Zuerst möchte ich gerne sagen, dass ich unglücklich bin, dass hier eine E-Mail ohne Einverständnis des Autors veröffentlicht wurde. Außerdem finde ich die Wörter "fsfegate 2.0" und die Tatsache, dass es sich hier um eine komplett unbekannte Person handelt, problematisch.
Trotzdem möchte ich dir, Christian, antworten. Ich werde schlicht die Aussagen aus der zitierten Mail als Fragen von dir persönlich behandeln, die eine Antwort verdienen. Ich werde versuchen so viele davon wie möglich zu beantworten.
Ich bin seit rund einem Jahr in der GA, aber ich spreche nicht für die GA. Wir sind Einzelpersonen mit unterschiedlichen Meinungen und das macht die Stärke unserer Organisation aus. Ich beschreibe hier also meine persönliche Meinung, ohne für jemand anderen zu sprechen und ohne zu behaupten, dass meine Meinung die einzig mögliche wäre.
[Exekutive befragt das Legal-Team weniger]
Ich bin nicht im Legal-Team, deswegen habe ich hier keinen vollständigen Einblick. Wenn die Behauptung stimmt, dann kann ich mir diverse Gründe dafür vorstellen. Vielleicht fühlt sich die Exekutive sicherer in bestimmten Fragen, weil sie bereits in der Vergangenheit dazu vom Legal-Team beraten wurde. Das ist nur ein Beispiel, aber es gibt hier möglicherweise einen guten Grund. Ich kann mir auch vorstellen, dass nicht jedes Mitglied des Legal-Teams der Behauptung zustimmen würde.
[Reduzierte Sichtbarkeit in Rechts- und Politikfragen]
Mein Eindruck ist hier völlig anders und ich würde sogar sagen wir gewinnen an Sichtbarkeit. Aber so oder so haben wir dafür keine belastbaren Zahlen.
[zu starker Fokus auf Kampagnen und fehlende (langfristige) Vision]
Ich denke, dass Kampagnen gut und wichtig sind. Die Idee dahinter ist, klar bestimmte Ziele, die messbar sind, zu erreichen. Ich bin der Meinung diese Kampagnen spielen deshalb bei der Frage "Was wollen wir in den kommenden fünf Jahren erreichen?" eine entscheidende Rolle spielen. Darüber hinaus spielt die Vision auch eine Rolle bei der Auswahl der Kampagnen. Ich sehe gelegentliche Schwächen in dem Bereich, für die wir Lösungen suchen, wenn sie auftreten, aber ich sehe hier kein generelles Problem.
[Kernziele werden weniger beachtet]
Hier bin ich völlig anderer Meinung. Ja, wir denken über Themen wie Gleichberechtigung nach, weil wir der Meinung sind, dass mehr Inklusivität unsere Bewegung stärkt. Das heißt aber nicht, dass wir die Kernziele aus den Augen verlieren. Schaut euch bitte unsere Website und unsere Mailinglisten an und schaut, woran wir wirklich arbeiten. Ihr werdet sehen, dass sich alles um Freie Software dreht und darum wie Freie Software in der Welt wahrgenommen wird. Andere Themen wie Inklusivität sind mehr eine Frage dessen wie wir kommunizieren, zu überlegen welche neuen Kanäle wir verwenden usw..
[Wissen wird nicht institutionalisiert]
Ich würde behaupten, dass eine ganze Menge Wissen sehr wohl institutionalisiert und dokumentiert wird, aber ich stimme zu, dass wir uns hier weiter verbessern können. Ich halte das für ein allgemeines Problem mit wachsenden Communities, dass aus diesem Wachstum eventuell mangelnde Kommunikation ensteht. Ich denke wir halten uns hier besser als andere Organisationen, die ich gesehen habe, aber es gibt immer Möglichkeiten sich zu verbessern und ich habe viele Schritte gesehen, die Abläufe klarstellen und Informationen über Menschen und Veranstaltungen festhalten.

Ich habe das noch nicht selbst erlebt, aber eventuell muss man hier einen Prozess klarstellen und dokumentieren.

Die Situation mit den E-Mails ist etwas besser geworden in den letzten Jahren, dadurch, dass es nur noch eine Konkaktadresse für Anfragen gibt anstatt verschiedener Mailinglisten. Trotzdem denke ich, dass wir hier noch Verbesserungspotential haben. Für mich ist das auch eine Frage der ehrenamtlichen Beteiligung. Ich erwarte nicht von den Angestellten der FSFE, dass sie jederzeit alle Tickets bzw. E-Mails beantworten können. Wir sind eine Organisation, die größtenteils aus Ehrenamtlichen besteht und ich denke wir könnten in vielen Bereichen mehr Beteiligung vertragen. Die FSFE ist nicht das Büro in Berlin, sondern eine Gemeinschaft. Es gibt schlicht viel mehr Arbeit als wir bewältigen können und insbesondere mehr Arbeit als die Angestellten alleine bewältigen können. Also verlassen wir uns auf Eherenamtliche, die einige Aufgaben übernehmen und wir können davon immer mehr brauchen. Das bedeutet, dass manche Dinge nicht erledigt werden und ich sehe Menschen, die ihr Bestes geben um die anstehenden Aufgaben gut zu priorisieren.
[keine Verbesserungen/persönliche Angriffe durch den Vizepräsidenten]
Ich habe im Laufe der Jahre viele Verbesserung gesehen, aber wir können natürlich immer noch mehr tun. Was die persönlichen Angriffe angeht, habe ich Schwierigkeiten mir vorzustellen, dass Heiki (unser Vizepräsident) jemanden persönlich angreift. Ich kenne ihn als außerordentlich anständigen Menschen mit gut durchdachten Meinungen, der hervorragend konstruktiv mit Kritik umgeht. Seine E-Mails sind kurz und bündig (ganz im Gegensatz zu meinen) und vielleicht manchmal etwas direkt. Das kann möglicherweise als Arroganz wahrgenommen wrden, aber ich bin mir sicher, wenn jemand Heiki auf eine problematische Äußerung hinweist, dass Heiki das richtigstellt und sich ggf. entschuldigt. So sind alle meine Begegnungen mit ihm verlaufen und kein einziges Mal habe ich es erlebt, dass er auch nur in die Nähe eines persönlichen Angriffs gekommen wäre.
Ich hoffe das beantwortet einige dieser Dinge für dich, Christian, und für andere auf dieser Liste. Sollten noch Fragen offen sein, fragt bitte jederzeit.

Da stimme ich dir voll zu. Diversität, freie Rede, Informationsfreiheit etc. sind in meinen Augen Grundrechte, die untrennbar mit Freier Software verbunden sind. Ehrlich gesagt habe ich etwas dagegen, wenn E-Mails, die bewusst an eine begrenzte Empfängergruppe geschickt wurden, außerhalb dieser Gruppe veröffentlicht werden. Das zerstört das Vertrauensverhältnis innerhalb der Gruppe und führt dazu, dass die Mitglieder der Gruppe nicht mehr offen diskutieren können.

Ich finde da spielen verschiedene Dinge eine Rolle. Wir sind vollkommen beisammen, dass man Dinge nicht verheimlichen sollte. Die Frage ist aber wie genau man damit umgeht. Der eine Punkt ist eine Frage der Privatssphäre des Aussteigers. Ich finde derjenige hat das Recht zu entscheiden, in welcher Öffentlichkeit das diskutiert wird. In diesem Fall hat derjenige sich an verschiedene interne Mailinglisten gewendet. Dass man sowas dann einfach direkt veröffentlicht, halte ich nicht für richtig. Die enthaltene Kritik könnte man aber öffentlich wiedergeben. Die Frage ist dann nur, was genau macht man? Wenn Kritik reinkommt, antwortet man darauf oder fasst man das zusammen und trägt es auf öffentliche Mailinglisten? Wenn jemand, der sich lange Jahre beteiligt hat, geht, schreibt man das auf öffentliche Listen, dass jemand gegangen ist? Ich finde diese Fragen sind nicht so einfach zu beantworten und die bisherige Vorgehensweise ist eben, dass man sich mit der Kritik an den Punkten auseinandersetzt, an denen sie auftaucht. Die Listen, an die die Mail ging, sind Arbeitslisten, auf denen sich unsere engagierten Freiwilligen organisieren. Hier auf der Liste haben wir eine Mischung aus Leuten, die für die FSFE aktiv sind und Leuten, die vielleicht lieber zuhören oder diskutieren. Ich denke die Bearbeitung der Kritik ist in der ersten Gruppe auf jeden Fall produktiver zu machen als einfach alle mit reinzuziehen, die unsere Strukturen vielleicht gar nicht kennen und die sich auch nicht alle auf dieser Liste angemeldet haben, um sowas zu diskutieren, sondern weil sie über Freie Software reden wolllen.

Das ist auch kein Begriff, der bereits eine Bedeutung hätte. Das kommt letztendlich von der Watergate-Affäre und die amerikanische Presse setzt inzwischen gerne -gate statt -Skandal oder so. Letztlich ist das aber ein etwas unseriöser Begriff und darauf zielte mein Kommentar ab. Ich hätte das gleiche geschrieben, wenn jemand "Fake News", "Lügenpresse" oder sowas geschrieben hätte.

Das kann jeder behaupten, der dazu beigetragen hat und keiner liegt so ganz falsch. Man weiß ja nie so genau warum jemand sich am Ende für etwas entschieden hat.

ich bin bei dir, dass Privatsphäre ein schützenswertes Gut ist. Wenn ich aber etwas an verschiedene Mailinglisten schreibe, egal wie "intern" sie sind, ist diese E-Mail nicht mehr privat. Beinhaltet sie dann noch grundsätzliche Kritik, wird diese E-Mail eine größere Öffentlichkeit erreichen.
Es ist etwas anderes, wenn man einen engen Kreis an Personen anschreibt. Dann sollte es von den Verantwortlichen einen bewussten und transparenten Umgang mit der Kritik geben, d.h. die Punkte ansprechen und sagen, was daran ist, oder auch nicht. So wie du das gemacht hast, wäre ein offener Umgang im Vorfeld gut gewesen.

Du unterstellst demjenigen, der die Vereinbarung der Privatheit unterläuft lautere Absichten. Das kann so sein, muss aber nicht. Deswegen würde ich auch von dem Wort "Whistleblower" Abstand nehmen: Die FSFE ist keine Geheimdienstorganisation, wo es keine Alternative zu dieser Handlungsweise geben mag.

Bevor wir aber über die Lauterkeit oder Unlauterkeit der Motive und den Charakter des (mir bislang unbekannten) Posters spekulieren, sollten wir eine konstruktive Frage stellen:

Gar nichts, da wir ja weder wissen, ob die Kritik berechtigt ist (soferne eine derartig nicht objektivierbare Kritik überhaupt als "berechtigt" bezeichnet werden kann), noch wie andere auf das E-Mail reagiert haben. An sich wissen wir ja nicht mal, wie alt das E-Mail ist.
Das einzige, was wir wirklich wissen, ist, dass der Verfasser nicht wollte, dass sein E-Mail hier in diesem Kreis diskutiert wird, denn hätte er das wollen, dann hätte er es hierher geschickt.
Der ursprüngliche Verfasser des E-Mails hat seine Unzufriedenheit geäußert, und war exakt in der Gruppe, die es betrifft, und damit der Gruppe bei seinem Ausscheiden noch die Möglichkeit gegeben, daraus ihre eigenen Schlüsse zu ziehen. Inwiefern die Punkte berechtigt und konstruktiv waren, kann und will ich als außenstehender nicht beurteilen.
Derjenige, der das E-Mail anonym weitergepostet hat, hat dagegen interne Meinungsverschiedenheiten an die Öffentlichkeit gezogen, was eine fabehlaft funktionierende Methode ist, die Glaubwürdigkeit und Effektivität einer Organisation zu untergraben - man braucht sich nur die verschiedensten politischen Akteure in den letzten paar Jahren anzuschauen. Falls es Ziel der Aktion war, der FSFE zu schaden, wurde das Ziel nicht nur erreicht, es wird durch das laufende weiterdiskutieren und -spekulieren noch unterstützt.

Auch für letztere Taktik wird man nicht nur unter den "politischen Akteuren in den letzten paar Jahren" lehrreiche Beispiele finden.

Ich habe mich dazu geäußert, was hier gerade passiert. Darüber zu spekulieren, wer was aus welcher Absicht macht, liegt mir ferne.
Im Gegenteil gehe ich gerne immer von guten Absichten aus, was mich aber nicht daran hindert, andere darauf hinzuweisen, dass sie möglicherweise aber das genaue Gegenteil erreichen.

Es wäre völlig in Ordnung, wenn jemand intern diese Antworten schreiben würde, dann korrigiert wird und die eigene Position verändert, bevor er damit nach außen geht. Das Beispiel mag etwas groß wirken, es zeigt aus meiner Sicht, dass jemand, der etwas von intern nach außen veröffentlich der urspünglichen Person durchaus schaden können wollte.
Die FSFE zeigt sich in vielen Punkten transparent, in einigen dann aber wieder verschlossen. Z.B. im aktuellen Fall der EU Copyright Directive wird behauptet, dass wir mit Vertretern in Brüssel gesprochen haben und Zusagen erhalten haben. Wer hat mit wem Gesprochen? Wann? Warum? In welchem Kontext? Was für Zusagen haben wir erhalten?
Bei Verhandlungen wäre es oft unklug, wenn wir unsere Strategie und Taktik vorher veröffentlichen würden. Auch im Nachhinein geht das häufig nicht vollständig , da es einige Leute gibt, die sich erstmal vertraulich aufklären lassen wollen und andere welche die Meinungsbildung als Wettstreit ansehen und sich direkt gegen unser Vorgehen richten würden. Ein Beispiel für einen Grund ist, warum auch Journalistinnen ihre Quellen schützen: nur so lassen sich manchmal Hintergrundinformationen gewinnen oder geben.

Das ist leider nicht so, da Freie Software ja für jeden Zweck verwendet werden darf. Wenn wir das verschwiegen, dann klärten wir nicht richtig auf. >:)
Natürlich finden wir als FSFE die Meinungsäußerungsfreiheit prima, weil wir ja nur so über unsere guten Argumente für Freie Software aufklären können. Gleichzeitig finden wir es gut, wenn Diskussionen und Meinungsbildung auch in geschützen Räumen stattfinden darf, was beispielsweise ein Teil der Versammlungsfreiheit darstellt.

Entweder möchten wir über Freie Software aufklären und dafür kämpfen oder vertrauliche Gespräche als eine mögliche Lobby-Organisation führen. Beides geht meiner Meinung nach nicht. Das freie Internet wird für die nächsten 20 Jahre in Europa kaputt gemacht. Freie und Open-Source-Plattformen wie z.B. Mastodon-Instanzen werden Probleme haben, sich gegen Uploadfilter zu wehr zu setzen. Der "freie" Meinungsaustausch wird nur noch innerhalb geschlossener Gruppen auf Internetplattformen stattfinden. Die europäische Kommission entwickelt schon jetzt erste staatliche Eingriffsmöglichkeiten bei Uploadfiltern, z.B. um uns vor Terrorismus zu schützen. Und alles was der Free Software Foundation Europe dazu einfällt ist: Hey, toll, immerhin bleiben Plattformen fürs Codesharing davon ausgenommen. Nein, das ist es nicht. Es wird in Zukunft noch schlechter um Freie Software in Europa bestellt sein. Die EU Copyright Directive macht es für die nächsten Jahrzehnte unmöglich, dass es eine ernsthafte FOSS-Alternative zu Facebook, YouTube und Co. auch nur geben könnte. Der nächste Schritt wird die vom Bundestag beschlossene Kriminalisierung von Nutzerinnen und Nutzern der Open Source Software Tor und VPN-Anbietern und damit von Freifunker*innen sein.

Freie Rede darf auch für jeden Zweck verwendet werden. Genau das hat Stallman in die DNA des Konzepts von Freier Software geschrieben: "To understand the concept, you should think of "free" as in "free speech," not as in "free beer"."
Oder wie Roy Schestowitz sagt: "Free as in freedom means free speech, too."

In der Pressemitteilung steht weiterhin:

beim nächsten Mal schreiben wir es vielleicht noch besser. Trotzdem ist es ein kleiner Erfolg, dass uns wenigstens beim Thema Freie Software zugehört worden ist. Ja, das macht uns nicht zufrieden, aber verschweigen brauchen wir es doch auch nicht.

Ich denke, dass Kampagnen gut und wichtig sind. Die Idee dahinter ist, klar bestimmte Ziele, die messbar sind, zu erreichen. Ich bin der Meinung diese Kampagnen spielen deshalb bei der Frage "Was wollen wir in den kommenden fünf Jahren erreichen?" eine entscheidende Rolle spielen. Darüber hinaus spielt die Vision auch eine Rolle bei der Auswahl der Kampagnen. Ich sehe gelegentliche Schwächen in dem Bereich, für die wir Lösungen suchen, wenn sie auftreten, aber ich sehe hier kein generelles Problem.
Ich möchte an dieser Stelle beispielhaft pdfreaders.org in Erinnerung bringen, deren "volksbildender" Teil sich meinem Eindruck nach längst nicht erledigt hat.

Hier bin ich völlig anderer Meinung. Ja, wir denken über Themen wie Gleichberechtigung nach, weil wir der Meinung sind, dass mehr Inklusivität unsere Bewegung stärkt. Das heißt aber nicht, dass wir die Kernziele aus den Augen verlieren. Schaut euch bitte unsere Website und unsere Mailinglisten an und schaut, woran wir wirklich arbeiten. Ihr werdet sehen, dass sich alles um Freie Software dreht und darum wie Freie Software in der Welt wahrgenommen wird. Andere Themen wie Inklusivität sind mehr eine Frage dessen wie wir kommunizieren, zu überlegen welche neuen Kanäle wir verwenden usw..
Ich dachte bisher immer, dass die FSFE eine Organisation sei, die sich der Propangandierung Freier Software und Offener Standards widmen will. "Inkludierung" - eigentlich selbstverständlich - ist, selbst wenn es da Defizite geben sollte, sicherlich kein "Kernziel", sondern eher als "Hilfsziel" zu benennen. das siehst Du wohl genauso.
Die Frage ist dann nicht, was - historisch gewachsen - auf den Webseiten steht, sondern worauf man aktuell Ressourcen verwendet, denn man lebt nicht in der Vergangenheit, sondern in der Gegenwart.
Die geeignete und konstruktive Form der Auseinandersetzung mit einer solchen Kritik scheint mir zu sein, zunächst in Erfahrung zu bringen, wie der andere Eindruck entstanden ist.
[Wissen wird nicht institutionalisiert]
Ich würde behaupten, dass eine ganze Menge Wissen sehr wohl institutionalisiert und dokumentiert wird, aber ich stimme zu, dass wir uns hier weiter verbessern können. Ich halte das für ein allgemeines Problem mit wachsenden Communities, dass aus diesem Wachstum eventuell mangelnde Kommunikation ensteht. Ich denke wir halten uns hier besser als andere Organisationen, die ich gesehen habe, aber es gibt immer Möglichkeiten sich zu verbessern und ich habe viele Schritte gesehen, die Abläufe klarstellen und Informationen über Menschen und Veranstaltungen festhalten.
Auch nach Deiner Aussage scheint diese Kritik konstruktiv zu sein und einen "wahren Kern" zu enthalten.

Ich habe im Laufe der Jahre viele Verbesserung gesehen, aber wir können natürlich immer noch mehr tun. Was die persönlichen Angriffe angeht, habe ich Schwierigkeiten mir vorzustellen, dass Heiki (unser Vizepräsident) jemanden persönlich angreift. Ich kenne ihn als außerordentlich anständigen Menschen mit gut durchdachten Meinungen, der hervorragend konstruktiv mit Kritik umgeht. Seine E-Mails sind kurz und bündig (ganz im Gegensatz zu meinen) und vielleicht manchmal etwas direkt. Das kann möglicherweise als Arroganz wahrgenommen wrden, aber ich bin mir sicher, wenn jemand Heiki auf eine problematische Äußerung hinweist, dass Heiki das richtigstellt und sich ggf. entschuldigt. So sind alle meine Begegnungen mit ihm verlaufen und kein einziges Mal habe ich es erlebt, dass er auch nur in die Nähe eines persönlichen Angriffs gekommen wäre.
Auch hier erschiene mir eine Klärung, beispielsweise durch einen unbeteiligten Dritte (wenn auch nicht unter dem Regime eines 'code of conduct') sinnvoll.

Insgesamt ist es erfreulich, dass Du Dich so schnell gemeldet und umfassend Stellung bezogen hast. Allerdings sollte damit das Thema _nicht_ abgeschlossen sein.
Es war in der Vergangenheit ein großer Vorzug der FSFE und ihr zum Vorteil, dass sie sich mit Kritik, vor allem und auch dann, wenn sie von "Internen" kam, intensiv auseinandergesetzt hat.
