Hi, hab gerade die Mail bekommen, dass das Greenphone, das N800 und die WLAN-Router nun doch keine Preise mehr sind. Soweit ist das auch ok und ich verstehe auch, warum die FSFE mit unfreier Software beladene Geräte nicht verschenkt (RMS hätte wohl ein Schild gemalt: "Nokia, Trolltech, Netgear: Enemies of your freedom!" ;) )
Also ich habe selber so ein Nokia 770 Gerät und würde mir nichts sehnlicher wünschen als es von proprietärer Software zu befreien (also mich selbst dann). Leider sehe ich kaum Möglichkeiten Nokia klar zu machen, dass es total blöd ist einen halb-offenen/-freien PDA zu verkaufen und das es absolut schick wäre die Spezifikation und sonstige Dokus dafür rauszurücken.
Ein großes Beispiel sollten sich diese Firmen an FIC bzw. dem OpenMoko Projekt nehmen. Dort gibt es Gerätespeks vorab, Community wird eingebunden usw. Hurra! Am Ende werden alle sehen, welche kleinen "Wunder" freie Software bringen kann.
Es steht zB zur Debatte, dass das OpenMoko-Telefon (Neo1973) in der endgültigen Fassung (vorr. ab September 07 zu haben) WLAN enthalten wird. Wir hier vom Berliner Freifunk Projekt (aka OLSR Experiment) freuen uns schon darauf, das neue Routingprotokoll B.A.T.M.A.N. (Artikel darüber gibts in der englischspr. Wikipedia) darauf laufen zu lassen. Wenn das erwartungsgemäß funktioniert, gäbe es das welterste meshende Mobiltelefon. Es wäre sehr sehr leicht zu erläutern wieso sich so etwas nur mit freier Software umsetzen ließe (Es gibt wohl schon Handys mit WLAN, aber können die Ad-Hoc Modus, können die einen Mesh-Routingdaemon laufen lassen? Wieso wohl nicht? Wer könnte denn etwas dagegen haben?)
Eine andere Idee ist, den im Neo 1973 enthaltenen AGPS-Empfänger zu nutzen, um GPS-Trails zu sammeln mit denen sich Kartendaten für OpenStreetmap erzeugen ließen (Hey Bernhard, eine Karte der ganzen Welt unter CC-BY-SA, fetzt das?)
So und nun mein Vorschlag: Fragt bei Trolltech/Nokia/Netgear nach, ob sie gerne die Speks für ihre Geräte rausrücken oder schickt ihnen ihre D12nke* zurück und verlost stattdessen ein paar Neos.

naja, der Plan war eigentlich immer, dass unsere verantwortungsvollen Gefährten die Dinger auch befreien.

Ich bin da kein Experte, aber es ist meine Wahrnehmung, dass es gut sein kann, dass Nokia's Schritte in diese Richtung, so etwas wie OpenMoko erst möglich machen. Oft ist es so. Das wäre dann gut gewesen von Nokia, auch wenn sie selbst noch nicht ganz da waren. Es kann bei der Begeisterung für OpenMoko auch später noch sein, dass da doch wieder was Proprietäres drin sein wird. Beim Funken läßt es sich ja kaum vermeiden, was zertifiziertes zu fahren.

So was ist immer gut, wir müssen solche Erfolge ja auch kommunizieren.

Auch hier ist eine Analye gut. Trotzdem dürfen wir nicht vergessen, dass wir die Unternehmen als Partner in einer Freien Software Welt haben möchten. Das Internet beispielsweise (wenn ich mich richtig entsinne) ist auch an vielen Punkten erst durch kommerzielle Anbieter für viele erst richtig zugänglich gemacht worden. Ja, die haben auch Mist gemacht, aber eben auch gute Dinge.

Als Mitgründer von www.freegis.org und gerade Thuban 1.2.0 herausgebend habender, finde ich das prima. VMAP0 ist schon nah dran die ganze Welt zu haben, ein Kartenwiki hätte allerdings das ein oder andere Problem zu lösen.

Ich glaube dass der ursprüngliche Plan, es fähigen Hackern zu geben, um möglichst viele Schritte in Richtung Freiheit mit den Geräten zu machen in dieser speziellen Situation der bessere Weg ist.

Das bringt mich auf die Idee, das ihr die Geräte ganz von einer Art Verlosung ausnehmt. Für das N800 hielte ich

für sinnvolle Empfänger. Sie sind Kernentwickler für freie Treiber für den in den Nokias enthaltenen WLAN-Chip Prism54[0].
Der WLAN-Router wäre bei OpenWRT gut aufgehoben. Das Greenphone vielleicht bei OpenEZX oder so. Vielleicht kennt ja jemand eine Gruppe oder ein Projekt, die das Greenphone befreien wollen.
Ich schätze nur, dass die von mir genannten keine Fellows sind und deswegen nichts davon mitbekommen, dass hier gerade wichtige Hardware abgegeben werden kann.

Danke für die Hinweise, habe ich weitergeleitet, FreeWRT und OpenWRT hatten wir schon auf unserer Liste.
