im März halte ich beim den Chemnitzer Linuxtagen den Vortrag "Freie-Software-Missverständnisse gekonnt aufklären". Dabei sollen die Mißverständnisse jeweils in ~2 Minuten aufgeklärt werden. Ich würde gerne von Euch wissen, welche Mißverständnisse zu Freier Software Euch oft begegnen.

Ich habe verschiedentlich die Auffassung gehört, daß Freie Software Lizenz freie Software sei, also unter keiner Lizenz stünde, weshalb man sie kostenfrei nutzen könne.

Stimme ich voll und ganz zu, mit Manpages und anderer englisch- sprachiger Doku hatte ich anfangs auch ziemliche Probleme. Und dabei hatte ich nichmal das Problem, daß mein Schulenglisch Jahre oder gar Jahrzehnte Zeit zum Einrosten hatte.
Das ist halt schon Fachjargon. Nicht umsonst haben Fachinformatiker in der Berufsschule nochmal Englischunterricht.
Und wer von Euch hat in der Schule gelernt, was "cauliflower" oder "Brussels sprout" heißt*? ;)
Wenn man den Leuten dann zwei Wörterbücher, techn. Englisch <-> Deutsch und Informatikerdeutsch <-> Deutsch, mitgeben müsste… :/

Machen wir doch einen Punkt daraus:
* Freie Software ist nur etwas für junge, technikaffine Leute, die Englisch können.
Noch ein Punkt:
* Software ist nur dann frei, wenn sie unter der (L)GPL verbreitet wird.
Und noch ein ganz fieser ;-) :
* GPL und CDDL sind kompatibel.
(Jüngst wieder im Heise-Forum von einem bekannten "Lizenz-Experten" vorgetragen.)

ich hätte noch folgende Missverständnisse anzubieten:
- Ich kann Freie Software nicht nutzen, weil sie schlechter ist als unfreie Software (anders formuliert: Freie Software X hat Feature Y nicht.)
- Freie Software wird in der Schule/der freien Wirtschaft nicht verwendet, deswegen sollte ich lieber mit anderer Software arbeiten um gut vorbereitet zu sein.
Sind vielleicht eher Irrtümer allgemein anstatt echte Missverständnisse, aber vielleicht passt es ja trotzdem in deinen Vortrag.

WYSIWYG - wie soll das bei Webseiten gehen?
Jede Webseite sieht im lynx ganz anders aus als im Firefox (außer Fefes Blog ;-) ).

gatling wollte auf meinem Rechner einfach nicht kompilieren. Meine C Kenntnisse reichen wohl nicht aus. Ansonsten würde ich den Webserver vielleicht auch einsetzen. :)

Ich halte die Erwiderung für inkorrekt, denn die meisten Mobiltelefone mit freier Software gehören zu der Menge der Computer mit unfreien Systemen, da sie auch proprietäre Software enthalten.

Der zweite Teil hier ist denke ich klar, denn da wird unnötig verallgemeinert, aber auch sonst würde ich dem widersprechen wollen, weil es oft fraglich ist, ob man Feature X überhaupt braucht und selbst wenn, ist die Freiheit vielleicht wichtiger als ein Feature.

Bei der Schule ging es mir eigentlich um Desktops bzw. Notebooks, weil die dort ja häufig im Unterricht verwendet werden bzw. weil man sich gegen Freie Software sträubt mit der Begründung, das wäre auch für künftige Arbeitgeber eine unnütze Fähigkeit, weil ja überall nur unfreie Software eingesetzt würde. Als Erwiderung hab ich in verschiedene Richtungen gedacht. Erstens unterstützt Freie Software das Lernen, weil man rausfinden kann wie sie funktioniert. Dadurch ist man eher in der Lage jedes beliebige andere Programm zu beherrschen, weil man etwas auf einer abstrakteren Ebene gelernt hat (wie das in der Schule auch sein sollte). Die andere Argumentation ist, dass wir am besten in der Schule anfangen, die Freiheit zu verteidigen, damit wir nicht in dem Teufelskreis bleiben, dass die Wirtschaft das nutzt, was jeder schon kennt und die Schule das zeigt, was die Wirtschaft "braucht". Wir müssen das durchbrechen um unsere Freiheit zu sichern.

Mit Freier Software hat man dieses Problem ja grundsätzlich gelöst. Finanzielle Gründe, die die Schulen daran hindern z.B. die neuste Version von Libreoffice zu nutzen, gibt es ja (auch für die Schüler daheim) nicht. Höchstens organisatorische oder pädagogische.
Überdies ist die Anschaffung neuerer Sachen in den Schulen ein sehr langwieriges, vielfach mehrjähriges Verfahren.
Das dann dennoch zur Vergeudung von Mitteln führt.

Ich weiß noch, was das für ein Trara gab, als an meiner Schule Windows XP durch Windows 7 ersetzt wurde. Erst wollten nur wenige XP hergeben, dann wurde auf Windows bestanden. Wegen der Ressourcenverschwendung von Windows mussten dann 30 neue Laptops sowie ein neuer Server gekauft werden, außerdem bekamen 25 Tower neuen RAM. Trotzdem brauchen die Rechner insbesondere für Hochfahren viel länger als vorher. Glücklicherweise würde durch andere Lehrer darauf gedrängt, die alte Hardware zu behalten, damit man die alten Laptops noch für Recherchen benutzen kann. Für Vorführungen, dass man mit DebianEdu und Edubuntu auch arbeiten kann, eignen sie sich praktischerweise auch.

Genau. Es soll halt der Eindruck ausgeräumt werden, dass ein Featurelisten-Vergleich sinnvoll ist, weil das oft ohnehin nur Marketing-Gedöns ist. Außerdem hängt da noch das Missverständnis mit dran, dass Freie Software generell weniger Features hätte und weniger benutzbar ist.

Sehe ich auch so. Evtl. kann man es auf diese Bereiche beschränken. Dann wird das aber eher so etwas wie "Dinestags und Donnerstags außer an gerade Tagen".
Aber: Missverständnis könnte sein, dass an der Schule konkrete Programme gelernt werden müssen, weil sie in der Wirtschaft gebraucht werden. Anstatt sollten Konzepte beigebracht werden. (Deckt sich ja irgendwie ganz gut mit einer Forderung von uns sowieso).
Beispiel: Ich habe auf Works 2.0 damals gelernt, wie Tabulatoren funktionieren. Nie mehr danach Works genutzt (obwohl das zu dem Zeitpunkt als ich es gelernt habe noch Standard war in einigen Bereichen war) und das Konzept dennoch noch im Kopf.

Für die Vorbereitung auf den Beruf gibt es die Berufsausbildung, die die Arbeitgeber sich ja möglichst ersparen wollen, und die Betriebliche Weiterbildung.

Gute Argumente. Wobei ich denke, dass man die zwei Punkte auch nicht vermischen darf.
Der erste Schritt ist, dass Schule keine Produktschulung machen sollte. Die Schule soll Konzepte, Ideen, Denkmuster, etc. vermitteln. Man lernt im Mathe Unterricht ja auch nicht die Bedienung der gängigen Mathe Software aus der Industrie sondern Mathematik im allgemeinen. Diese allgemeine Bildung kann man grundsätzlich mit proprietäre Software oder Freie Software vermitteln. Mit dem kleinen Vorteil von Freier Software, dass man da auch direkt an der Software lernen kann. Wie ist sie aufgebaut, wie kann ich sie verändern, etc. Welcher aber, je nachdem wie man den Unterricht am und mit dem Computer definiert, noch kein ausschlaggebender Vorteil sein muss.
Wenn das klar ist, dass es in der Schule nicht um Produktschulung geht sondern um allgemeine Bildung, dann kommt der nächste Schritt: Man muss beim Einsatz der Software keine Rücksicht auf die Industrie oder den späteren Werdegang der Schüler nehmen. Stattdessen kann man die Software einsetzen die zum allgemeinen Bildungsauftrag am besten passt. Das ist ganz klar Freie Software, aus den vielen guten Gründen die hier schon genannt wurden und dich ich nicht wiederholen will.

Der Einsatz von Freier Software in der Schule ist deswegen notwendig, weil der Bildungsauftrag und die Erziehung zur Mündigkeit mit Freier Software am wirksamsten zu erfüllen ist. Hinzu kommen noch die wesentlichen sozialen Aspekte, wie z.B. keine Ausgrenzung durch Kosten. Schüler, die im Bereich der Informationstechnik gebildet worden sind, werden in der Lage sein, sich in beliebige Software zügig einzuarbeiten. Das müssen sie im Verlauf ihrer Berufstätigkeit immer wieder machen müssen.
Gute Argumente. Wobei ich denke, dass man die zwei Punkte auch nicht vermischen darf.
Der erste Schritt ist, dass Schule keine Produktschulung machen sollte. Die Schule soll Konzepte, Ideen, Denkmuster, etc. vermitteln. Man lernt im Mathe Unterricht ja auch nicht die Bedienung der gängigen Mathe Software aus der Industrie sondern Mathematik im allgemeinen. Diese allgemeine Bildung kann man grundsätzlich mit proprietäre Software oder Freie Software vermitteln.
Aber eben nur grundsätzlich. Z.B. wenn man in der Lage ist, beim Einsatz proprietärer Software die sozialen Hürden zu beheben. Nur dann können die Schüler die Software auch daheim verwenden und nach dem Ende der Schulzeit weiter nutzen. Mit Freier Software kann zudem ich ohne Probleme z.B. Textverarbeitungen vergleichen: Wie ist das bei Openoffice gelöst, wie bei Libreoffice, wie bei KWord, wie bei Abiword. Ich kann ganze GUIs vergleichen und daran Urteilskraft entwickeln: Wie ist das bei KDE gelöst, wie bei Gnome, wie bei ... Der Vergleich von Windows und Mac OS dagegen scheitert schon an den Finanzen. Es spricht auch nichts dagegen, die Schule mit Software auszustatten, die von Kind gerecht bis zu Ansprüchen eines Leistungskurses oder Ansprüchen der beruflichen Bildung reicht.
Mit dem kleinen Vorteil von Freier Software, dass man da auch direkt an der Software lernen kann. Wie ist sie aufgebaut, wie kann ich sie verändern, etc. Welcher aber, je nachdem wie man den Unterricht am und mit dem Computer definiert, noch kein ausschlaggebender Vorteil sein muss.
Es ist aber ein Vorteil. Er eröffnet den Schülern zudem die Möglichkeit, selbständig beliebig in die Tiefe zu gehen. Mich erstaunt es immer wieder, was motivierte Schüler da leisten können.
Wenn das klar ist, dass es in der Schule nicht um Produktschulung geht sondern um allgemeine Bildung, dann kommt der nächste Schritt: Man muss beim Einsatz der Software keine Rücksicht auf die Industrie oder den späteren Werdegang der Schüler nehmen. Stattdessen kann man die Software einsetzen die zum allgemeinen Bildungsauftrag am besten passt. Das ist ganz klar Freie Software, aus den vielen guten Gründen die hier schon genannt wurden und dich ich nicht wiederholen will.

Was wahrscheinlich das Schlimme ist: Sie glauben zum Teil, dass sie wirklich damit etwas gutes tun. Gerade im letzten Fall kann ich es mir gut vorstellen, dass da "das ist odch gut für die Kinder" im Kopf rumschwirrt. Genau an dem Punkt sehe ich auch unsere Aufgabe. Nicht wild Angst machen, sondern halt wie schon gehabt auf die Probleme hinweisen und Alternativen aufzeigen.

Was wahrscheinlich das Schlimme ist: Sie glauben zum Teil, dass sie wirklich damit etwas gutes tun. ja, das Problem habe auch auch schon häufiger festgestellt. Im Moment steht auch eine Übergangslösung mit freier Software im Raum, bis dann endlich das proprietäre Produkt von Microsoft eingeführt werden kann. Das die Lösung von Microsoft kommen wird steht schon fest, die Frage ist nur wie viele Monate das noch dauern wird. Das finde ich Schade.
Auch heute gelesen habe ich das die Beschützerbox[1] den vielen Freifunk Gruppen einige "Kunden" und damit auch User abgreift. Vorteil bei der Box gegenüber Freifunk ist der Angebotene Support im Fehlerfall. Freifunk kann dies durch seine vielen Splittergruppen nur schwer leisten. Ich erlebe dies live, da ich genau zwischen zwei Freifunk-Gruppen meinen Wohnsitz habe und somit sowohl auf der einen als auch auf der anderen Seite Mitschauen kann.

“In Search of Excellence”? Es waren einige Firmen darunter, die heute als »IT« gelten würden.

In der Tat nehmen die meisten Projekte nicht jede Codespende entgegen. Aber die Ablehnung einer Codespende im Einzelfall ist meist durchaus gut begründet.

Aber da würde ich gerne einmal historische Beispiele analysieren. Klar kenne ich eins, wo zu einer copyleftlosen Lizenz "umlizenziert" wurde, aber auch da gibt es ein paar Besonderheiten zu würdigen.
Zur These: "Die Entwicklung Freier Software ist transparent."
Die Frage ist aber auch: Für wen ist die Entwicklung Freier Software transparent und was bedeutet Transparenz?
Zunächst einmal ist die Entwicklung Freier Software für Außenstehende sehr transparent, denn sie können meist jeden einzelnen Entwicklungsschritt, bis hin zu jedem Commit verfolgen.
Das bedeutet natürlich nicht, dass die Entwickler auch jede Codezeile "anfängerfreundlich" kommentieren.
Transparenz gegenüber den Entwicklern bedeutet auch nicht gleichzeitig eine Entwicklerdemokratie. Es gibt da als Modell der Projektleitung auch die Figur des "wohlwollenden Diktators".
Ein Projekt andererseits, welches nicht hinreichend transparent macht (oder machen kann), was es von seinen Committern erwartet, dürfte in ernste Schwierigkeiten geraten.

Früher hatte ich in einem ähnlichen Vortrag ("XY Mißverständnisse zu Freier Software") noch:
- Wer Freie Software verändert muss die Änderungen wieder allen verfügbar machen
- Die GPL funktioniert nur in den USA
- Freie Software, Open Source, FOSS, FLOSS bezeichnet unterschiedliche Software
- Ich muss mein Urheberrecht aufgeben und an die FSF abtreten
- Linus Torvalds hat 1992 Freie Software erfunden
mit drin.
Hab ich was vergessen? Habe ich Mißverständnisse aufgeführt, die ihr schon sehr lange nicht mehr gehört habt?

- Freie Cliparts/Bilder/Filme/....
Musik! Zum Beispiel jamendo.com und cchits.net. Bietet auch gleich Beispiele für Arten der Lizenzierung.
- Freie Dokumentation (howto/manpages/...)
nur so als Hinweis, man versteift sich gerne auf Software aber das ganze ist natürliche ein Biotop.

Dazu noch eine Anmerkung: Was hier leider auch immer wieder von Verfechtern Freier Software falsch gemacht wird, ist, dass "kommerziell" als gegensatz zu "frei" verwendet wird. Das passt ganz gut zu diesem Punkt, denke ich.
