Generell würde ich sagen, dass es schwer ist, sich auf einzelne Universitäten zu konzentrieren. Wenn freie Software im akademischen Umfeld ensteht, dann meistens in Kooperation mit anderen Unis oder zwischen Unis und Forschungs-Instituten.
Das heißt, die organisatorische Grenze verläuft entlang der Projekte, Themengebiete und Fachbereiche. Sie verläuft nicht entlang der Universitäts- und Institutsgrenzen.

Abgesehen von der Nachhaltigkeit des Zusammentragens stellt sich auch die selbe Frage bei den Projekten selbst:
Wurde die Freie Software im Rahmen einer Diplom/Bachelor/ Masterarbeit erstellt, oder gar mit Fördergeldern, und liegt danach auf Eis? Oder ist die Freie Software ein dauerhaft gepflegtes Projekt, das die weitere Forschungsarbeit begleitet und in das immer wieder gute Ideen einfließen?
Ich denke, auch da muss man differenzieren. Ist die Software lediglich das Endergebnis einer bestimmten, abgeschlossenen Tätigkeit? Oder ist die Software ein gemeinsames Stück infrastruktur, das immer weiter genutzt, gepflegt und ausgebaut wird?

natürlich liessen sich weitere Kriterien finden, die sich in einem Verzeichnis erfassen liessen. Die FSFE und freecode haben das ja mal probiert, die Fachverlage wie Heise veröffentlichen regelmäßig etwas. Klar ist auch: je wertvoller die Zusammenstellung, desto anstrengender wird es diese aufzubauen und zu erhalten.

Die sprachlichen Schwierigkeiten sind übrigens dber Grund, warum ich vorschlage zwischen dem Produkt == Software, der Initiative darum und Projekten im engeren Sinne zu unterscheiden. [1]
Egal, ob die Initiative schon verebbt ist, das Software-Produkt bleibt ja (meistens) verfügbar. Und jederzeit kann sich eine neue Initiativen darum bilden.
Es gibt übrigens gepflegte Software mit einer aktiven Initiative, die trotzdem kaum jemand anwendet, weil die Qualität nicht gut ist.

Das liegt aber an der Art, wie in Deutschland allgemein Projekte der öffentlichen Hand gefahren werden. Für ein Jahr gibt es Budget. Da wird was damit gemacht. Dann kein Budget und alles wieder fürn Popps.

Es gibt bestimmt zu Hunderten Menschen an Universitäten (die Fach- oder anderen Hochschulen scheinst Du nicht zu meinen), welche Software veröffentlichen. Zum Beispiel im Zuge von Abschlußarbeiten oder anderen Forschungsprojekten.
Meinst Du damit Produkte, bei welchen die Universitöt die exklusiven Nutzungsrechte hält. So was, wie "(c) Uni-Osnabrück"? Okay ...

Durch meinen Bruder bin ich auf Emu [1] gestoßen. Spannend vor allem, weil es eben mal nicht aus den "harten" Fächern kommt, sondern in Tool für Phonetiker_Innen ist.

Na zum Glück eines der weichen Fächer! Wäre ja schlimm, wenn man für so einen Firlefanz aus Spracherkennung und Computerlinguistik auch noch echte Nerds bräuchte. Daimler und Google werden froh sein, ihre Personalpolitik dahingehend umstrukturieren zu können.
Informatiker und Mathematiker werden wir dann auch leider demnächst nicht mehr auf Linguistenpartys eingeladen, schade. Dafür sind wir wohl zu hart.
