über das neuste der beiden Konkurrenten angesehen habe, gerate ich echt ins zweifeln, ob das mit der Free-Software-Revolution so einfach wird. (PS: Woran erinnert mich nur der neue Mediaplayer von M$? *g*)
Na, mal sehen, was KDE>=4.2 und Gnome mit GTK3.x so bringen wird --- das Potenzial ist ja echt da, und bis Windows 7 erscheint, dauert es sicher noch eine Ewigkeit :).

Das freedesktop-Projekt könnte hier auch noch einiges bewirken (bzw. hat es auch schon). Eine erste Idee wäre ja z.B. mal eine einheitliche API für GUIs, damit KDE-Nutzer endliche die GTK- und GNOME-User die Qt-Dialoge loswerden.

Ein wesentlicher Aspekt, wenn nicht sogar DER wesentliche Aspekt der "Free-Software-Revolution" soll ja sein, dass Freie Software eingesetzt wird, nicht weil sie in allen Punkten besser ist als proprietäre Software sondern weil sie frei ist. Darin liegt auch gerade die Arbeit der FSFs, sonst könnten wir aufhören mit der Bildungs- und Lobbyarbeit und das Geld ins Programmieren stecken.

Das ist auch sehr cool, dass das geht (obwohl diese Universal Binaries durchaus auch ihre Vorteile haben). Solche Punkte waren es, die ich genau damit meinte, dass FS auch durchaus enorme Feature-Vorteile hat.
Aber sorry: Usability ist kein "grafisches Geplänkel", es geht hier auch nicht um "Wobbly Windows" oder dergleichen, sondern tatsächlich um die Benutzbarkeit für Endanwender :)

Aber auch der Versuch wenigstens den Unterbau (Betriebssystem, Datenbank) frei zu halten scheitert oft. So wird oft nur MS-SQL Server unterstützt, der Client läuft sowieso nur unter Windows.
3. Fehlende Kenntnisse der IT-Abteilung. Freie Software erfordert Lernwillen und eine gewisse Einarbeitungszeit. Zudem ist die Dokumentation leider nicht immer optimal. Bevor sich also die Admins z. B. in das aufsetzen eines gut abgesicherten Mailservers mit $FREEMTA einarbeiten wird halt die proprietäre Appliance geholt die mit "drei Klicks" zu konfigurieren ist.
4. Fehlende Zukunftssicherheit. Oft höre ich das Argument, dass ein freies Softwareprojekt plötzlich nicht mehr weiter entwickelt werden könnte. Tatsächlich gibt es ja mehr als genug Projekte die eingeschlafen und in der Versenkung verchwunden sind. Ich halte dann immer dagegen, das dies auch bei proprietärer Software geschehen kann, weil die Herstellerfirma bankrott ist oder die Software aus finanziellen Erwägungen nicht mehr weiter entwickelt.
5. Fehlender Support. Natürlich gibt es professionellen Support für freie Software. Aber dann ist das Hauptargument gegenüber der Geschäftsführung - der Kostenfaktor - weg.
Diese Liste ist sicher nicht vollständig. Aber was sind dann die Vorteile freier Software? Dass sie frei ist ist leider kein Argument in der Businesswelt, denn Freiheit ist ja kein Selbstzweck. Vielmehr muss man IMHO mit Argumenten kommen, die aus der Freiheit resultieren.
- Freie Software ist sicherer: Da der Quellcode offen liegt ist man sicher, dass die Software genau das macht, was sie tun soll. "Spyware"-Funktionen sind ausgeschlossen.
- Die Qualitätssicherung freier Software schlägt jede firmeninterne QS. Nur bei freier Software kann jeder auf den Code sehen und sich von seiner Qualität überzeugen.
- Freie Software ist anpassungsfähig. Oft findet man Software, die zu 95% das macht was man will. Die restlichen 5% kann man selbst implementieren. Bei proprietärer Software muss man entweder weitersuchen oder irgendeine Frickellösung basteln, damit die fehlende Funktionalität emuliert werden kann. Oft wird GNU/Linux ja als Frickelsystem bezeichnet, bei meinen Windows-Kollegen habe ich jedoch mehr abenteuerliches Gefrickel gesehen als mir lieb ist.
- Freie Software gibt Zukunftsicherheit durch dokumentierte Formate. Dadurch ist sicher gestellt, dass man auch noch in 20 Jahren die Daten lesen kann.
- Freie Software gibt Rechtssicherheit. Proprietäre Lizenzbedingungen sind oft undurchschaubar und ich habe bis jetzt noch keine Firma gesehen, bei der nicht die Benutzung der einen oder anderen proprietären Software in einer rechtlichen Grauzone lag. Oft eben auch deswegen weil die Lizenz nicht ohne ein Rechtsgutachten zu verstehen ist. Freie Software dagegen kann man in jeder Weise benutzen die einem beliebt, Punkt.

Bei dem Kostenfaktor sollte eigentlich immer mittel bis langfristig argumentiert werden. Und der ist mit professionellem Support da. Les mal Reiter 2004 (siehe unten).
Diese Liste ist sicher nicht vollständig. Aber was sind dann die Vorteile freier Software?
Ich finde zu dem Thema auch den Artikel von Wheeler 2005 dazu gut. Er trägt mehrere Arguemnte zusammen.
Außerdem: Wenn man ein Verfechter von Mindeskapazitäten / Kernkompetenz (Thema bei Verwaltungsmodernisierung) ist, wie z.B.:
"Bei allen Überlegungen in Richtung Auslagerung ist jedoch stets zu bedenken, daß die strategische Steuerungsfähigkeit auch dadurch sichergestellt bleiben muß, daß /Know how und Mindestkapazitäten/ für die laufende Steuerung des Leistungsprozesses wie auch für den Fall des Selbsteintritts bei Ausfall Externer vorhanden sind. Konkret bedeutet dies, daß möglichst nie die gesamte Leistungskapazität durch Auslagerung abgebaut werden sollte, sondern stets ein bestimmter Eigenleistungsanteil (z.B. 20-25 v.H.) erhalten bleibt." [Hervorhebung im Orginal] (Reichard 1998:152)
dann geht das mit Freier Software auch einfacher. Bei unternehmenskritischen Aufgaben können XY meiner Mitarbeiter mit an der Software arbeiten -- beim Ausfall des Anbieter können diese die Basisfunktion aufrecht erhalten.
Und bei Auslagerungsentscheidungen kann man bei Freier Software -- da sie meist modularer ist -- meiner Meinung nach auch die Prozesskette besser analysieren und qualifiziertere Make-or-Buy-Entscheidungen treffen.

Dies ist ein sehr gutes Argument für Freie Software. Es passiert oft, dass Anbieter ihren Konkurrenten aufkaufen und dann entweder nur noch unwillig Support leisten oder einfach das komplette Produkt einstampfen. Bei Freier Software kann das so nicht passieren. Im Zweifelsfall muss ich mehr in die Weiterentwicklung investieren, aber es kann mir niemand die Pistole auf die Brust setzen.

Aber dann ist das Hauptargument gegenüber der Geschäftsführung - der Kostenfaktor - weg.
Das sollte eben nicht das Hauptargument sein, da es eher ein schwaches ist.

eigentlich gar nichts :). Ich wollte nur einmal abseits von allem politischem / gesellschaftlichem über die Usability und Features freier Software sinnieren. Um genau zu sein war ich --- als ich die Email schrieb --- etwas betrübt, dass eine gute Freundin von mir, mit der ich schon viel über digitale Bürgerrechte (u.a. freie Software) diskutiert habe, die mir sogar schon beim Verteilen von FSFE-Flyern geholfen hat, sich so ein schickes neues Alu-Mac-Book gekauft hat; und ich sie nicht davon überzeugen konnte, sich z.B. ein Thinkpad zu kaufen, das Windows zu refunden und ein freies Betriebssystem darauf zu installieren.
Und um ehrlich zu sein: Dafür habe ich sogar durchaus Verständnis: Von der Usability-Seite gesehen ist so ein neuer Apple als Gesamtpaket jedem System mit freier Software --- trotz der enormen Fortschritte freier Software in diesem Bereich (was z.B. so ein Ubuntu mit Gnome inzwischen alles schon OOTB kann, ist einfach erstaunlich) --- einfach deutlich voraus. Das muss ich bei all meiner Liebe zu freier Software neidvoll zugeben... (dass Apple diese SW-Stabilität nur durch ihre kleine HW-Basis erreichen kann, ändert daran erst einmal wenig). Diese Freundin von mir *kann* und will nicht an ihrem System herumfriemeln, bis es das macht, was sie möchte, sondern sie will es kaufen und benutzen, mehr nicht.

Selbstverständlich. Nur musst du eben bedenken, dass für einen Hacker die vier Freiheiten ein Feature sind, das er direkt spüren kann: Er *kann* die Software zu jedem Zweck verwenden, sie studieren, sie verändern und veränderte Versionen weitergeben.
Ein Endanwender hingegegen profitiert von den vier Freiheiten nur mittelbar und sie sind für ihn selten direkt spürbar. Natürlich musst man gerade diese Endanwender darüber aufklären, wie wichtig der großflächige Einsatz freier Software für die Gesellschaft ist, und deshalb sollen *natürlich* die FSFs *nicht* die Bildungs- und Lobbyarbeit einstellen und das Geld ins Programmieren stecken.
Aber der normale Nutzer lässt sich mit coolen Features im Gepäck und inbesondere einer hervorragenden Usability eben *sehr* viel leichter von der Wichtigkeit freier Software überzeugen :)

Keine Frage. In vielen Punkten ist freie Software der proprietären Welt featuremäßig sogar klar voraus ---- selbst in einigen Usability-Bereichen: Die Softwarepaketverwaltung, Kommandozeile (nun gut, die hat OSX inzwischen auch), ...
Aber es treten unter meinem GNU-System eben doch ab und an Frickelprobleme auf, die man einem normalen Endanwender einfach nicht zumuten kann.
Das größte Problem sind aber imho die "Windows-Power-User", die mit ihrem Halbwissen schon einiges unter Windows hinbekommen. Für die ist der Umstieg auf GNU oder *BSD ohne Freunde, die ihnen helfen können, quasi noch nicht leistbar. Für meine Mutter hingegen, die nur im WWW surft, Texte schreibt und Mails verschickt, funktioniert GNU/Linux genausogut oder -schlecht wie Windows. Außer, sie kommt mal wieder mit einer "Multimedia-CD-ROM" an, die ihr ihre Kollegin mitgegeben hat und die nur unter Windows läuft...
Sagen wir es einmal so: Es liegt manchmal an der Software selbst, oft aber auch an den ökonomischen und politischen Rahmenbedingungen. Für den Enduser spielt das aber oft keine Rolle, selbst wenn man ihn über die Probleme z.B. proprietärer Formate aufklärt und er sie versteht: Wenn sein Yotube unter Linux nicht geht, dann geht sein Youtube unter Linux nicht.
Diese gilt es aufzubrechen, wenn wir Freier Software zum Erfolg in der Gesellschaft verhelfen wollen.
Das ist zumindest ein unverzichtbarer, sehr wichtiger Teil, keine Frage.
Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: Ein Kumpel von mir hat mich wieder aufgebaut. Er meinte, der Fortschritt freier Software sei so groß gewesen in den letzten Jahren und sie hätte so gut "aufgeholt" in vielen Bereichen, dass man hoffen kann, dass FOSS die proprietäre Welt irgendwann auch einmal featuremäßig überrunden wird :).

Allderings trägt mir Apple in Sachen Nutzereinschränkungen schon ein paar Ticks zu dick auf (Anwendungen einfach vom iPhone löschen, DRM, ...) und präsentiert sich zudem auch noch als "die gute Seite der Macht". Wenn das pöse M$ das machen würde, gäbe es einen riesen Aufschrei in der Bevölkerung.
Erstaunlich ist ja zudem, dass die Apple-Jünger viel religiöser sind als alle FS-Anhänger zusammen :)

PDF ist zwar offen insofern das die Spezifikation mittlerweile ISO-Standard ist, doch laut der Definition der FSFE ist ein offener Standard jener der: "unabhängig von einem einzelnen Anbieter geleitet und weiterentwickelt wird in einem Prozess, der einer gleichberechtigten Teilnahme von Wettbewerbern und Dritten offen steht"

Und so wird allgemein betrachtet jedes Feature-Problem irgendwann von jemandem gelöst werden.
Selbst für den oft genannten Aspekt Benutzbarkeit (Usability) gibt es Initiativen[0] im FOSS-Bereich.
Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: Ein Kumpel von mir hat mich wieder aufgebaut. Er meinte, der Fortschritt freier Software sei so groß gewesen in den letzten Jahren und sie hätte so gut "aufgeholt" in vielen Bereichen, dass man hoffen kann, dass FOSS die proprietäre Welt irgendwann auch einmal featuremäßig überrunden wird :).
Na logen und dafür hab ich auch ein passendes Beispiel: Als Mac OS X erschien war ein Desktop mit 3D-Features ausgestattet ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal dieses Betriebssystems. Heute gibt es compiz und awn.
Außerdem gibt es erfreuliche Entwicklung wie FreeDesktop.org deren Entwicklungen allen freien Desktopumgebungen zugute kommen, wie zB. der NetworkManager.
Nebenbei bemerkt finde ich das bei der Featurediskussion immer stark der Fokus auf Desktopbetriebssystem liegt. Ich bin beruflich auch im Embeddedbereich unterwegs und dort erfährt GNU und Linux seit Jahren einen schwindelerregenden Höhenflug:
* Es gibt da zB. eine sehr vielversprechende Prozessorarchitektur mit dem Namen AVR32. GNU/Linux ist eines der wenigen Betriebssysteme das man darauf laufen lassen kann - es gibt IMHO noch nicht mal ein Windows CE/Mobile dafür.
* In China bastelt man an dieser Loongson CPU die wie ein MIPS64 arbeitet. Das Teil soll in Laptops und Desktops zum Einsatz kommen. Window XP/Vista und MacOS X gibt es für diese CPU nicht, GNU/Linux schon seit Jahren.
Das es jedoch wichtig ist, die eigentlichen Werte freier Software zu vermitteln, habe ich gerade wieder in einem Kundenprojekt erfahren. Ich werde eventuell später dazu mal was bekannt machen, sobald das in trockenen Tüchern ist. Nur soviel: Es handelt sich um einen öffentlichen Auftraggeber, der vor seinem Entscheidern (also das Ministerium) mit den Vorzügen einer freien und quelloffenen Implementierung argumentiert hat. Diesem 'Endanwender' ist es *enorm* wichtig, dass er beliebig über den Quellcode verfügen kann, auch wenn er selbst nicht in der Lage ist ihn zu schreiben ...
