest in meinem Umfeld gibt es niemanden, der jemals eine Händler-Hotline wegen eines Software-Problems angerufen hätte.
Andersrum ist die Welt allerdings eine andere: Liefert der Händler Linux mit, dann muss er das gut begründen und mit allen Konsequenzen dazu stehen. Da wird eine Vielzahl von Kunden plötzlich hellhörig. Da ist "was anderes" installiert. Da wird geprüft und gesucht. Das andere ist ja zunächst immer erstmal schlechter und wenn man sucht findet man schnell Nachteile oder Dinge die nicht so sind wie man es seöbst erwartet hätte. Dann sitzt man schon fluchend zu Hause, der Gedanke lautet "warum macht der Händler dieses Sch$"!-System drauf wenn das doch diese und jede Fehler hat. Der Griff zum Telefon um den Händler damit zu konfrontieren ist nicht weit. Das sind dann auch Probleme die sich nicht über eine Support-Hotline lösen lassen. Der Kunde ist verärgert.
Das alles hat nicht primär etwas mit der Qualität von Software zu tun. Auch die Support-Zyklen und Treiber-Verfügbarkeit ist bestimmt nicht der ausschlaggebende Grund, wir reden ja nicht von Gamer-PCs sondern von 08/15-Bürorechnern bzw. Heim-Surfstationen. (Auf gefühlten 95% aller derartigen Neurechner kann man ein aktuelles Ubuntu installieren und ohne manuelle Korrekturen nutzen.)
Das Problem liegt meiner Einschätzung nach zum allergrößten Teil in der Erwartungshaltung von Kunden oder deren "technischen Beratern". Es ist einfach so dass es keine unvoreingenommenen Leute mehr gibt. Der überwiegende Teil derer, die sich einen neuen Rechner kaufen haben entweder eigene (Windows-)Erfahrungen oder nehmen zum Computerkauf den Sohn des Nachbarn mit weil der da Ahnung hat.
Dieser Aspekt ließe sich nur lösen, wenn eine kritische Masse an Kunden bereits damit rechnet, dass man die Software aussuchen kann. Wenn also genügend Leute begreifen dass ein Computer auch ohne Windows funktionieren kann und dass es wirklich andere Systeme gibt. Denn sobald jemand aufgeschlossen an das Thema herangeht und bei vermeintlichen Fehlern wenigstens einen kurzen Moment positiv gestimmt bleibt ("vielleicht kann man das ja anders machen"), dann werden auch einige positive Dinge auffallen. Momentan ist das aber nicht so, einen einfachen Anwender mit einem Linux-System auszurüsten erfordert lange Vorträge, Diskussionen, manchmal sogar Schwarzmalerei was proprietäre Software bzw. ein Software-Monopol für Gefahren birgt. Ich biete Linux-Systeme gerne an, habe auch sehr zufriedene Kunden damit, würde aber niemanden dazu raten das anonym "in a box" zu verkaufen, da das nicht klappen kann. Man braucht für diese Aktion einen persönlichen Dialog.
Davon ab: Die Leute, die ein vorinstalliertes Linux-System akzeptieren würden, auf die das geschilderte Problem also nicht zutrifft, die überstehen auch ein Upgrade. Aber die brauchen auch gar kein vorinstalliertes Linux sondern deren erster Schritt mit dem neuen Rechner ist es, die Install-CD in das Laufwerk zu schieben. Von daher ist es herzlich egal was genau darauf läuft und die manchmal angebotenen FreeDOS-Rechner bedienen diese Anforderung.

Danke für Deine Ausführungen, sie decken sich auch mit meinen Beobachtungen.
Ein Zusatzargument fällt mir noch ein: Als Händler kann ich nur ganz schwer überleben, ohne Microsoft-Produkte im Portfolio zu haben. Und wenn ich zumindest einigen Kunden diese Produkte verkaufen möchte, dann ist da ein gewisser Druck, um günstige Preise zu erreichen, pauschal für all Rechner diese Lizenzen zu kaufen.
Insgesamt scheint mir die Masse eine Rolle zu spielen. Wenn ich viele Rechner mit der gleichen Betriebssystemdistribution ausliefere, wird es praktisch billiger. Der Lernaufwand wird durch Geschäft mehr als ausgeglichen und die Margen im Rechner-geschäfts sind niedrig.
Umkehren liesse sich der Trend aus meiner Sicht unter Andrem auch damit, dass menschen IT Service mehr als Dienstleistung verstehen und entsprechen entlohnen würden.

Economy of scale (oder Skaleneffekte in deutsch) nennt man das auch ab und an. Porter [1] beschreibt dies als eine mögliche Erfolgsstrategie im Wettbewerb.

Recht. Man merkt es ja schon im Geschäftsumfeld, wenn $chef denkt, mit $server sind die Probleme ein für alle mal gegessen und $admin spielt sowieso nur Solitär.
