Hallo allerseits Zunächst vielen Dank für die Antworten und Reaktionen auf meine Mail. Das mit der mangelnden Sachkenntnis ist ganz sicher richtig. Insgesamt waren die Antworten für mich recht interessant. Kurz meine Erfahrungen, die wohl wirklich schon recht alt sind. Wenn ich früher auf meinem Linux System erst hatte ich eine DLD (deutsche Linux-Distribution), die hab’ ich gar nicht ans Laufen bekommen. Später habe ich mit SuSe-Linux herumgebastelt, was auch eine Weile ging. In der Zeit habe ich ab und an versucht Software zu installieren und da ging es mit den Paketen dann immer los, dass eine Meldung kam, dass auf meinem System schon eine ältere Version der Lib sei und ob ich die wirklich überschreiben wolle und wenn ich ja gesagt habe, kamen Meldungen, dass ich zu diesem Paket noch jenes Paket brauche, das natürlich nicht auf meinem Rechner war und erst gesucht werden musste, welches dann ein weiteres Paket erwartete, das aber mit einem schon vorhandenen Paket inkompatibel war….. Kurz: Entweder ich hatte ein Programm in der Distribution drin oder nicht, dann konnte ich es auch nicht nachbeschaffen. Jetzt habe ich ein Mint-Linux da ist das tatsächlich angenehmer. Allerdings habe ich noch immer so Sachen, dass in der Installationsanleitung kryptische Kommandozeilenbefehle angegeben werden, oder Hinweise, dass man seine Paketquellen erweitern möge (nicht ohne darauf hinzuweisen, dass das eigentlich ganz gefährlich ist). Aber ja - es geht schon leichter. Dennoch arbeite ich lieber mit meinem Mac einfach weil ich da eine Software so installiere, dass ich sie herunterlasse, das DMG doppelklicke und dann das Programm, das sich als einzelnes File darstellt (was es nicht ist - ich weiß) irgendwo auf meinen Rechner werfe. Und die Programme, die ich benutze laufen einfach und machen eben keine Zicken. Ich gebe aber zu, dass man sich da in die Welt des Bösen begibt. Wirklich wohl fühle ich mich da nicht. Daher habe ich die ganze Hobbymäßige Spielrei mit Rechnern auch ganz aufgegeben. Es macht keinen Spaß mehr. Inzwischen wird bei Anwendung weniger auf die Funktionalität geschaut als auf die Sicherheitslücken und man hat das Gefühl, dass man sich schon mit dem Einschalten des Rechners in eine Gegend begibt, die man im richtigen Leben nie betreten würde. Aber es gibt so Zwänge, die einen an den Rechner zwingen. Ich denke, das geht inzwischen vielen so, denn für mich ist das eine auch eine Erklärung dafür, dass Leute nur noch mit Tablets und Smartphones herummachen und „richtige“ Rechner meiden.
Was mich so nervt, und das war auch der Grund für mein ursprüngliches Posting, das sind jene - ich nenne es mal Nerddiskussionen - die immer wieder hochkommen und meistens einfach darin enden, dass man sich nicht einigt sondern dass es einen Fork gibt und der geneigte Benutzer mal wieder sehen kann, was denn nun besser für ihn ist. Auch wenn solche Diskussionen im Prinzip nachvollziehbar sind, habe ich doch oft das Gefühl, dass man sich mit einer gewaltigen Hingabe um „Kram“ streitet. Da ist mir manchmal so eine Monokultur einfach lieber.
Versteht mich nicht falsch. Ich bin selbst auch ein Fellow der FSFE und finde das alles wirklich wichtig und unterstütze es deswegen auch. Mir gehen nur diese technischen Diskussionen, die Lösungen oft verhindern oder komplizieren einfach nur auf die Nerven. Als nicht-Informatiker finde ich das immer wieder ermüdend und langweilig.
Jetzt ist die Mail doch ein wenig lang geworden - entschuldigt. Ich wollte das nur noch zur Klarstellung noch anfügen - nicht böse sein.

Vielen Dank für die ausführliche Antwort. Was mich aber weiterin überrascht, sind Deine Probleme mit Distributionen. Die kenne ich mit den aktuellen Versione von debian-stretch, Xubuntu (das verwenden wir in Mülheim recht erfolgreich für Einsteiger, bisher ca. 80 mal) und Kubuntu, das sogar klaglos auf meinem alten WeTab läuft und ohne Probleme aktuell zu halten ist.

Nun, das ist eine Sache die darin begründet ist, dass der moderne Mensch immer einen Schuldigen sucht wenn was schiefgeht. Und im Ubuntu-Umfeld steht eine Firma sowie ein Projekt aus Freiwilligen dahinter, die klar abgrenzen müssen wofür man verantwortlich ist und wofür nicht. Daher gibt es das Ubuntu-eigene Repository mit den Sachen die typischer Weise nichts kaputt machen und es gibt die externen Paketquellen die zwar in den meisten Fällen auch nichts kaputt machen aber wenn, dann soll man bitte nicht Canonical oder das Ubuntu-Team dafür verantwortlich machen. Ich kann das nachvollziehen. Und nervige License-Agreements beim Installieren von Software sind ja ein bekanntes Ärgernis bei proprietärer Software.

Bei freier Software hast du oft keinen "Chef", der sagt wo's langgeht und wenn du einen hast, dann muss er Leute dazu bringen freiwillig mit zu ziehen. Die Freiheiten, die nun mal aus Prinzip jedem offen stehen, begünstigen dann Forks. Und genau dafür ist die GPL erfunden worden.
Es gibt Projekte die sind "too big to fail", da stehen mehrere Vollzeit-Angestellte dahinter, die können auch mal eine unbequeme Entscheidung in Ruhe treffen ohne dass gleich ein Fork hinten raus purzelt. Prominentes aber eher einsames Beispiel ist der Linux-Kernel.
Grundsätzlich erkauft man sich die Freiheit bei Freier Software damit, dass der Anwender selbst mündig sein muss, d.h. es kann auch mal notwendig sein, sich intensiv mit einer Software und ihren Alternativen zu beschäftigen um die für sich beste Lösung zu finden.
Wobei ich auch die Meinung vertrete, die Distributionen sollten sich mehr spezialisieren. Viele Distributionen buhlen um jeden User, egal was der dann später damit machen will. So kann das nie gut gehen.

Es gibt aber innen-politisch einige Unterschiede, z.B., das was Frauenrechte angeht. In anderen Worten, die Amerikaner haben andere Prioritäten oder sind zum großenteils einig was diesem Aspekt der Politik angeht. (Anm.: Auch der radikale Sanders betritt dieser außenpolitischen Sicht!)

Gerade mit Tablets und Smartphones begibt man sich "in eine
Gegend begibt, die man im richtigen Leben nie betreten würde". Nur
dass dort der Schutz in der Regel wesentlich geringer ist, als wenn man einen „richtigen“ Rechner.
Ich habe einen Bekannten, der ist ein Aktivist für Verschlüsselung, insbesondere auch von E-Mails. Man kann ihm sicherlich auch gute Kenntnisse nicht absprechen. Dieser nutzt E-Mail-Verschlüsselung auf dem Smartphone aber nicht für eingehende Mails, weil es ihm zu unsicher ist, auf dem Smartphone seinen privaten Schlüssel zu speichern. Er schaut sich die Metadaten an und geht dann gegebenenfalls mehr oder weniger schnell an seinen Rechner, um den Inhalt zu erfahren.
Ja, er weiß, dass man mehrere Schlüssel verwenden kann. Er kann dieses Wissen aber leider nicht bei allen seinen Kommunikationspartnern als aktuelles in der Sendesituation voraussetzen.
Also kurz: Wer sich nicht mit einem Kettenhemd ins Internet traut, sollte dort erst recht nicht mit dem T-Shirt erscheinen, auch wenn audf diesem das Logo einer Kampfsportschule aufgedruckt ist.

Zunächst vielen Dank für diese ausführliche Rückmeldung. Mir ging es am Anfang mit SuSE auch so und ich wechselte genervt die Distribution, ich glaube zuerst zu Debian und dann (K)ubuntu, mit dem ich jahrelang zufrieden war. Man hat allerdings schon immer das Problem, dass neue Programmversionen oft schon nach kurzer nicht zu alten Systemen passen und deshalb Fremdprogramme mit eigenen Bibliotheken manchmal leichter in der Handhabung sind. Diese müssen dann auch nicht unbedingt "installiert" werden sondern laufen "einfach so", wie vermutlich die Mac-Programme. ...

Ich helfe mir damit, für solche Programme, die mit meinem älteren Produktivsystem nicht gehen (zur Zeit OpenSuSE, dass die früheren schwerwiegenden Paketmanagementfehler nicht mehr hat) einen Zweit-PC mit einem neueren System darauf habe.

"Hobbymässig" verwende ich nur noch Live-Systeme, die "unzerstörbar" sind, so lange man nicht anfängt, sie zu konfigurieren. Solange diese Systeme keinen Zugriff auf Produktivdaten oder -Netze haben, ist deren Verwendung gefahrlos.

Dieses Gefühl kenne ich genau so, aber die Monokultur ist eben nur scheinbar. Es auch dort zig System- und Programmversionen und zig Inkompatibilitäten. Das Tempo ist lediglich etwas langsamer und die Konflikte zwischen verschiedenen Bibliotheken (z.B. DLLs bei Windows) weniger dokumentiert als beim Linux Paketmanagement, welches gar nicht versucht, unbekannte Kombinationen zu verwenden.
Zurück zu den Paketen: immer wieder kommen "Universallösungen", die eine Weile funktionieren und dann wieder verschwinden. Hier ist wieder so eins. Bevor ich diesen "Fork" ausprobiere: kennt es jemand und ist es zu empfehlen oder eher abzuraten?:
Wenn Debian mitmacht, ist wohl aus Sicht FSFE unverdächtig?

Es hat sich für mich als praktisch herausgestellt, solche Testsysteme in einer virtualisierten Maschine aufzusetzen. Für Einsteiger ist es leider zusätzlicher Overhead, auch noch Virtualisierung zu machen, aber ganz so schwierig ist es nicht mit den grafischen Tools.
Bei der Benutzung haben einige Dinge, die den Workflow fördern, noch nicht Einzug in die gängigen Distris gehalten. Man kann sich grafisch direkt einloggen, man kann sich dafür einen zweiten Login bauen, der dann auf CTRL-ALT-F8 liegt, und man kann x2go nehmen.
Hat man diese beiden Hürden (Virtualisierung mit grafischem Login ohne VNC Geraffel) genommen, wird das Arbeiten und Ausprobieren wesentlich entspannter. Dann braucht man gerade als Einsteiger keine Angst mehr zu haben, etwas kaputt zu machen. Man kann die virtuelle Maschine löschen und neu aufsetzen. Man kann sogar, soweit das notwendig ist, ein altes Windows in die VM installieren. Das erspart hin- und her zu booten.
In der Kombination mit Pulseaudio (möglicherweise auch ohne) kann x2go sogar den Remote Sound auf der lokalen echten Hardware abspielen. Das funktioniert sogar mit einem SIP Client (Linphone) in der VM via x2go.
Möglicherweise eröffnet das eine Strategie, Einsteigern zu helfen. Man führt sie zu einem Grundsystem mit Virtualisierung und GUI Login, dann können sie in einer VM selber Dinge ausprobieren.
