Liebe Listige,
ich habe mir vor Jahren den ersten EcoTank-Drucker L355 [1] von Epson gekauft.
Das Konzept "teurer Drucker, billige Tinte" ging über viele Jahre gut, neulich zeigte der LED-Fehlercode jedoch, dass das "Waste Ink Pad" voll sei. Dieses habe ich mittlerweile gewechselt, doch braucht es nun laut meinen Recherchen einen Reset des "Waste Ink Counters" (WIC), bei dem ich entweder nur proprietäre Software auf dubiosen Seiten finde (selten für Linux, dann aber auch nur proprietär) oder aber Tastenkombinationen [2], die nicht funktionieren. Es gibt zwar ein FLOSS-Tool namens "reink" [3], das unterstützt jedoch nicht den L355 und da das Projekt 5 Jahre alt ist gehe ich nicht davon aus, dass es sich hier noch lohnt, das Report-Prozedere [4] abzuhandeln.
Hat jemand dazu eine Idee oder hilft hier nur der leidige Weg, in einer Windows-VM eines der dubiosen Tools zu installieren, um den "Waste Ink Counter" zurückzusetzen?

die Anfrage war trotzdem richtig, schließlich solltest Du den Unternehmen eine Chance geben. (Für Anbieter ist das ein Problem, gute technische Nachbetreuung kostet viel Geld, die Kunden schauen beim Kauf aber eher auf den Preis. Insofern sind wir "Kunden" tatsächlich ein wenig mit verantwortlich dafür, dass die Situation so ist, wie sie ist. Dass Du vorher auf das Konzept des Druckers geschaut hast, ist ein guter kleiner Schritt. ;))

Eine Anfrage kann auch hier nicht schaden. Ja, ich würde mich auch nicht viel Arbeit damit machen, habe es aber schon erlebt, das Freie Software Produkte auch nach langer Zeit wieder aufwachen. In den Pull-Requests sind ja schon ein paar mehr Drucker drin, wie https://github.com/ffff135/reink
Bei kleinen FS-Initiativen finde ich kleine Anfragen gut, weil die oft willkommen sind und zeigen, dass sich Leute für die Produkte interessieren.

Du könntest auf Englisch versuchen mehr Leute zu fragen. Vermutlich wird ein Windows-VM die schnelleste, pragmatische Lösung sein und die gesparte Zeit kannst Du dann in andere Freie Software Themen oder Produkte stecken.

...der mich allerdings nun ärgert. Der EcoPrint-Drucker war damals nicht billig, funktional unterirdisch (kein Duplex, kein Display, kein Netzwerkanschluss) und ich wäre wohl mit einem Standard-Drucker mit mehr Funktionen und Drittanbieter-Tinte auch über die Jahre billiger (und mit mehr Funktionen auch komfortabler) weggekommen. Ich wollte dieses Konzept belohnen und werde nun mit so einer Schikane abgestraft. Wirklich ärgerlich.

Das Kompilieren war dann doch nicht so schwierig, daher habe ich die Informationen zum L355 per Issue vermerkt. Allerdings glaube ich nicht, dass der Dev noch aktiv ist, dafür sind seit Jahren ähnliche Anfragen viel zu lange unbeantwortet.

das kann ich nachvollziehen, so was ärgert mich auch, selbst, wenn ich weiß, das der Versuch richtig war. Mir hilft dann manchmal, mir vor Augen zu führen, dass meine Aktion ein Testlauf war und ich an Erfahrung gewonnen habe, bezüglich des Herstellers, was ich aushalten mag und was nicht.
Das Problem mit solchen Innovationen (wie ich oft im Umweltbereich gesehen habe), ist ein Henne-Ei-Problem: 1. Wenig kaufen, 2. also ist wenig Budget vorhanden, 3. also ist das Produkt nicht ganz so gut 4. weniger Leute kaufen -> 1.
Diese Spirale kann an jedem Punkt unterbrochen und umgekehrt werden und viele Unternehmen unternehmem oft bei 2./3. mal einen Versuch und schauen dann auf 4. (Natürlich gibt es auch blöde Anbieter, die versuchen das Budget bei vielen Käufen dann in die eigene Tasche zu stecken, aber das ist vorher schwer zu ahnen.) Ich setzt dann gern bei 4. an und kaufe auch mal ein Produkt, was nicht ganz so alltäglich ist und ja manchmal bleiben dann Anbieter da und machen eine weitere Runde. (Planet-Computing, Jolla und Pine64, Fairphone sind Beispiele für weitere, verbesserte Runden.)
Und manchmal ist es auch enttäuschend (ich hatte mal ein Mobiltelefon mit Intelprozessor), aber wenn sich keiner traut, dann wird es auch für die "guten" Anbieter nicht funktionieren.

Kann sein, aber Du weißt ja: Wenn die Informationen veröffentlicht sind, dann kann sie jemand finden, sonst nicht. Und in seltenen Fällen steht eine Freie Software-Initiative plötzlich wieder auf. (Mini-Beispiel: Bei diesem Pull-Request von mir dauerte es 5 Jahre und plötzlich war wieder Bewegung da https://github.com/matrixise/dsmtpd/pull/4)
