Herzlich willkommen zum Oktober-Newsletter der FSFE. Diesen Monat waren Fragen der Interoperabilität, nachhaltigen ICT und Freien Software in der Bildung Schwerpunktthemen. Des Weiteren gab es Veränderungen innerhalb der FSFE: Das Fellowship überdenkt seine Infrastruktur, und Langzeitprojekte wie das europäische juristische Netzwerk sowie das europäische technische Netzwerk der FTF sind weiter gewachsen. In der Tat aufregende Zeiten!

1. Zehnjährige Schlacht zwischen Europäischer Kommission und Microsoft vorüber
Die Europäische Kommission und Microsoft sind darin übereingekommen, dass Microsoft letztendlich die Auflagen, welche die Kommission 2004 gegen den Konzern aus Seattle erlassen hatte, nun erfüllt hat. Die Kommission hatte damals entschieden, dass Microsoft durch die unterlassene Bereitstellung von Informationen zur Interoperabilität seiner Produkte den Markt verzerre. Microsoft legte daraufhin Berufung gegen das Urteil der Kommission ein und verlor vor dem Europäischen Gericht erster Instanz. Ein Teil der Entscheidung erfordert für Interoperabilitätsinformationen und damit zusammenhängende Patente nachvollziehbare, nicht diskriminierende Bedingungen. Ein Grund dafür war das Ziel, Projekten wie Samba einen Zugang zu dieser Information zu ermöglichen, und unsere juristischen Experten prüfen momentan ob die vereinbarten Bedingungen diesen Erfordernissen genügen. Es ist jedenfalls sicher, dass Microsoft nicht Berufung gegen die Entscheidung des Gerichts erster Instanz einlegen wird, welche nun endgültig ist. Für aktuelle Informationen besuchen Sie bitte:
2. FSFE bei Informationsveranstaltung über Freie Software in österreichischer Schule
Wie bereits in einem früheren Newsletter berichtet ist das "Bundesgymnasium Rechte Kremszeile" auf Freie Software umgestiegen. Kürzlich organisierte die Schule eine Informationsveranstaltung über ihre Erfahrungen mit der Umstellung. Drei Redner der FSFE und der Fellowship-Gruppe Wien waren eingeladen, um über die grundlegenden Konzepte freier Software zu sprechen. Zahlreiche Lehrer und Entscheidungsträger anderer Schulen besuchten die Veranstaltung und zeigten an der Einführung freier Lösungen an ihren eigenen Schulen Interesse.

3. Deutscher stellvertretender Koordinator der FSFE spricht über nachhaltige ICT in Berlin
Der stellvertretende Deutschland-Koordinator der FSFE Matthias Kirschner nahm an einer Podiumsdiskussion der Sustainbale-IT-Konferenz am 18. Oktober teil. Das Thema war "Nachhaltigkeit von Software -- International. Wie kann Software zum Ressourcenschutz und einer gerechten Verteilung von Wissen beitragen?".
4. Sun spendet T1000 Server an die FSFE
Sun hat einen T1000 Server an das Fellowship der FSFE gespendet. Simon Phipps, Chief Open Source Officer, Sun Microsystems, Inc., erklärte: "Die Arbeit der Free Software Foundation Europe ist wichtig für uns alle. Sun fühlt sich geehrt, einen SunFire(TM) T1000 Server, welcher auf dem GPL-lizenziertem OpenSPARC(TM) Chip basiert, zur Unterstützung der Fellowship-Webseite gespendet zu haben." Dank der neuen Hardware kann die FSFE die Webpräsenz des Fellowships neu ausrichten und neue Dienste für unsere Unterstützer anbieten.

5. Fellows planen die Zukunft des Fellowship-Portals
Die Fellows der FSFE beraten über die Zukunft des Fellowship-Portals. Seit 2005 bietet das Portal fsfe.org den Fellows Möglichkeiten der Kommunikation und Zusammenarbeit. Die jetzige Diskussion dreht sich um die Frage, welche Dienste für die Fellows heute am wichtigsten sind und was für Hilfsmittel in Zukunft nützlich wären. Diskutiert wird die Benutzung von Foren, Kalendern, Mailinglisten und anderer Dienste. Durch Eintragung in die Liste können Sie Ihre Meinung beitragen:

6. Europäische juristische und technische Netzwerke der FSFE wachsen
Die Freedom Task Force der FSFE beschäftigte sich mit dem Aufbau paneuropäischer juristischer und technischer Netzwerke. Durch Kontakte zwischen Fachleuten und Forschern auf dem Kontinent soll die rechtliche Basis Freier Software gestärkt werden. Zu den Netzwerken gehören mittlerweile 45 juristische und 25 technische Spezialisten mit Kontakten in Kanada, den USA, Singapur und Taiwan. Weitere Informationen unter:

7. Treffen in Brüssel und Bewusstsein für Freie Software
Ciaran O'Riordan hatte in Brüssel viel zu tun. Neben den üblichen Treffen bezüglich des ODF war O'Riordan in Helsinki und Florenz, um über die GPLv3 zu sprechen und schreibt darüber in seinem Blog.

Am 8. November werden die FSFE und ihre Freedom Task Force (FTF) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Internet Academy in Schweden einen Kurs zur strategischen Einführung Freier Software in Geschäftsbereiche anbieten. Der Kurs wird in Stockholm, Schweden, stattfinden und hauptsächlich in schwedischer Sprache abgehalten.
