Die Zahlen sind sicherlich richtig und sehr positiv, helfen aber im Desktopbereich nicht wirklich weiter.
Maßgeblich ist im Desktopbereich nicht das Betriebssystem, sondern die Office-Suite. Hier bildet eine proprietäre Office-Suite weiterhin den berüchtigten "Burggraben" um ein unfreies Betriebssystem.
In allen Fällen, in denen eine Office-Suite keine Rolle spielt, hatte das in Rede stehende proprietäre Betriebssystem im Endeffekt wenig Chancen.
Hinzu kommt natürlich noch der Umstand, dass im Desktop-Bereich die Betriebssysteme in der Regel (Ausnehmen muss bekanntlich mühsam suchen) vorinstalliert sind.
Das erklärt auch den Erfolg von Android in der Smartphone- und Tabletsparte mit.
Es ist zwar traurig, aber wahr, dass die allermeisten Endanwender noch nie ein Betriebssystem selbst installiert haben.

Und die wären? F-Droid ist ein Anfang, aber hechelt Meilen hinter dem unsäglich besch...enen "Play Store" hinterher.
Die heutigen Android-User kriegst Du nicht mit dem Argument "Du benutzt ein Telefon mit freier Software" - zum einen, weil sie es nicht verstehen, zum einen weil es nicht wahr ist, und sie es deshalb auch nicht verstehen können.
Das Problem sind auch nicht die Anbieter, sondern die Software-Hersteller, die nur zu gerne den GoldenCage von Apple und Google betreten, um mit 30%-Margen oder GoogleAds-Einblendungen wirklich meinen, den Usern etwas gutes zu tun. Wollen Sie nicht, sie wollen nur ans Geld, und da scheiden sich sehr schnell die Geister, wenn es zwei Global Player gibt. Leider gibt es nur zwei - F-Droid ist nur ein 50ster.
Wenn wir also noch etwas an den beiden Kraken tun können, dann, F-Droid & Co. richtig groß machen, indem wir Geld in die Hand nehmen, den Apple Store vollkommen doomen, und Daumen drücken. Oder: offline gehen. Kommt immer mehr in Mode.

Das erste neue Telefon war mit dem N9 massenmarktreif als Elop geholt worden ist. Gerüchten nach hat er das dann ausgebremst. Leutet mir ein, es hätte seine Strategie gefährdet. Ansonsten war Nokia gut darin Dinge auf den Markt zu bringen.
Microsoft hatte nie das Monopol, das Android (=Google) heute hat.
Doch, zweitweise waren 95% der neuen Benutzergeräte mit Windows betrieben. Zur Zeit sind wir bei (grob geschätzt 2/3) Geräten mit Android und meist mit angepaßten Software-Varianten.
Die tollen eingebetteten Anwendungen (~Apps) sind KEINE freie Software - lediglich das Betriebsystem ist es, wenn man die immer, immer, immer beigelegten GApps außen vor ließe. So viele Konjunktive...
Trotzdem ist das mehr Freie Software, als die Nutzer im Massenmarkt früher auf Kleingeräten hatten.
Und dann sollten wir die nächsten Schritt einfordern und anregen!
Und die wären?

Das habe ich auch nicht behauptet, die SDKs sind aber über die Jahre zugänglicher geworden und enthalten mehr und mehr Freie Software.

Hast schon recht, aber jetzt mal dir mal aus, was ohne Android wäre. Allein mit Apple und MS sähe das echt finster aus, und wir hätten wahrscheinlich auch keine Single-Board-Computer wie RasPi oder Odroid, die ja auch irgendwie als (halbfreie) Nebenprodukt aus dem halbfreien Mobilmarkt rausgefallen sind. Es ist natürlich traurig, dass wir den großen Bruder brauchten um diese Tür für uns aufzuhalten (und imho. immernoch brauchen).
Die heutigen Android-User kriegst Du nicht mit dem Argument "Du benutzt ein Telefon mit freier Software" - zum einen, weil sie es nicht verstehen, zum einen weil es nicht wahr ist, und sie es deshalb auch nicht verstehen können.
Da ist meine Erfahrung in der Nachwuchsförderung definitiv anders! Einem Gymnasiasten zu erzählen, dass er dieses komische Linux schon in irgendeiner Form auf seinem Telefon nutzt ist meiner Erfahrung nach ein unheimlich guter Hebel um mehr Interesse für den technologischen Hintergrund, und in zweiter Abstraktion auch für Freie Software zu wecken.

Dazu müsste aber erstmal gegeben sein, dass F-Droid das Geld auch haben will. Ich hatte dem Team schon zwei mal Vorschläge zur Finanzierung neuer (und wichtiger) Features gemacht, aber nichtmal eine Antwort habe ich darauf erhalten.
Nicht missverstehen: F-Droid ist super, ich nutze es fast ausschließlich und habe schon viele Bekannte dazu gebracht, einige Apps darüber zu installieren. Aber damit WIR es groß machen können, müssen DIE auch mitspielen - und ebenfalls groß werden wollen.

Trotz Microsoft-Quasimonopol konnte man vor zehn Jahren auf nahezu allen im Handel verkauften Computern relativ problemlos eine GNU/Linux-Distribution installieren. Für die Computer, die dem Microsoft-Quasimonopol unterliegen, gilt das heute immer noch. Rein stückzahlenmäßig sind sie aber inzwischen unterlegen, und die Installation von GNU/Linux ist auf den Konkurrenzprodukten nicht mehr ohne weiteres möglich bzw. in einigen Fällen faktisch unmöglich.
Ich sehe keinen Gewinn für die Nutzer.

Für die Computer, die dem Microsoft-Quasimonopol unterliegen, gilt das heute immer noch.
Naja, UEFI and the Anforderung an die Verwendung von "SecureBoot" bei Arm Plattformen hätte die Situation schon verschlechtert.
Rein stückzahlenmäßig sind sie aber inzwischen unterlegen, und die Installation von GNU/Linux ist auf den Konkurrenzprodukten nicht mehr ohne weiteres möglich bzw. in einigen Fällen faktisch unmöglich.
Vergleich müssen wir die neuen kleinen Geräte, wie Smartphones, aber mit ihresgleichen.
Ich sehe keinen Gewinn für die Nutzer.
Gehe in the nur iPhone, WindowsCE und Siemens Telefon/ Nokia Symbian OS Zeit zurück, da ging auf den Telefon viel weniger für die Nutzer. Die Vielfalt hat zugenommen und so Geräte wie das Fairphone ermöglicht und Geräte bei denen Du Administrator werden kannst, um Replicant oder eine freie Variante von CyanogenMod zu installieren.

Klar, irgendwie geht es schon noch, aber der Weg ist klar: "Rooten schmälert unsere Gewinne, also lasst das mal besser."
Ein Fairphone ist halt immer nur ein Abklatsch; sowas wie Linux wiederholt sich im Mobile-Markt eben nicht, dort sehen wir die Hardware-Monopolisten erstarken mit deren Software-Monopolen oder -Oligopolen. Das nenne ich schlecht.
Warum? Ohne Android hätte Apple niemals diesen Hype erlebt, denn Jede/r meinte mit Erstarken von Android, plötzlich immer online mit seinem Telefon sein zu müssen (nimmt glücklicherweise wieder ab), und mit Android (=billigeren Geräten) ging das.
Das Online-Sein ging einher mit einem sprunghaften Anstieg Freier Software im Mobil-Segment, ausgelöst von 1-€-Geräten, benutzt von 1-€-Käufern, die sich einen Scheiß darum scheren, was Freie Software ist. Für die Meisten ist Android nicht mehr als ein billigeres iPhone, und würde das letztere 100 € kosten, würden sie das kaufen.
So, what the... - Bewegung in den Mobile-Markt wurde gebracht, aber was soll das alles: Brot oder Spiele? ;-)

Vorsicht, hier gibt's das Potential zu einem Missverständnis. Die weiterentwickelte Sicherheitsarchitektur erschwert das hinzufügen eines Root-Zugangs im Android-System, das ist richtig. Angemerkt sei jedoch, dass nur einige prominente Hersteller ihre Geräte überhaupt ohne Root- Zugang ausliefern.
Eine Vielzahl der Geräte von weniger bekannten Herstellern erlaubt vom Werk her ein Rootlogin. Das dürfte sich auch mit neuen Android-Versionen nicht prinzipiell ändern. Nur wer Geräte bei den "üblichen Verdächtigen" wie z.B. Samsung und Archos kauft wird demnächst noch schlechtere Karten haben als bisher. Insbesondere Noname-Geräte mit Allwinner und Mediatek- Chips sind mir persönlich dahingehend bisher positiv aufgefallen. Das ist aber nur eine Daumenregel - entscheidend ist hier, was der Manufacturer macht. Leider wird der fertige Root-Zugang in der Regel nicht beworben. Es hilft also nur im Laden ganz dreist ein Terminal zu installieren und 'su' einzugeben, oftmals bringt euch das schon zu einer Root-Shell.
Woran ihr idR. nicht vorbei kommt sind die herstellerseitig ausgelieferten Betriebssytemkernel, darin liegt für mich hauptsächlich die Tragik. Ironischerweise konzentriert sich auch Cyanogenmod hauptsächlich auf den Markt der stark abgeschotteten Flaggschiffgeräte, ist auf Rockchip, Mediatek und Allwinner SoCs also oftmals auch nicht einsetzbar. Um die letztgenannten gibt es dafür aber eine kleine Debian- Community ;-)
