Alles was es bei RWE gibt, gibt es billiger bei http://www.elv.de/hausautomations-systeme.html sagte mir ein Kollege, der sich damit beschäftigt hat. Das ganze ist eine riesige Vera****e.

RWE smarthome ist afaik nur ein KNX/EIB wie es sehr viele Hersteller haben. Wirklich frei ist es nirgends, wenn auch standardisiert.
KNX/EIB gibt es schon lange und ist imo einfach komplett überteuert.
Ich mach derzeit meine Bakk.arbeit in dem Bereich (Schwerpunkt aber auf echte freie [Web-]Standards). Zukunftspotential sehe ich in IPv6/6LoWPAN Geräten und dem CoAP-Protokoll. Wird aktuell von der ietf (http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-core-coap-08) entwickelt ist aber schon relativ weit und es haben bereits einige Hersteller Interesse bekundet bzw angekündigt das es Produkte geben wird.
Ich weiß mmt nicht ob es für openhab schon eine Anbindung gibt, wird es aber sicher recht bald geben.
Um jetzt noch Werbung einfließen zu lassen: http://www.osdomotics.com/ (Ein Verein aus Wien der aktuell viele Akteure und Sensoren für 6LoWPAN[Funk] entwickelt)

Zu dem Thema auch interessant:
Der Server ist Freie Software und für die Technologie auf dem Draht gibt es auch Hoffnung als offener Standard. Zumindest arbeite ich darauf hin. ;)

Das ist doch das System, wo die Daten im Spannungsnulldurchgang durch das Vorhandensein einer Verbindung von L nach N dargestellt werden. Schade nur das das patentiert ist - da hilft auch freie Software nicht weiter.

Hardwarepatente gibt es auf viele Dinge auf denen Freie Software läuft.
In diesem spezifischen Bereich wäre mir auch kein System bekannt welches völlig frei und zu Hause herstellbar ist. Das fängt sicher damit an dass nur wenige Menschen an Bausteinen herumexperimentieren die die Netzspannung tragen.
Es besteht in diesem Fall jedenfalls Interesse das System weiter zu öffnen.
Beim Server wurde von Anfang an auf Freie Software gesetzt. Da der Server ist wo alle Daten und alle Steuersignale zusammenkommen finde ich das in Bezug auf die Selbstbestimmung schonmal zentral.
Ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung, denke ich, wenn auch noch nicht perfekt.
Wobei ich eher "nach oben" (also Richtung weiterer Dienste & Vernetzung) denn "nach unten" (Bauweise eines Netzbausteins) viel Potential sehe, mehr Nutzen zu schaffen und dabei die Freiheit zu schützen.
Aber natürlich hast Du mit Deinem Hintergrund auch Interesse an den tieferen Schichten und ich stimme mit Dir überein dass im besten Fall auch die Herstellung von Geräten und Bauteilen für alle Menschen zu bewerkstelligen wäre.
Aber wie Du ja weisst war ich schon immer lieber dabei, Menschen zu begleiten wenn sie anfangen das Richtige zu tun und sich in die richtige Richtung bewegen als sie zu verdammen weil sie noch nicht den Zustand ultimativer Transzendenz erreicht haben. ;)
Mir ist jedenfalls kein System bekannt welches mehr Softwarefreiheit bietet.
Wenn Du eines kennst wäre ich für Hinweise dankbar.

RWE SmartHome ist eine HomeMatic-Anlage des eigentlichen Herstellers ELV, die teuer ist, aber gut aussieht. Insbesondere die Integration in Unterputzschalter ist gut und die Heizkörperthermostate sehen klasse aus, was man von den sonstigen ELV-Produkte leider nicht unbedingt sagen kann.
HM ist nicht sicher, da iirc die Sicherheit darin besteht, einen oder mehrere sog. Haus-Codes zu nutzen, bestehend aus 8 Stellen, wobei jede Stelle aus den Ziffern 1-4 bestehen kann. Das ergibt eine Schlüssellänge von 32 Bit. Aber wie sicher muss Hausautomatisierung sein? YMMV.
Es wurden ja schon ein paar freie Produkte genannt, FHEM ist ein weiteres: http://fhem.de/
Busware.de vertreibt FHEM auf Mini-Hardware mit Debian, damit sparst Du Dir die teure Zentrale. Um (teure) HM-Produkte kommst Du mit FHEM oder vergleichbarem auch herum, denn oft brauchst Du nicht den Vorteil von HM, dass das Device Rückmeldungen sendet, ob das Signal angekommen ist, etwa bei einem Lichtschalter: Licht an - seh ich; seh' ich nix, nochmal drücken. Da reicht dann auch das FS20-System, was leider aber auch den Nachteil der geringeren Bandbreite hat und somit weniger Geräte pro Stunde steuern kann. Für die Privatwohnung wird's aber reichen.
