Eigentlich wäre eine Übersetzung auch nicht direkt erlaubt gewesen, da nur das "wörtliche" Kopieren erlaubt ist.
Deshalb sende ich das hier als ein Zwischenstück, auf dass jemand die übersetzung verfollständige, damit wir sie prüfen und der FSF zukommen lassen können.
Bisher habe ich die Überschrift, den Absatz mit den proprietären Beispielsprogrammen und ein paar Tippfehler korrigiert:
Die Freie Software-Gemeinschaft nach 20 Jahren: Was nun, nach großen, aber nicht vollständigen Erfolgen.
Es ist heute 20 Jahre her, das ich meine Arbeit beim MIT niedergelegt habe um ein freies Betriebssystem zu entwickeln, GNU. Während wir nie ein komplettes GNU System freigegeben haben das produktiv einsetzbar ist, wird eine variante des GNU-Systems von 10 Millionen Leuten benutzt welchen das meist nichtmal bewusst ist.
Freie Software bedeutet nicht "Gratis", es bedeutet das die Benutzer das Programm frei benutzen können, den Quellcode studieren und ändern können, und es weitergeben können mit oder ohne änderungen, gratis oder gegen Gebühr.
Ich hatte gehofft das ein freies Betriebssystem den Weg öffnen würde für immer der Unterwerfung propertiärer Software zu entkommen. Ich habe die hässlichkeit erfahren die nicht freie Software seinen Usern auferlegt, und ich war gezwungen zu fliehen und anderen diese Möglichkeit auch zu geben.
Nicht-freie Software beinhaltet ein antisoziales System welches Mitarbeit und Gemeinschaft verbietet. Es ist normalerweise nicht möglich in den Quellcode zu schauen, man kann nicht sagen welche bösen Tricks oder dumme Bugs sie beinhaltet. Wenn man etwas nicht mag kann man es nicht ändern. Und das schlimmste von allen, es ist verboten sie mit anderen zu teilen. Das verbot Software zu teilen bedeutet die Bildung der Gesellschaft zu beschneiden.
Heute haben wir eine große Gemeinschaft an Benutzern, die GNU, Linux und andere freie Software benutzen. Tausende von Leuten möchten das erweitern und haben das Ziel mehr Computerbenutzer von freier Software zu überzeugen adaptiert. Doch was bedeutet es "freie Software zu benutzen"? Bedeutet es von propertiärer Software zu flüchten oder lediglich freie Software neben nicht-freier zu installieren? Sind wir darauf aus Leuten die Freiheit zu zeigen, oder sie nur in unsere Arbeit einzuweisen? In anderen Worten, arbeiten wir für den Frieden, oder haben wir dieses Ziel mit dem flachen Ziel der Popularität ersetzt?
Es ist einfach diese Angewohnheit der Unterscheidung zu übeschauen, denn in vielen Situationen macht es keinen Unterschied. Wenn Du versuchst eine Person davon zu überzeugen ein freies Programm auszuprobieren, oder GNU/Linux installierst, wird das zur gleichen praktischen Anwendung führen. In anderen Situationen jedoch spornen die zwei Ziele sehr unterschiedliche Tätigkeiten an.
Was sollten wir zum Beispiel sagen wenn der nicht-freie Video-Treiber "Hackelig", die nicht-freie Datenbank "Prophezeihung" oder der nicht-freie Indonesische Sprach-Interpreter mit Wortschatz für GNU/Linux veröffentlicht werden? Sollten wir den Entwicklern für diese "Unterstützung" unseres Systems danken, oder sollten wir dieses nicht-freie Programm wie irgendein anderes nicht-freies betrachten -- wie eine attraktive Beeinträchtigung, eine Versuchung der Knechtschaft, oder als ein Problem was gelöst werden müsste.
Wenn Du als Ziel die erhöhte Popularität bestimmter freier Software nimmst, und versuchst mehr leute zu überzeugen freie Programme zu benutzen, dann würdest Du denken das diese nicht-freien Programme helfende Beiträge zu diesem Ziel sind.
Es ist hart zu entscheiden ob die Verfügbarkeit propertiärer Software hilft GNU/Linux populärer zu machen. Wenn die weitverbreitete Benutzung von GNU oder Linux das ultimative Ziel unserer Gemeinschaft ist, sollten wir logischerweise alle Anwendungen die darauf laufen appplaudierend begrüßen, ob frei oder nicht.
Aber wenn unser Ziel die Freiheit ist, so ändert das alles. Benutzer können nicht frei sein wenn sie ein ein nicht-freies Programm verwenden. Um die Bürger des Cyberspaces zu befreien müßen wir nicht-freie Programme durch freie ersetzen, und nicht akzpetieren. Nicht-Freie Software ist kein Beitrag zu unserer Gemeinschaft, sie ist der Versuch den Frieden fern zu halten.
Es gibt zwei allgemeine Beweggründe warum man ein freies Programm entwickeln will. Einer ist, dass es kein anderes Programm gibt welches eine bevorstehende Arbeit erledigen soll. Leider beseitigt der gebrauch eines nicht-freien Programmes diesen Beweggrund (insofern eines Existiert). Der andere Beweggrund ist es "frei zu sein", welcher die Leute dazu bewegt freien Ersatz für nicht-freie Programme zu erschaffen. Dieses Motiv ist das einzigste welches die Arbeit erledigen kann. Schon allein ein neues aber nicht-fertiges freies Ersatzprogramm zu benutzen, auch wenn es technisch nicht mit dem nicht-freien Modell mithalten kann, hilft die Entwickler anzuspornen und die Entwicklung voranzutreiben bis es überlegener wird.
Diese nicht-freien Programme sind nicht trivial. Die Entwicklung freier Ersatz-Software ist grosse Arbeit die jahre dauern kann. Diese Arbeit braucht die Hilfe zukünftiger Hacker, junger Leute von heute, die dazu inspiriert werden müßen beier freier Software mitzuhelfen. Was können wir heute tun um zu helfen, die Leute zu überzeugen, zukünftig, die notwendige Betreuung und die Zielsetzung beizubehalten um diese Arbeit zu beenden?
Der wirkungsvollste Weg unsere Gemeinschaft in der Zukunft zu verstärken ist es das Verständnis des Wertes der Freiheit zu verbreiten, sowie mehr Leuten die moralische unakzeptanz nicht-freier Software beizubringen. Menschen welche langfristig den Wert der Freiheit erkennen, sind die wesentlichste und beste Verteidigung.

Besser: Was sollten wir beispielsweise sagen, wenn der nicht-freie Video-Treiber "Niewieder", die nicht-freie Datenbank "Prophezeihung" oder der nicht-freie Interpreter der Sprache "Indonesien" samt Bibliotheken für GNU/Linux veröffentlicht werden?
