ich bin gerade auf der Suche nach einem NAS (bzw. einem kleinen Server) mit (weitgehend) freier Software, das – zumindest nach der Erstinstallation – von einer Nutzerin / einem Nutzer ohne tiefgehende Computerkenntnisse nutzbar ist. D. h. Sicherheitsupdates sollten automatisch eingespielt werden und das System sollte möglichst stabil laufen. Neben der Möglichkeit zur Dateiablage sollte mindestens ein Kalenderserver enthalten sein.
Kann jemand ein solches System empfehlen? Für einen Tipp wäre ich dankbar.

Es gibt für Komplettlösung NAS nur zwei/drei Anbieter auf dem Markt. Entweder nimmt man QNAP oder Synology. Man kann auch von Western Digital sich eine Netzwerklösung holen, hier weiß ich aber nicht wie das mit Kalender und anderen Paketen aussieht. QNAP und Synology tun sich nicht viel in Preis und Leistung nach meinem Verständnis.
Ich selber habe eine Synology (mit vier Festplatten). Die Anzahl der Festplatten muss jeder für sich entscheiden. Als ich meine Synology gekauft habe, da waren Festplatten jenseits von 3TB noch ziemlich teuer und 8TB und 12TB waren noch nicht auf dem Markt.
Bei Synology kann man mit wenigen Klicks über das Package Center Pakete dazu installieren.
Also zum Beispiel auch den CardDAV Server für Kontakte: https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/packages/CardDAVServer
Auf die schnelle Konnte ich auf der Webseite von QNAP keinen Carddav Server finden. Das mag aber an der Webseite oder meinem Browser liegen.

das Paket "Calendar" für Kalender und Tasks Funktionalität. https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/packages/Calendar
Je nach Aufwand kann man sich seine eigene Domain (zum Beispiel mit DynDNS) aufschalten und gibt die Ports entsprechend im eigenen Router frei[0] oder man nutzt die QuickConnect Funktion von Synology mit einer Account Registrierung. Mit QuickConnect habe ich nicht experimentiert, aber die Registrierung auf der Webseite und Einrichtung macht den Eindruck als wäre sie ziemlich simpel.
Falls man keine Dokumente mit anderen außerhalb des eigenen LAN/WLAN verteilen möchte, dann sollte man komplett auf die Registrierung verzichten und sein Gerät nur für die Updates mit dem Internet verbinden.
Die offline Anleitungen sind gut erklärt und bieten alle nötigen Informationen für eine schnelle Einrichtung. Es gibt bei Synology auch noch eine online Anleitung, die bevorzugt genutzt wird, wenn Internet vorhanden ist. Diese wird (nach meinem Verständnis) auch aktualisiert ohne, dass ein neues Paket installiert werden muss.

Ich weiss selbst nicht, ob es fuer das, was Stefan anstrebt, freie loesungen gibt. Und ich denke, in einem netzwerk fuer freie software sollte dies immer im vordergrund stehen. Und wenn es noch keine freie loesungen gibt, dann laege die frage nahe, wie sie entstehen koennen.

Ich möchte betonen, dass ich von beiden Firmen in keiner weise Geld erhalte dafür das ich diese Namen genannt habe.
In Zukunft werde ich meine Antworten nicht mehr auf die Liste schreiben sondern diese Informationen wahrscheinlich besser direkt adressieren.
Es tut mir aufrichtig leid, das ich etwas geschrieben habe, dass nicht das Idealbild von 100% freier Software entsprochen hat. Ich gebe mir mühe, dass dies nicht mehr vorkommt.
Im übrigen ist meine Synology Hardware ein x86 Prozessor (besser wäre natürlich ein OpenPower System, das ist mir auch klar) und es gibt einige quelloffene Software.
Mit synocommunity[0] und Synology Open Source Project[1] geht Synology zumindest einen kleinen Schritt in die richtige Richtung.

@willi: Frei bedeutet nicht kostenlos. In diesem Fall kauft man Hardware. Die mitgelieferte Software lässt sich bei vielen Geräten gegen freie Distributionen austauschen.

ich kann und will auch nicht mich zeitlich synchron in eine debatte einklinken. Ich bin moderiert, was aber in wirklichkeit heisst, zensiert. Und fuer die meisten ist das auch gut so und gewollt. Was soll ich also hier. Nach 4 tagen wurden meine emails an die liste weitergegeben, nachdem ich Stefan und Torsten direkt eine email sandte.
Du sprichst euere eigene selbstbeschraenkung an. Eigentlich geht es um freie technologie. Und da ist bei datenverarbeitenden systemen sowohl die hardware als auch die software im blick.
Und selbst, wenn wir mit FPGA's (Free Programmable Gate Arrays) einen teil der hardware funktionen in die software auslagern, bleiben die materiellen grundstrukturen immer als notwendig erhalten.
Wenn ihr euch auf (freie) software konzentriert, dann heisst das, alles zu tun, dass deren funktionalitaet mit freier software realisierbar ist. Deswegen fand ich das wirklich komisch, dass hier ploetzlich closed-software im angebot erscheint.
Bei der hardware datenverarbeitender systeme sind wir ja sehr beschraenkt. Sowohl bei den materiellen strukturen als auch auf ihnen aufsetzenden architekturen. Aber das ist auch deutlich selbstgemacht.
Auf dieser ebene hatte ich meinen streit mit Richard Stallman in Caracas. Und ich vermute, dass er in den FSF-strukturen nicht alleine steht. Es gibt ja verschiedene kreise und gruppen, die diese selbstbeschraenkung zumindest in ihrer proklamation aufloesen wollen. LiberationTech, LibreCores, LibrePlanet, Risc-V u.a. Auch die hackerspaces deuten so etwas an.
In den bereichen der CN's (Community Networks) sieht es ja ganz duester aus. Also eigentlich sehr verwandt zur FSF-umgebung. Allerdings kommt hier noch der bereich der daten-uebertragung dazu.
Mir geht es hier mehr um unsere haltung. Akzeptieren wir das abschieben in nischen, zelebrieren wir unsere beschraenkung, oder versuchen wir, die selbsternannten monopole und konzentrationen zu brechen. Das entspricht dann einem weg, wo wir von den anforderungen zur realisierung kommen.
Deswegen ist dein und anderer regelmaessig entstehender hinweis zu "nicht kostenlos" natuerlich tautologie, weil wir immer etwas tun muessen, um etwas entstehen zu lassen. In den sphaeren kapitalistischer BWL (Betriebs Wirtschafts Lehre) wird das dann als kosten behandelt. Nur, ich folge nicht solchen ausgetretenen kalauern.

Frei bedeutet nicht kostenlos. Kommerzielle Software ist auch nicht das Gegenteil von Freier Software. Wohingegen Freie Software die nicht kommerziell sein darf, unfrei ist.
Wieso sollte man nicht kommerzielle Software vorschlagen? Die Anforderung besagte ja nicht: Muss Freie Software und gratis sein.

Natürlich sollen freie Lösungen auf dieser Liste im Vordergrund stehen. Auch eine Diskussion, warum es solche Lösungen evtl. noch nicht gibt, und wie man dies ändern kann gehört wohl zu den Kernthemen dieser Liste.
Thomas hat in seinem Beitrag eine (aus Sicht von Freier Software) triste Situation gezeichnet innerhalb der er eine Antwort der ursprünglichen Frage gegeben hat. Für sich allein genommen, entspricht diese Antwort wohl kaum den Grundwerten, die wir hier vertreten wollen.
Aber Thomas hat seinen Beitrag ja nicht als Absolutismus formuliert, und so einen konstruktiven Prozess ermöglicht. Ich finde es nämlich toll, wie sich aus den einzelnen Sachbeiträgen in diesem Thread ein Gesamtbild formt:
Ausgehend von "Wenn es anfängerfreundlich sein muss, kenne ich leider nur diese unfreien Produkte" kamen gute Anmerkungen, wie man mehr Freiheit erreichen kann, und inwieweit man dafür Komforteinbußen in Kauf nehmen muss.
Ich bin über alle Beiträge froh - denn (fast) jeder Beitrag hat mein Wissen erweitert.

Auf die schnelle Konnte ich auf der Webseite von QNAP keinen Carddav Server finden. Das mag aber an der Webseite oder meinem Browser liegen.

Je nach Aufwand kann man sich seine eigene Domain (zum Beispiel mit DynDNS) aufschalten und gibt die Ports entsprechend im eigenen Router frei[0] oder man nutzt die QuickConnect Funktion von Synology mit einer Account Registrierung. Mit QuickConnect habe ich nicht experimentiert, aber die Registrierung auf der Webseite und Einrichtung macht den Eindruck als wäre sie ziemlich simpel.
Falls man keine Dokumente mit anderen außerhalb des eigenen LAN/WLAN verteilen möchte, dann sollte man komplett auf die Registrierung verzichten und sein Gerät nur für die Updates mit dem Internet verbinden.
Die offline Anleitungen sind gut erklärt und bieten alle nötigen Informationen für eine schnelle Einrichtung. Es gibt bei Synology auch noch eine online Anleitung, die bevorzugt genutzt wird, wenn Internet vorhanden ist. Diese wird (nach meinem Verständnis) auch aktualisiert ohne, dass ein neues Paket installiert werden muss.

Danke für den Hinweis. Ich habe selbst seit ~1 Jahr eine FreeNAS-Box, mit der ich größtenteils recht zufrieden bin.
So komfortabel wie eine Synology ist es allerdings nicht: Man benötigt schon etwas tiefergehende Kenntnisse und/oder Durchhaltevermögen beim Lesen von Manuals, um überhaupt das RAID richtig aufzusetzen. Ich meine mich zu erinnern, dass Synology da wesentlich einsteigerfreundlicher war, aber natürlich zum Preis von Softwarefreiheit.
Über die FreeNAS-Seite lassen sich aber wohl auch vorkonfigurierte Geräte kaufen.

Die allermeisten NutzerInnen die ich kenne und die keine/kaum Computerkenntnisse haben, ändern nie wieder etwas am System, sobald sie es erhalten haben.
Computerkenntnisse nutzbar ist. D. h. Sicherheitsupdates sollten automatisch eingespielt werden und das System sollte möglichst stabil laufen. Neben der Möglichkeit zur Dateiablage sollte mindestens ein Kalenderserver enthalten sein.
Das sollte eigentlich überall der Fall sein. Die Frage wäre für mich dann eher, wie lange überhaupt Aktualisierungen Ihren Weg in das Gerät finden.
