Hallo zusammen,
ich habe gerade einen Gewissenskonflikt und wollte fragen, ob ihr manchmal ähnliche Gedanken habt.
Ich nutze beruflich grafische Diff-Tools. Bisher nutze ich vor allem Meld, aber ich kenne auch das proprietäre Beyond Compare. Es ist zwar "im Prinzip" das gleiche, aber nachdem ich mit beiden schon intensiv gearbeitet habe (Beyond Compare bei meinem ehemaligen Arbeitgeber), muss ich sagen, dass ich mit Beyond Compare ein gutes Stück besser zurechtkommt und effizienter arbeite.
Deshalb überlege ich, Beyond Compare zu nutzen. Der Preis für eine Pro-Lizenz ist mit 50$ nicht allzu hoch, verglichen mit der gefühlten Arbeitserleichterung. Ich habe aber ein schlechtes Gewissen, proprietäre Software finanziell zu unterstützen.
Wie seht ihr die Sache? An welchem Punkt nehmt ihr ruhigen Gewissens das proprietäre Produkt? Wenn es besser ist? Wenn es free-to-use ist? Wenn es keine freie Alternative gibt? Gar nicht?

Ich habe auch früher für proprietäre Software Geld ausgegeben, heute versuche ich ausschließlich freie Software zu werden, soweit dies möglich ist. Wenn proprietäre Software kostenlos angeboten wird, kann man diese für einen begrenzten Zeitraum nutzen, z.B. für Reverse Engineering oder um einen freien Ersatz für diese Software zu schreiben. So verwende ich z.B. eine kostenlose akademische Kopie von Windows 7 für ein Reverse-Engineering, wenn wine nicht nutzbar ist. Teilweise benötige ich dafür dann aber nur einige DLLs. Bei einigen unfreien Programmen wie z.B. Skype stört mich insbesondere dass die Programme kostenlos angeboten werden und Benutzer denken "Skype is free".

Vorweg: Ich nutze einige proprietäre Produkte. Aber ruhigen Gewissens? Eigentlich nie. Und das liegt nicht daran, dass ich möglicherweise die Entwickler solcher Produkte finanziell unterstütze (das würde ich bei Freier Software auch machen), sondern weil ich sonst einfach ein Stück Software auf meinem Computer habe, das 1) meinen Idealvorstellungen widerspricht und 2) eine Art "Risikofaktor" darstellt in dem Sinne, dass ich alleinig den Entwicklern der Software vertrauen muss und dass keine anderen unabhängigen Entwickler ein Auge darauf werfen können.
Zudem habe ich früher schon öfters die Erfahrung gemacht, dass proprietäre Software plötzlich von den Entwicklern aufgegeben wurde und dann nutzlos wurde, obwohl ich evtl. sogar Geld dafür ausgegeben habe.
Ähnlich wie Tobias habe ich eine virtuelle Maschine mit einem Windows-System am Laufen, v.a. aus geschäftlichen Gründen, um Software meiner Kunden zu testen, die unter Wine nicht oder nur mit Bugs lauffähig ist. Ansonsten nutze ich proprietäre Software nur, um mir deren Funktionen anzuschauen und dann einen Freie-Software-Ersatz zu finden (meist auch für Kunden oder Freunde).
Generell finde ich aber, dass das jeder Mensch für sich entscheiden kann, welche Software er auf seinen privaten Computern verwendet. Bei einigen Anwendungsfällen, wie bei Deinem, besteht ein Konflikt zwischen (ich nenne es mal) Moral/Sicherheitsbedürfnis und Zeitersparnis/Bequemlichkeit. Alles hat seine Berechtigung.

worum geht es bei Freier Software? Um die Freiheit des Nutzer.
Moralisch in die Verantwortung genommen wird der Entwickler, der um der Freiheit des Nutzers willen seine Software unter einer Lizenz verbreiten soll, die dem Nutzer bestimmte Freiheiten einräumt.
Für den Nutzer stellen sich erst einmal praktische Fragen: Kann ich beispielsweise unter Wahrung hinreichender Sicherheit meines Systems Software einsetzen, deren Quelltext studiert werden kann?
Kann ich Software einsetzen, die nicht Offene Standards implementiert? (Es gibt auch proprietäre Software, die Offene Standards implementiert.)
Letztlich ist das jeweils eine Abwägung im Einzelfall, die zwar ein Problembewusstsein erfordert, aber eher nicht moralischer Natur ist.
Moralisch wäre die Frage: Kann ich Software von Entwicklern einsetzen und diese durch meine Lizenzzahlungen unterstützen, die sich in meinen Augen unmoralisch verhalten, weil sie den Nutzer wichtige Rechte vorenthalten und diese wenn möglich in Abhängigkeitsverhältnisse zwingen wollen?
Die christliche Lehre von der Erbsünde besagt, dass der Mensch notwendigerweise von Anfang an in sündhafte Verhältnisse verstrickt ist, was er zu erkennen vermag. Wer kann schon wirklich guten Gewissens beispielsweise einen Computer nutzen, wenn er weiß (also eine Frucht vom Baum der Erkenntnis "genascht" hat), unter welchen Bedingungen und Umständen derzeit Computer hergestellt und die hierzu notwendigen Rohstoffe gewonnen werden?
Aus dem Vorstehenden folgt, dass proprietäre Software genutzt werden kann, wenn es hierfür gute Gründe gibt.
Wenn ich eine bestimmte Funktionalität brauche, es keine Freie Software gibt, die diese bietet, ich kein Entwickler und auch nicht in der Lage bin, eine entsprechende Entwicklung zu finanzieren, kann mir kein moralischer Vorwurf bei der Nutzung proprietärer Software gemacht werden, da es kein zumutbares Alternativverhalten gibt. Wenn es die Freiheit der Wahl nicht gibt, erscheint der Vorwurf einer Entscheidung gegen die Freiheit sinnlos.
Bequemlichkeit ist kein guter Grund.
Bequemlichkeit ist genau das "Feature", mit dem fast immer Leute in die vendor-lock-in-Falle gelockt werden.
Bequemlichkeit durch Kontrollverlust zu erkaufen, erscheint mir daher moralisch zweifelhaft, es sei denn, der Produktivitätsgewinn wäre so überragend hoch. dass er andere Gesichtpunkte in den Hintergrund drängt.
Also letztendlich in extremen Fällen wieder eine Abwägung im Einzelfall.
Leider lässt sich das Leben auch in moralischer Hinsicht nicht mit ein paar einfachen Regeln (beispielsweise: "Nutze keine proprietäre Software!") steuern, es sei denn, sie wären so allgemein ("Ama et fac, quod vis!"), dass ihre Anwendung im Einzelfall großer gedanklicher Anstrengungen bedarf.
