Manches in dem Artikel finde ich fragwürdig - u.a. die Beispiele zu GNOME mit Geary als Mail-Client in den Screenshots, der, soweit ich mich erinnere, nicht mal "offiziell" Teil von GNOME ist. Daß Google als Sponsor u.a. bei der FSF(E), der GNOME Foundation, KDE und einigen anderen Strukturen auftaucht, überrascht zumindest ein wenig.

es diskreditiert den ganzen Artikel, daß der Autor seinen Frust mit "geary" in diesem Zusammenhang abläßt statt in einem Supportforum um Hilfe zu bitten oder ne issue zu erstellen.
Ansonsten könnte er ja die genannten Organisationen finanzieren, dann bräuchten die das Geld von Google usw nicht.

Diese Diskussion kocht ja schon seit ein paar Tagen auf Mastodon hoch. Ich habe mich da bisher zurück gehalten, u.a weil ich glaube das man das in 500 Zeichen nur schwer diskutieren kann. Aber auch weil ich Aral als Privacy- und "Digital Rights"-Aktivist sehr schätze.
Meine Meinung ist, dass er sich hier die falschen Gegner ausgesucht hat und sich zu sehr rein steigert. Es mag sein, dass das aus seiner Perspektive Sinn macht. Aber ich glaube letztlich ist das genauso wenig sinnvoll wie wenn Freie Software Aktivisten ihn attackieren würden weil er unter anderem auch proprietäre Software einsetzt und öffentlich "bewirbt".
Am Ende kämpfen alle für mehr Freiheit und Rechte in der digitalen Welt und man sollte es akzeptieren das es verschiedene Bewegungen mit verschiedenen Schwerpunkten gibt. Ein "Privacy"-Aktivist findet positives an Apple weil sie eine Produktfirma sind und daher im Gegensatz zu Google nicht die Daten der Benutzer verwerten müssen. Als Freie Software Aktivist sieht man dagegen die positiven Beiträge von Google zu Freier Software. Aus der jeweils anderen Perspektive betrachtet sehen die Unternehmen dagegen wieder ganz anders aus. Die Welt ist eben nicht schwarz/weiß und gerade bei großen Firmen gibt es meist sehr viele unterschiedliche Strömungen.
Ich glaube wir erweisen unserer Zivilgesellschaft einen Bärendienst wenn wir mit dem Finger aufeinander zeigen. Wir sollten lieber im freundschaftlichen Dialog untereinander für mehr Bewusstsein für die jeweils anderen Aspekte werben und die wirklichen Probleme und Gegner einer freien digitalen Welt benennen. Diese sind weder ein "Privacy"- Aktivist der die eine oder andere proprietäre Software einsetzt noch der Freie Software Aktivist der die positiven Beiträge eines Unternehmens anerkennt und Spenden für seine Freie Software Initiative annimmt ohne sich dabei abhängig zu machen.

Satire ist das schon, aber leider nur teilweise. Wie Björn schon schrieb: Spätestens seit der letzten Woche ist Aral in den sozialen Netzen, allen voran Mastodon, ganz massiv zugange, Organisationen wie die FSF, die GNOME Foundation oder Mozilla (die schon bedeutend länger) im Kern als Whitewashing von "Überwachungskapitalisten" wie Google oder Microsoft und damit ablehnenswert zu bezeichnen.
In einigen Aspekten mag er ja sogar valide Punkte haben, aber zum einen bleibt er leider bessere Vorschläge für Finanzierung der Arbeit solcher Organisationen gänzlich schuldig, zum anderen halte ich die Art und Weise, wie er dies in der Öffentlichkeit tut, für ausnehmend kontraproduktiv sowohl für "seine" als auch für "unsere" Ziele, die ja durchaus nah beieinander liegen.
Insofern die Frage: Sollten die adressierten Organisationen, also auch die FSF(E), darauf irgendwie reagieren? Ich meine, offen gestanden sind die Herausforderung für Aktivisten derzeit groß genug, auch ohne dass sie sich gegenseitig zusätzlich das Leben schwer machen. So, wie die Diskussion derzeit läuft, könnte es destruktiver kaum sein...

Ich werde regelmäßig gefragt, was an Google und Apple eigentlich so schlimm ist. Dann erzähle ich etwas und auch von den Organisationen, die sich dafür einsetzen, dass sich die Situation bessert (FSF, FSFE, KDE etc.). Wenn das Thema aufkommt, dass die Logos der kritisierten Firmen groß auf den Webseiten der freien SW-Organsisationen zu sehen ist, bin etwas in Erklärungsnot bzw. in einer blöden Rechtfertigungssituation (so wie teilweise in dem Aral-Beitrag beschrieben) und hatte mich letztens tatsächlich auch selber gefragt, wie schlimm kann das sein? Ist es den Aufwand wert, sein eigenes Telefon mit Lineage zu betreiben und die sonstigen Nachteile in Kauf zu nehmen, bestimmte Apps nicht nutzen zu können?
Es ist ein Zielkonflikt zwischen Finanzierung und Vermeidung von "Free-Washing", z. B. "Wenn die FSF nur wegen der paar Euros, die über das Amazons Smile-Programm generiert werden (die dann übrigens einer anderen Organisation fehlen, weil immer nur eine ausgewählt werden kann), keine Probleme damit hat, deren Marke und das Marketing-Programm weiter bekannt zu machen, wie schlimm kann dann Amazon eigentlich sein?"
Ich habe das Gefühl, dass Transparenz hier ein guter Weg sein kann: aufzeigen, dass ein Zielkonflikt besteht, worin genau er besteht, welche Optionen es gibt und wie aktuell damit umgegangen wird. An jedem kritischen Firmen-Logo könnte ein Sternchen mit Link zu einem gut formulierten Text stehen, den man als Durchschnittsaktivist zur fundierten Erwiderung von berechtigter Kritik verwenden kann. Und auch zum Verständnis dieser komplexen Situation beitragen kann. Je mehr Fakten bekannt sind, desto besser kann der Einzelne entscheiden. Dort könnte z. B. stehen, dass nicht jede kleiner SW-Hersteller, der auch proprietäre Software produziert, das Problem ist, sondern die Machtkonzentration der Großkonzerne und dort ein differenziertes Bild zeichnen, ohne die eigenen Werte aufzuweichen.

Ich habe, wie gesagt, zu Aral keine Meinung und vermag nicht zu beurteilen, wie sehr ihm an der "Sache" gelegen ist und wie wichtig ihm eine sehr deutliche, kompromisslose mediale Selbstdarstellung ist - zumindest läßt sich mit ihm in elektronischen Kanälen sehr schlecht diskutieren, wenn man auch nur ansatzweise kritische Fragen stellt. Das halte ich insgesamt für extrem schlecht, von wegen "divide-and-conquer": Die Herausforderungen der gegenwärtigen digitalen Welt sind nicht unbeträchtlich, und die (vergleichsweise) "paar Aktivisten", die es gibt, sind noch damit beschäftigt, sich selbst nach Kräften an den Karren zu fahren, weil sie es nicht schaffen, sich halbwegs hinter gemeinsame Ziele oder zumindest Zielpriorisierung zu finden. Kann man machen. Macht aber die Dinge eher schwerer.
Ich habe das Gefühl, dass Transparenz hier ein guter Weg sein kann: aufzeigen, dass ein Zielkonflikt besteht, worin genau er besteht, welche Optionen es gibt und wie aktuell damit umgegangen wird. Aber für mich bleibt nach wie vor die kritische Frage nach der Finanzierung von SoftwareLibre. Eine sehr hässliche Diskussion dazu, die ich in den letzten Tagen auch immer wieder hatte, war:
"Google macht den Markt für unabhängige Software-Hersteller kaputt, weil sie ihre Produkte verschenken können, und finanziert darüber hinaus noch Organisationen wie die FSFE, die zwar SoftwareLibre wollen, wovon aber im Endeffekt für die Mehrzahl der Nutzer als wichtigster und offensichtlichster Vorteil auch nur bleibt, daß die Software gratis ist. Damit verlieren all jene, die es sich nicht leisten können, ihre Software zu verschenken, oder die kein Geschäftsmodell haben können, in dessen Rahmen sich Software frei entwickeln läßt."
Das ist grenzwertig und ein anderes Thema, befeuert aber konkret in dem Sponsorship-Punkt die Diskussion und ist der Kommunikation pro SoftwareLibre keinesfalls zuträglich.

Eure Diskussion war sehr interessant. Ich wurde an die christliche Maxime "Liebe deine Feinde" erinnert : die FSFE muss Google leider als Feind betrachten, darf aber nie aufhören, mit ihnen zu verhandeln und auch dankbar wenigstens schon mal einen Teil jendes "schmutzigen" Geldes zurückfließen zu lassen.
Aber du sagst es: "Aber für mich bleibt nach wie vor die kritische Frage nach der Finanzierung von SoftwareLibre." Ich glaube mittlerweile, dass wir langfristig nicht an einer fundamentalen Änderung im Autorenrecht vorbei kommen. Geistiges Gemeingut muss als solches anerkannt und verwaltet werden. Und dann geht es nicht mehr nur um freie Software, sondern auch alle anderen freien Inhalte, bis hin zu Filmen und Patenten. Und das geht nur, wenn wir als Bürger bereit sind, für die Verwaltung und Produktion geistigen Gemeinguts in Form von Steuern zu zahlen. Ich arbeite in meiner Freizeit an einem Vorschlag und suche Mitdenker. Ich hatte meine Idee auch schon früher auf dieser Liste geteilt und euer Feedback verdaut. vorweg: Ich habe kein Problem damit, wenn die FSF(E) Geld von Google oder MS annimmt, solange die Annahme und Verwendung des Geldes transparent geschieht und kein Free-Washing stattfindet oder das Geld bestimmte Entscheidungen beeinflusst.
Das gesagt, sehe ich allerdings das (philosophische) Problem, dass Freiheit (Freie und Open Source Software) Unfreiheit schafft. Z.B. mit Linux:
Android ist eine Java-Runtime auf einem Linux-Kernel, die das fleißige Sammeln von Nutzerdaten auf Geräten ermöglicht, deren Bootloader gesperrt sind und über die der User keine Kontrolle hat.
ChromeOS läuft ebenfalls auf für Nutzer gesperrte Geräte mit einem Linux-Kernel.
Ganz zu schweigen von IoT-Geräten wie Chromcast, etc. über die der Nutzer keine Kontrolle hat.
All die Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft (mit >51% Linux VMs in Azure) , XY Cloud-Anbieter Server, die ihre Nutzer überwachen und Daten sammeln, laufen unter Linux.
Das ist jetzt eine nicht weiter durchdachte These von mir, die ich zur Diskussion stellen möchte: Der Siegeszug und die Verbreitung eines freien Betriebssystems hat zu mehr Unfreiheit geführt bzw. führt immer noch dazu.
Und es wird nicht besser: Das Open-Source Betriebssystem Fuchsia von Google wird Android und ChromeOS verdrängen, so dass Fuchsia in ein paar Jahren das am meisten genutzte OS auf Smartphones sein wird und in Chrome-Books einen größeren Anteil auf dem Desktop-Markt haben wird, als es Linux-Desktops je hatten. Es werden gesperrte Geräte (locked down devices) sein, auf die der Nutzer keinen direkten Zugriff haben wird, außer über eine mehr oder weniger proprietäre Oberfläche. Fuchsia wird das MacOS/iOS von Google werden.
Ich sehe es eher so, dass FSF und FSFE sich konkret für Freie Software einsetzen sollten, die den Nutzer die Kontrolle über seine Geräte, seine Daten und seine Privatsphäre wiedergibt. Open Source hilft uns nicht weiter und führt, wie man an Fuchsia sieht, zu einer weiteren Spirale von Abhängigkeiten, da Fuchsia uns an die "Befreiung" von Geräten hindern wird. Es wird kein LineageOS für Fuchsia geben, der Open Source Fuchsia-Kernel wird von proprietären Treibern umgeben sein, ohne die moderne Smartphones nicht funktionieren werden.
Wie gesagt, etwas unausgegoren, aber das beschäftigt mich gerade, während FSFE und FSF sich darüber freuen, dass sich Microsoft immer mehr für Open Source öffnet und Google Geld an Freie Software spendet etc.: Dass der Marktanteil von Linux wächst ist für Freie Software Enthusiasten mittlerweile kein Grund mehr, sich zu freuen und zu feiern, ebenso wenig, dass Microsoft auf Open Source und Linux setzt.

- Die Abgrenzung zwischen "Software Libre" und "Open Source" ist problematisch. Damit habe ich auf einer Seite Nutzer, die "Software Libre" aus idealistischen Gründen bauen, und auf der anderen Seite im schlimmsten Fall "Open Source" - Communities, die als kostenlose, verlängerte Werkbank für proprietäre Entwicklung dienen (möglicherweise etwas überspitzt gesprochen).
- An vielen Stellen ist "Software Libre" zwar nützlich, aber geht an der Lebensrealität der Mehrzahl der Menschen völlig vorbei. Wenn ich mir anschaue, wie viele Leute mit WhatsApp, Facebook, Google, ... überhaupt erst einmal in die Lage versetzt wurden, digitale Technologie zu nutzen, dann sehe ich eine extrem große Zielgruppe, für die die Freiheiten der GPL nahezu irrelevant sind: Das sind Leute, die *nie* in Software hineinschauen, geschweige denn diese verändern werden. Das sind auch Leute, die nie selbst einen Server von irgendetwas betreiben oder sich darüber Gedanken machen wollen, ob es einen solchen braucht. Das sind Leute, die nutzen WhatsApp oder Facebook als einen Dienst, der "einfach nur" funktioniert und sie Kontakt mit Menschen halten läßt, die ihnen wichtig sind. Das bekomme ich mit Argumenten der Privatsphäre schlecht und mit Argumenten der Software-Freiheit überhaupt nicht gegriffen. Bei Facebook oder WhatsApp ist es gleich, ob die Infrastruktur auf Open-Source-Software oder Software Libre aufsetzt - für die Nutzer ändert sich nix. Was bringt es mir, die "Sources für Facebook" zu haben und nutzen zu können, wenn ich keine Nutzer darüber erreiche?
- Ähnlich: Die ganze Thematik mobiler Geräte. Ich hab viele Fragezeichen und keine wirklichen Ideen. :/

Das sind auch Leute, die nie selbst einen Server von irgendetwas betreiben oder sich darüber Gedanken machen wollen, ob es einen solchen braucht. Das sind Leute, die nutzen WhatsApp oder Facebook als einen Dienst, der "einfach nur" funktioniert und sie Kontakt mit Menschen halten läßt, die ihnen wichtig sind. Das bekomme ich mit Argumenten der Privatsphäre schlecht und mit Argumenten der Software-Freiheit überhaupt nicht gegriffen. Bei Facebook oder WhatsApp ist es gleich, ob die Infrastruktur auf Open-Source-Software oder Software Libre aufsetzt - für die Nutzer ändert sich nix. Was bringt es mir, die "Sources für Facebook" zu haben und nutzen zu können, wenn ich keine Nutzer darüber erreiche?

Mag sein. Das ist per se auch nicht schlecht, wenn man nur über "Software Libre" nachdenkt - löst aber das Problem Facebook nicht: Für Nutzer ist es im Zweifelsfall schön, eine eigene Instanz von Facebook oder was-auch-immer zu betreiben. Wenn darüber die Kontakte, mit denen kommuniziert werden soll oder muss, nicht erreichbar sind (weil Facebook nicht federated und facebook.com ein "walled garden" ist), dann ändert eine eigene Instanz daran nichts. Das Problem, das Facebook für diese Nutzer löst, ist nicht die Entwicklung und der Betrieb von Software.

Sicher ebenfalls richtig, nur: Welche Systeme mögen das sein? Schön, daß es geht, aber ich sehe etwa derzeit beispielsweise keine Smartphone-Plattform, mit der ich mir ein Gerät auf Stand gängiger Android-Devices ausschließlich mit Freier Software bauen könnte. Und die Geräte, die am Markt zu kaufen können, erlauben das Einspielen geänderter Software eben bestenfalls über krude Hacks. Auch das ist nicht die *Schuld* Freier Software, aber es ist ein reales Problem in einer Situation, in der die Freiheit der Software schön ist, aber leider nicht viel zu verbessern vermag.
Vielleicht bin ich dort in der Tat auf dem falschen Dampfer und das sind Themen, die Software Libre per se gar nicht lösen kann oder soll. Auf jeden Fall sehe ich dort Punkte, an denen die Freiheit des Codes in der sehr realen Praxis wenig Möglichkeiten mit sich bringt, tatsächlich mehr Freie Software nutzen zu können.

Ich kann dir nur zustimmen, dass dies reale Probleme von Menschen sind. Und sicher kann ein singulärer Ansatz da nicht vollends abhelfen. Aber er wirkt eben unterstützen.
Beispielhaft: * Es gibt mehrere Hersteller für Notebooks die auf Privatsphäre und/oder Kompatibilität mit freier Software achten. * Es gibt lauffähige Geräte mit einem Linux, das grundsätzlich ohne proprietäre Bestandteile auskommen kann auch im Formfaktor Smartphone. * Es gibt Geräte, die auf einen besseren ökologischen und auch sozialen Fußabdruck achten.
Das dies keine Massenprodukte sind, ist kein Gegenargument. Auch der Preis ist keines.
Irgendwo muss man anfangen. Ein freies Baseband kann mit dem Aufkommen des Librem 5 durchaus wahrscheinlicher werden. Es gibt jetzt ein Gerät in dem es genutzt werden kann. Und die potentielle Softwarebasis ist größer und leichter zugänglich als bei Android. Leider wird auch dies kein Massenprodukt; man wünschte es sich anders.
Aber wir haben die Möglichkeit in den von uns beherrschten privaten und wirtschaftlichen Prozessen ausschließlich auf Freie Software zu setzen. Es bleibt dennoch eine Frage der Abwägung gegen andere Interessen wie kompromisslos wie das tun oder den Umständen opfern.

Freie Software sollte daher wieder stärker vom Open Source-Begriff abgegrenzt werden, da beides meiner Meinung nach unterschiedliche Ziele sind.

Abgesehen davon, dass Google wohl kaum eine Antwort darauf geben wird, gibt es kaum Gründe für Google, die FSFE nicht zu unterstützen, und einige Gründe es zu tun:
- Virtue signalling gegenüber den eigenen Mitarbeitern - Google profitiert von einem starken FLOSS Markt - Google verdient sein Geld nicht vorrangig mit proprietärer Software, im Gegensatz zu einigen seiner Konkurrenten - Es ist eine (für Google) vernachlässigbare Summe Geld
Mit etwas Nachdenken würden mir eventuell noch weitere Punkte einfallen, aber der Tenor ist denke ich klar: auch ohne Einfluss auf die FSFE zu nehmen entsteht für Google kein Zielkonflikt, wenn sie Freie Software unterstützen und proprietäre Software insgesamt schwächen.

An dieser Stelle möchte ich den Hinweis geben, dass Freie Software und Open Source von den meisten (allen?) relevanten Akteuren als quasi identisch gesehen wird. Zum einen von der FSFE [^1], zum anderen auch Vertretern der OSI in vielen Vorträgen. Simon Phipps hat etwa auf mehreren Konferenzen deutlich daran erinnert, dass Open Source gezielt als Marketingkampagne für Freie Software gestartet wurde, um neue Zielgruppen anzusprechen.
Das heißt aber nicht, dass es keine Präferenzen gibt, die einzelne Personen und Organisationen haben, wenn es um die Wahl der Bezeichnung geht. FSFE und unsere Schwesterorganisationen präferieren Freie Software, um u.a. die Bedeutung der Freiheiten herauszustellen. Andere nutzen lieber Open Source, weil sie etwa das free/gratis-Missverständnis [^2] meiden möchten. Andere nehmen einfach direkt "Free and Open Source Software".
Das ist natürlich verwirrend und nicht wirklich förderlich für "unsere Marke". Umso mehr finde ich es wichtig, dass wir nicht versuchen, künstliche/kulturelle Unterschiede zu finden, sondern die entscheidenden Gemeinsamkeiten hervorheben. Das hilft allen, die Freie Software, Open Source, Libre Software und wie auch immer man die tollste Softwareart der Welt nennen mag, fördern wollen.

Warum ist es relevant, ob die Massenüberwachung mit SoftwareLibre-Komponenten durchgeführt wird oder nicht? Die Menschen, die diese Massenüberwachung kontrollieren, sind die Haupt-Verantwortlichen. Sie könnten dafür auch proprietäre Software nutzen.
Andersherum geht es auch: Ich habe letztes Jahr einen Vortrag gehört, der heraustellte wie toll mit SoftwareLibre ein Hilfsprojekt für unterdrückte Menschen durchgeführt wird. Es geht darum, Verbrechen elektronisch zu dokumentieren. Das Projekt hätte allerdings ähnlich gut mit proprietärer Software durchgeführt werden können. Als Argument pro SoftwareLibre taugte es jedenfalls für mich wenig.
Die Bewertung von SoftwareLibre mit dessen konkreten Verwendungen zu verknüpfen führt zu Widersprüchen. (Klar, man könnte versuchen, Überwachungssoftware mit Waffen zu vergleichen: ist die Waffe das Übel oder der, der den Abzug drückt? Waffen werden aber auch zur Verteidigung eingesetzt etc. Was ist, wenn durch Überwachungs-SoftwareLibre in falsche Hände gerät? etc. etc.). Ich denke hier ist jeder Einzelne gefragt, ethische Abwägungen zu treffen (z. B. nicht an Überwachungssoftware mitzuentwickeln; eine einfache Bibliothek dagegen kann man vielleicht mit einem Hammer vergleichen, der per se eher neutral zu bewerten ist). Und um politisches Engagement kommt man bei diesen Fragen nicht herum.
Irgendwo steht bei der FSF, dass SoftwareLibre nicht den Anspruch hat, Allheilmittel zu sein, sondern notwendige Voraussetzung und positiver Katalysator für bestimmte Prozesse in einer demokratischen Gesellschaft. Auch wenn einmal die Voraussetzung geschaffen wäre (-> die meiste Software ist libre oder es gibt sogar ein Gesetz dafür), heißt das ja noch lange nicht, dass alles gut ist. Mit Macht und Gier beseelte Personen werden weiterhin versuchen mit allen zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln andere Personen zu unterdrücken. Zum Erhalt von Grundrechten wird vermutlich immer gekämpft werden müssen.

Nicht viel. SoftwareLibre auf Facebook-Servern schützt die Rechte der Facebook-Serverbetreiber, aber nicht der Nutzer von Facebook. Daher gibt es ja z. B. die AGPL, weil am Ende ist relevant, dass das, was der einfache Bürger an Software nutzt, von anderen Menschen unabhängig kontrolliert werden kann, damit böswillige Funktionen dort gar nicht erst erscheinen oder einfach wieder ausgebaut werden können.

ich kenn den Typen nicht, seine vergangenen Meriten auch nicht, und weiß nicht, was der auf Mastodon schreibt, aber ich finde, der schreibt wie ein Troll.
Verbal wild um sich schlagen ohne eine einzige Alternative anzubieten. Ein einzelnes Beispiel rauspicken, das mehr damit zu tun hat, das das Projekt mangels Finanzierung eingestellt wurde (Geary). Und als zweites Beispiel einen Konferenzveranstalter, der ihm sogar einen Slot zur Verfügung gestellt hatte, aber nicht wollte, daß er die Diskussion bei allen anderen Veranstaltungen auf seine Themen lenkt. Google, Mozilla und EFF/FSF auf eine Stufe stellen und zum "Beleg" der Mißstände auf eine nichtssagende Seite über Mozilla (moco) verlinken.
Ironie mag ja ein adequates Stilmittel sein, aber hier sieht man im Text den Schaum vor seinem Mund. Wahrscheinlich hat er's nicht vertragen, daß er seinen Dampf auf der Konferenz nicht ablassen durfte wie er wollte und der Geary-Frust hat ihm den Rest gegeben.
Auf diesen Artikel würde ich nicht reagieren, da disqualifiziert er sich selbst. Trolle ignoriert man.
Das angesprochene Thema (abhängigkeit von Geldgebern) ist natürlich wichtig und daran müssen die betroffenen Organisationen kontinuierlich arbeiten, aber das tun sie ohnehin - nach meinem Eindruck - bei aller Kritik, die ich selbst an Mozilla habe. Don't bash it, fork it!
Wo es sich grad anbietet: Werbung !!! Waterfox ist ein sehr schöner datenschutzbewußter Firefox fork. Und Librefox steht in den Startlöchern. Beides leider 1-Personen-Projekte ohne Geld.

Ich meine, offen gestanden sind die Herausforderung für Aktivisten derzeit groß genug, auch ohne dass sie sich gegenseitig zusätzlich das Leben schwer machen. So, wie die Diskussion derzeit läuft, könnte es destruktiver kaum sein...

über den Autor weiss ich leider nichts, aber es kommt mir schon so vor als würde er sich nicht erst seit letzter Woche mit freier Software beschäftigen.
Die Argumentationslinie finde ich allerdings ein wenig dünn. Nur mal als Beispiel den ersten Teil zu Google, Microsoft und der FSF. Ich meine alle drei sind Sponsoren dieser Veranstaltung und dadurch wird gesichert das diese stattfindet. Wenn also Google und Microsoft Geld für diese Themen ausgeben, warum sollte dann die FSF sich dann davon abgrenzen? Würde ich keine Bahn mehr fahren, weil AFD Politiker auch den Zug nutzen?
Sogar RMS hat in einem Interview gesagt, das Microsoft erste Schritte zu freier Software macht und er davon ausgeht, das da noch mehr Nachkommt. (https://www.tfir.io/richard-stallman-talks-about-microsoft-linux-azure-spher...)
Ich bin schon der Meinung das Google, Microsoft u.a. ein hohes Interesse an Themen wie Privacy haben denn sie werden ständig damit konfrontiert und müssen ja irgendwie reagieren. (Und sei es nur mit guten Promo Kampagnen)
Es ist Teil ihres Geschäftes den Kunden im Laden zu halten, damit er noch mehr Geld bei ihnen ausgibt. Genau da liegt auch der Unterschied zur FSF, die hat nunmal die Mission das die Welt mehr über die Vorteile freier Software erfährt. (Geld braucht man da auch, aber keine Rendite).
So könnte man jetzt jeden Punkt dieses Artikel durchhandeln, aber ich glaube das wäre zu viel.
Mein Fazit: Der Artikel hat viel Wahrheit und eine Menge (schönen) Sarkasmus. Zur Diskussion sollte er in jedem Fall anregen und auch, die eigene Handlungsweise zu überdenken.
Die Beispiele im einzelnen kann man immer so und so sehen. Achja und ich finde das es solche Artikel, die "den Finger in die Wunde legen" viel häufiger geben sollte, denn die Reaktionen darauf zeigen wie wichtig diese Themen sind.

Selbstverständlich soll und muss die FSFE weiterhin Google und die anderen Datenhändler kritisieren und darf dabei kein Blatt vor den Mund nehmen.
Dass Google die FSFE finanziell unterstützt, ist purer Eigennutz:
- Die Sache der freien Software nutzt Google ja ganz direkt. - Gut fürs Image, zieht potentielle Mitarbeiter/innen an etc.
Die kriegen da schon genug dafür, da müssen wir nicht unsere Meinung oder unsere Sprache für verkaufen ;)
Ist der Deal für die FSFE okay? Ich würde schon sagen - die Dienstleistung, die die FSFE gegen Spende anbietet, ist der Einsatz für freie Software und die Nennung auf der Donors-Seite. Strings attached? Nope.
Warum man aber Facebook Keynote-Slots auf Datenschutzkonferenzen gibt, kann ich auch nicht nachvollziehen.

Auf beiden Seiten muss man also erwägen, ob das Geschäft sich lohnt oder ob die Risiken zu hoch sind. Bei Google dürfte diese Entscheidung relativ einfach sein.
Ich maße mir nicht an, zu entscheiden, ob der Deal ok ist. Auch nicht, ob Google "gut" oder "böse" ist (vermutlich beides). Wobei die NGO bereits dann ihre Glaubwürdigkeit risikiert, wenn genügend Menschen den Sponsor nur für überwiegend "böse" halten.
Die FSFE würde sich auch ohne die Spende für Freie Software, wenn auch mit geringerem Aufwand einsetzen. Die Nennung auf der Donors-Seite dient gerade dem Imagetransfer, ist also nur Mittel zum Zweck.

Ich stimme ihm da zu. Auch die FSFE muss halt ethisch abwägen, von wem sie Geld nimmt (Überwachern, Waffenhändlern etc.). Wenn man Geld von solchen Firmen nimmt, was ich erstmal grundsätzlich nicht falsch finde, muss man auch den Widerspruch aushalten, dass das evtl. anderen ethischen Grundsätzen, die man sonst so als Organisation vertritt, widerspricht, und dass man dafür von anderen, die diese ethischen Grundsätze wichtiger finden als das Geld, (zurecht) kritisiert wird.

Solange jeder für sich entscheidet, was für ihn ethisch akzeptabel ist und was nicht, ist "nur" das Gewissen des Einzelnen die entscheidende Instanz.
Ich will nicht sagen, dass eine solche Entscheidungsfindung einfach ist, aber bei einer Organisation sind halt viele Einzelne involviert und das macht die Entscheidungsfindung in Gestalt einer ethischen Abwägung eben etwas komplizierter.
Auch kann der Einzelne nur seinen Kenntnisstand zur Grundlage einer ethischen Abwägung nehmen. Bei einer Organisation ist der Kenntnisstand der Einzelnen aber regelmäßig unterschiedlich.
Hinzu kommt noch, dass bei einer solchen Entscheidung einer Organisation auch andere Gesichtspunkte notwendigerweise eine Rolle spielen.
Daher wird hier ja diskutiert, nämlich auch um "Einsicht" bezüglich der Fakten zu schaffen und möglichst viele Aspekte zu beleuchten..
Für mich reichen halt die mir bekannten Fakten derzeit noch nicht aus, um eine dezidierte Meinung zu vertreten, ob die FSFE bestimmte Sponsoren akzeptieren kann oder eher nicht akzeptieren sollte.

Meinen Stand nach würden wir bei der FSFE weiterhin keine Geldgeberin akzeptieren, welche sich außerhalb des erlaubten Rahmens der demokratischen Rechtssysteme in Europa bewegt oder dem Zweck der Satzung stark schaden würde.
Der letzte Punkte muss natürlich immer neu disktuiert werden. Wir möchten einigen Unternehmen welche sich selbst in der Vergangenheit als politische Gegner Freier Software positioniert haben natürlich keine Plattform bieten.
Sofern sich Großunternehmen in die richtige Richtung bewegen, halte ich es trotzdem für richtig, diese guten Schritte zu loben und positiv zu verstärken. Die Kritik der anderen Praktiken bleibt natürlich bestehen und muss ebenfalls erneuert werden. Da große IT-Unternehmen viele Menschen beschäftigen und viel Software einsetzen oder entwickeln, können wir eine Umwandlung der Gesellschaft hin zu mehr Freiheit bei Software nicht gut schaffen, ohne diese Unternehmen und deren Leute mitzunehmen. Es gibt viel berechtige Kritik an Google und IBM (Redhat), trotzdem haben sie in den letzten 2 Jahrzehnten auch viel für Freie Software getan, deutlich mehr als andere Unternehmen, wie beispielsweise Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk oder SAP. Doch auch die letzgenannten Unternehmen haben jeweils schon etwas für Freie Software gemacht. Das ist gut und eine positive Entwicklung. Trotzdem brauchen wir viel mehr und darauf sollten wir drängen.

Ich möchte hierzu nur nochmal anmerken: Es tut mir und anderen in der FSFE weh, wenn uns vorgeworfen wird, dass wir bestimmte Dinge nur wegen bestimmter Spender machen. Das tut weh, weil wir an uns selbst den Anspruch haben, dass wir das selbst erkennen und uns dann nicht von Spendern in unserer Einschätzung beeinflussen lassen. Wir haben den Anspruch an uns, dass wir unsere Satzung erfüllen.
Allerdings bleibt bei vielen Menschen beim Annehmen von Geschenken oft das Gefühl, etwas dafür zurückgeben zu müssen. Daher ist es enorm wichtig, dass ihr und andere uns konstruktiv und konkret kritisiert, wenn ihr den Eindruck von Beeinflussung habt.
Das hilft uns, uns immer wieder selbst zu hinterfragen und neu zu bewerten; es stärkt uns Spenden abzulehnen, die eine Beeinflussung darstellen. Wir mussten erst in den letzten Wochen wieder eine Spende ablehnen, weil dabei sonst unsere Neutralität beeinflusst worden wäre und wir werden das auch weiterhin tun.

Ja, das sehe ich exakt genau so. Deswegen die Diskussion dazu. Solche Vorwürfe kommen gelegentlich sowohl von Leuten, die unsere Ideen prinzipiell teilen, aber mit anderem Fokus unterwegs sind (siehe Aral Balkan, womit der Thread ja losging), aber auch von Leuten, die uns im Wesentlichen beschädigen wollen. Deswegen braucht es Klarheit dazu.

Diese Reisestipendien gab es wirklich, die Kosten für die zwei Übernachtungen gibt Edri mit jeweils 50 Euro an - macht 450 Euro, wie bei Caspary. Das Geld gab es allerdings nicht "für die Demoteilnahme" und schon gar nicht für "gekaufte Demonstranten", sondern für die "Reisekosten von bis zu 350 Euro", um nach Brüssel zu kommen
In dem Fall ging es nicht um Google, sonder Microsoft und Twitter, aber im Grunde ist ein Tech-Riese durch den anderen austauschbar in dieser Frage.
Da Gegendarstellungen (so gut wie) nicht gelesen werden bleibt die Information im Raum, dass amerikanische Großunternehmen eine "NGO" bezahlt haben um Demonstranten zu mobilisieren. Vor allem da sie in einem Medium platziert wurde, das vermutlich hauptsächlich außerhalb der Filterblase von EDRi gelesen wird, wo hingegen die Gegendarstellung gelesen werden wird.

Ich habe die Transparenzberichte von edri überflogen und bin dort dann relativ schnell bei Mozilla gelandet. Bei Mozilla wissen wir durchaus, daß dort in substantiellem Umfang Abhängigkeit von Einnahmen aus Werbung von Google und Konsorten stammt, und Mozilla hatte im Firefox leider auch schon (siehe die Debatte um Google Analytics auf der Addons-Seite) Themen, die dort zumindest vorsichtige Diskussionen über "fehlende Abgrenzungen" nahelegen.
In diese Richtung, mit etwas anderem Fokus, geht auch dies hier, das in ähnlicher Art und Weise die EFF zu demontieren versucht.

Auch das ist so ein Dokument, das in den letzten Tagen häufiger in meinen Kanälen aufgetaucht ist, und IMHO ist das durchaus problematisch. Nimm eine Handvoll von NGOs und Bürgerrechts-Organisationen, nimm Organisationen, die FLOSS unterstützen - no matter who: Mindestens Google und Microsoft werden sich relativ schnell auf einer Sponsoren-Seite finden, schlimmstenfalls auch relativ weit oben.
Minimale Erwartungshaltung wäre: Es gibt dort eine *sehr klare* Abgrenzung zwischen denen, die Geld in den Hut werfen, und denen, die das Geld für Projekte ausgeben. Aber selbst dann werden solche Organisationen immer "angreifbar" bleiben, nicht zuletzt in einem Umfeld, in dem (auf der "anderen" Seite) Spenden mit dem Ziel direkter Einflußnahme vermutlich nicht die Ausnahme, sondern gänzlich erwartungskonform sind.
Wir brauchen bessere Finanzierung. ;)

Hallo Liste,
der Vorwurf von Caspary war ein durchsichtiges politisches Manöver. Wer ihm glauben will, tut das, und ist für uns ohnehin nicht erreichbar. Über diese Leute brauchen wir uns keine Gedanken zu machen. Jeder andere weiß, daß Lobbyisten in der EU mit Millionen bezahlt werden, und nicht nur mit 450 Euro. Das mangelnde Geld ist ***DER*** Grund, warum wir in der EU und sonstwo nichts erreichen. Geld regiert die Welt. Ihr glaubt doch nicht etwa, da ginge es um Argumente?
Aber bei den Menschen, die für uns erreichbar sind, hat der "die sind alle gekauft"-Vorwurf den gegenteiligen Effekt: Wut und Solidarität. Im Endeffekt führt das zu einem weiteren Spalt in unserer Gesellschaft. Gut? Eher nicht. Aber wir haben das nicht angefangen.
Ich weigere mich, mich auf die Finanzierungsdebatte überhaupt einzulassen. Solange Geld die Welt regiert, ist der Vorwurf stinkend verlogen. Und das ist zurückhaltend ausgedrückt. Die wollen uns auch noch von den wenigen Ressourcen trennen, die wir überhaupt haben. Und sie wissen, daß bei uns Moral ein Argument ist. Natürlich muß man drauf achten, daß Zuwendungen nicht mit inakzeptablen Bedingungen verknüpft sind. Und darauf zu achten, ist unsere Aufgabe. Aber es geht darum, ob tatsächlich Bedingungen da sind, es geht um tatsächliches Fehlverhalten, und nicht um den äußeren Anschein oder den behaupteten Verdacht.
Lasst Euch diese Debatte nicht aufzwingen. Lasst Euch nicht verarschen. Ach, was soll ich sagen, Ihr habt die Debatte ja vorher schon selbst angefangen ...

Minimale Erwartungshaltung wäre: Es gibt dort eine *sehr klare* Abgrenzung zwischen denen, die Geld in den Hut werfen, und denen, die das Geld für Projekte ausgeben. Aber selbst dann werden solche Organisationen immer "angreifbar" bleiben, nicht zuletzt in einem Umfeld, in dem (auf der "anderen" Seite) Spenden mit dem Ziel direkter Einflußnahme vermutlich nicht die Ausnahme, sondern gänzlich erwartungskonform sind.
Wir brauchen bessere Finanzierung. ;)

Ich hab keine wirklich bessere Idee, aber durchaus die Sorge, daß dieser Umstand unsere moralischen Argumente im schlimmsten Fall relativ leicht aushebelbar macht...

Ich verstehe die FSFE als Lobby-Organisation für freie Software. Wenn sie das schafft, wäre das schon gut, "mehr" muß sie gar nicht sein. Nur mit Lobbyismus kann man in der Politik was erreichen. Und das kostet Geld, was irgendwoher kommen muß. Prinzipienreiterei kann man sich dabei nicht leisten, Hauptsache, das Pferd läuft in die richtige Richtung.
Lobbytätigkeit, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Fortbildung - auf diese Kernthemen sollte sich die FSFE beschränken. Den Rest der Welt mögen andere retten.
Der letzte Rundbrief "Rücktritt vom Legal Team" deutet allerdings an, daß es beim Lobbying ziemlich hakt. Keine Ahnung, ob das stimmt, was da behauptet wird.

dem kann ich nur zustimmen. Bei der FSFE haben wir allerdings schon viele Einzelpersonen die uns finanziell fördern. Dafür gibt es zwei Wege: kleine Spenden oder regelmäßiger Unterstützer.
Schauen wir uns das für 2017 mal an:
Auf https://fsfe.org/about/funds/2017.de.html ist ersichtlich, dass 38% von unseren regelmäßigere Unterstützern kommen. Auf der Spendenseite https://fsfe.org/donate/thankgnus-2017.de.html steht, dass die kleinen Spenden ein Drittel unseres Budgets ausmachen, dann wären wir bei rund 70% Finanzierung durch Unterstützer und Kleinspenden. (Jetzt gehe ich mal davon aus, dass sich die beiden Zahlen nicht überschneiden, da frage ich nochmal nach.) Weitere 25% der Einnahmen kamen aus Projekten und dem Verkauf von Artikeln, blieben rund 5-6% größere Spender übrig.

Bei der Urheberrechtsreform wurden wir in Brüssel gut gehört, je länger und seriöser wir auftreten. Bei unserer Aktion Public Money Public Code bekommen wir sehr viel politische Unterstützung, dass ist der Vorteil das Thema auf einen Aspekt voran zu bringen. Mit dem Microsoft-Dilemma haben wir letztes Jahr eine Dokumentation gesehen, welche Verständlich über Freie Software einer sehr breiten Öffentlichlichkeit in der ARD zugänglich gemacht hat. Angesichts dieser aktuellen Aufklärungserfolge sehe ich die FSFE insgesamt auf einem guten Weg über die Jahre. Natürlich gibt es ein Auf- und Ab und viel zu Verbessern, gerade weil FSFE reifer geworden ist.
Ein Punkt ist mir jedoch noch wichtig: Die FSFE ist **keine** Lobbyorganisation, da wir primär Aufklärung ("Volksbildung") betreiben. Das führt zwar dazu, dass wir manchmal in Lobbys sitzen und mit Volksvertretern sprechen, allerdings nicht als Hauptaufgabe. Hauptsächlich möchten wir, dass die Beziehung von Software zu allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft besser verstanden wird und was Freie Software ist und warum das Konzept entwickelt worden ist.

Doch, die Zahlen überschneiden sich, also 30% des Geldeingangs durch kleine Spenden und Förderer.
Nochmal neu überschlagen: Dann die genannten 25% für Verkauf und konkrete Projekte. Mindestens 8% durch die genannten Silber und Bronze-Sponsoren, das könnte auch mehr mehr sein. Das wären 63%. Also mindestens 21% durch die genannten Gold-Sponsoren. Es könnten also zwischen 21% und 37% von den Gold-Sponsoren kommen sein. Es ist für 2017 auch zu bedenken, dass etwa 17% des Budget in dem Jahr nicht ausgegeben wurden, die finanzielle Abhängigkeit von allen 6 Gold-Spendern zusammen war für das Jahr eher zwischen 4% und 20% des Budgets.
Natürlich wäre es schön, mehr Finanzmittel zu haben, aber die jetzige Breite der Spender und Fördermitgliedschaften ist bereits eine solide Basis für unabhängige Arbeit.

Wenn ich heute im Fernsehen die Leute sehe, deren politischen Aufstieg ich aus der Nähe miterlebt habe, dann wird mir ... anders.
Lobbyismus ist, ob man will oder nicht, eine tragende Säule unseres politischen Systems. Wer etwas erreichen will, muß diese Realität akzeptieren und mitspielen oder eben scheitern. Lobbyismus ist im übrigen nach meinem Verständnis eine ehrenhafte Tätigkeit, denn es ist der ehrliche Kampf für offen dargelegte Ziele und man kann als Hauptwaffe das Argument nutzen. Niedertracht kann man vermeiden. Ganz ohne Geld geht es aber leider nicht.

Mir scheint darüber werde ich mich noch mehr kundig machen müssen, um es noch besser zu beschreiben. Die juristischen Begriffe scheinen denen der Politikwissenschaft und den Alltagsbedeutungen teilweise entgegen zu stehen.

Nach dem deutschen und englischen Wikipedia-Artikel zum Lobbying handelt es sich um die Bezeichnung eines bestimmten Verfahrens zur Politik-Beeinflussung. Wenn dabei von "Interessengruppen" die Rede ist, heißt das ja nicht, daß es nur um die Vertretung von Partikularinterssen gehen muß - auch wenn das meistens der Fall ist. Gerade gesamt-gesellschaftliche Interessen benötigen dringend eine Lobby, sonst fallen sie - wie so oft - einfach hinten runter.
Bei der Gemeinnützigkeit geht es um die verfolgten Zwecke (aus dem Katalog der Abgabenordnung) und nicht um die (legale) Methode. Aus der Satzung der FSFE kann ich leider nicht genau ersehen, auf welchem Zweck die Gemeinnützigkeit beruht. Auf der Webseite steht Volksbildung. Das ist nicht erst seit dem Attack-Urteil gefährlich. Kampagnen wie "Public Money, Public Code" bwegen sich hinsichtlich Volksbildung im Graubereich. Ich empfehle immer, die Förderung des demokratischen Staatswesens in den Vereinszweck mitaufzunehmen. Unter "Volksbildung" sind nur Kampagnen zu bildungspolitischen Themen erlaubt. Dazu gehört PMPC nicht.

Im ersten Sinne nicht, wollen wir auch nicht, im aufklärerischen Sinne doch.
Nach dem Attack-Urteil müßte die FSFE sogar wertneutral zu freier und proprietärer Software gleichmäßig informieren.
In dem wir die Unterschiede erklären, informieren wir natürlich auch darüber, was proprietäre Software ausmacht und wie sie sich erkennen lässt. Der Bedarf an Bildung ist gerade in dem Bereich groß, insbesondere wie Software auf das demokratische Staatswesen wirkt.

Ob Du und ich hier einer Meinung sind oder nicht, ist egal. In Steuerfragen geht man tunlichst kein Risiko ein, denn das ist finanziell gefährlich. Der derzeitig allein steuerbefreite Vereinszweck "Volksbildung" *ist* ein Risiko, und ein unnötiges dazu. Man kann das Risiko verringern mit § 52 II Nr. 24 AO im Vereinszweck (und etwas mehr Mäßigung als Attac). Ich hoffe, der FSFE-Vorstand liest mit und kümmert sich um dieses Problem.

Die FSFE ist eine Organisation von Freiwilligen, die sich für Freie Software und Offene Standards einsetzen. Diese Freiwilligen sind die "Ressource" der FSFE, nicht das Geld der Wirtschaft.
Das Geld, was die FSFE einwirbt wird verwendet, um die Arbeit dieser Freiwilligen zu unterstützen, was definitiv ein wichtiger Beitrag ist. Aber außerhalb der Exekutive, die nur einen sehr sehr kleinen Teil der GA geschweige denn von der Supporter-Community ausmacht, leben eigentlich alle ganz gut ohne das Geld der Sponsoren und machen ihre Meinung nicht abhängig.
Wenn wir das vergessen, und unsere "Macht" mit dem Geld, dass man uns gibt, gleichsetzen, dann haben diese Behauptungen schon Früchte getragen.

Wenn bei ALLEN Zielen der FSFE mit den Zielen der Sponsoren zumindest kein Widerspruch (besser Gleichklang) besteht, dann geht das Sponsoring IMHO in Ordnung.
Schwierig würde es dann, wenn die Sponsoren im Gegenzug von der FSFE nicht so "hart angegangen" würden, wie es angemessen wäre. Aber hier kann es sich speziell die FSFE noch verhältnismäßig einfach machen, ist sie doch keine Datenschutz-NGO, auch wenn ich hier persönlich Bauchschmerzen habe.
Hingegen wäre ein Sponsoring von Microsoft, die gleichzeitig gegen PMPC agieren, ein massiver Problem, insbesondere wenn das irgendetwas an der Ausrichtung von PMPC ändern würde. Das ist aber nicht der Fall.
Ganz unabhängig davon gibt es IMHO natürlich Sponsoren, z.B. autokratische Staaten, die ein strategisches Interesse an Freier Software haben, mit denen man sich nicht gemein machen sollte. Aber auch hier kann ich bei der FSFE kein Problem erkennen.
