In den letzten Monaten hat die Entwicklungsplattform SourceForge, welche eine große Anzahl von Freie Software-Projekten beherbergt, ihre Politik geändert. Möglichkeiten ein Projekt vollständig von SourceForge zu exportieren wurden entfernt. Die dahinter stehende Technik bestand früher ausschliesslich aus Freier Software; nun basiert sie auch auf nicht-freier Software. Weiterhin wurden die Versuche von VA Linux[1] die Beiträge von externen Mitentwicklern zu kontrollieren immer undurchsichtiger. SourceForge hat viel Gutes für die Freie Software-Gemeinde getan, doch nun ist die Zeit gekommen sich zu befreien.
* Einsperren von Benutzern in einer Welt unfreier Software
SourceForge brachte Freier Software eine vereinheitlichte und standardisierte Entwicklungsmethodik, aufbauend auf modernen Werkzeugen. Diese Werkzeuge (Fehlerdatenbank, Versionskontrolle durch CVS, Webseiten, Benutzerunterstützung, Foren, Umfragen, Nachrichtenkanäle, usw.) waren zwar vorher schon einzeln erhältlich, aber wenige Entwickler nutzen sie alle zusammen, weil sie dafür die Kombination eigenhängig aufsetzen mussten. SourceForge machte die Möglichkeiten, sowohl für neue und erfahrende Entwickler, leicht zugänglich.
Wegen dieses Komforts von SourceForge ist seine Sammlung von Diensten für viele Entwickler selbstverständlich geworden. Sie würden nur ungern zu den alten Verhältnisse zurückkehren. Unglücklicherweise bedeutet das auch, dass wenn SourceForge in die falsche Richtung geht, es tendentiell viele Freie Software-Entwickler mit sich zieht.
Die zweite wichtige Sache, welche SoureForge ausmachte, war, dass sie diese Umgebung ausschliesslich mit Freier Software aufbauten und zur Verfügung stellten. Insofern bot SourceForge der Freien Software-Gemeinde nicht nur eine mächtige Methodik an, sondern demonstrierte damit gleichzeitig was mit Freier Software möglich ist und warb dafür Freie Software zu verwenden. Und da die spezielle Software für SourceForge frei war, konnte jeder einen ähnlichen Service aufsetzen. Die SourceForge-Software wurde so unwiderruflich für Entwickler in aller Welt zugänglich. Entwickler, welche (beispielsweise) in Indien leben und sich den Datendurchsatz zum SourgeForge-Server nicht leisten können, wären in der angenehmen Lage die gleichen Möglichkeiten auf ihrem Server einzurichten.
Im August 2001 vollzog VA Linux eine Kehrtwende in ihrer Politik und fügte proprietäre Software zum SourgeForge-Server hinzu. Mit der Ankündigung, gibt Larry Augustin (VA Linux CEO) an, dass die Benutzer von SourceForge.net "praktisch keinen Unterschied bemerken würden". Das mag zwar stimmen, wenn letztere Scheuklappen aufsetzten und nur einbezögen, was dieser eine Server ihnen bietet und wie er sich bedienen läßt. Wenn wir jedoch über die Auswirkungen nachdenken, stellt sich die Situation ganz anders dar. Anstatt ein gutes Beispiel für Freie Software zu sein, demonstriert SourceForge nun unfreie Software. Es besteht die Gefahr, dass die vielen tausend registrierten Menschen sich an SourceForge und damit an die mit unfreier Software implementierten Möglichkeiten gewöhnen.
Ihnen als Entwickler Freier Software wäre es weiterhin gestattet den SourceForge-Server ohne Entgeld zu nutzen, aber Sie würden die Freiheit die verwendetet Software zu vervielfältigen, anzupassen, zu studieren und weiterzugeben verlieren. Sie wären nicht frei einen ähnlichen Server selbst aufzusetzen oder auf Ihre Bedürfnisse anzupassen. Die letzte Veröffentlichung der SourceForge-Server-Software liegt ein Jahr zurück.
Die Hinwendung zu unfreier Software war das Ergebniss einer Reihe von Schritten mit dem Ziel die Benutzer an SourgeForge zu ketten. Es gab nie einen Weg ein Projekt vollständig aus SourgeForge zu extrahieren. Es gab Anstrengungen in diese Richtung deren Ergebnisse dieses Jahr wieder entfernt wurden. Zur Zeit ist nur der CVS-Baum und die Fehlerdatenbank (mit /export/sf_tracker_export.php) erhältlich. Wenige Leute wissen von letzterem, da die Methode nicht beschrieben ist. Die Export-Seite beschreibt wie Skripte verwendet werden, welche schon nicht mehr existieren. Die Implementation von weiteren Export-Möglichkeiten wurde gestoppt. Das Entwicklungsteam besteht ausschliesslich aus Angestellten von VA Linux und ein paar wenigen Leuten, welche den Quelltext nicht rausgeben dürfen.
Die Archive der E-Mail-Verteiler, ein Hauptangebot von SourceForge, werden seit kurzem als nicht mehr betreut. Wird diese Angebot durch eine Lösung mit unfreier Software ersetzt?
* Aneignung der Arbeit Freiwilliger
Folgendes passierte mir kurz vor der Ankündigung, SourceForge würde unfreie Software benutzen und entwickeln. Da ich als Beitragender zur SourceForge Software aufgeführt bin (in den Quellen und der der Dokumentation) erhielt ich von VA Linux die Anfrage ihnen die Nutzungsrechte zu überschreiben. Das war weder überraschend noch war ich darüber unglücklich. Viele Freie Software-Projekte verlangen von Entwicklern, dass sie die Nutzungrechte an ihren Änderungen an den Hauptautor übertragen. Die Überschreibung auf einen alleinigen Rechteinhaber ist eine Strategie um die GNU GPL effektiver verteidigen zu können und gern hätte ich auf diese Weise kooperiert.
Als ich jedoch die Einzelheiten der Vereinbarung las, entdeckte ich schwerwiegende Probleme. Ich wurde aufgefordert die Rechte an meinem Werk, "welches in der jetzigen Version der SourceForge Software-Entwicklungsplattform oder eventuell auch in einer zukünftigen verwendet wird" zu übertragen. Die Übertragung war nicht auf meinen Beitrag zur SourceForge-Software beschränkt, sondern bezog sich möglichweise auf mein gesamtes, bereits erstelltes oder zukünftiges Werk, wenn für SourceForge daran irgendwie Interesse besteht.
Ich erwartete ausserdem die Zusage, dass mein Werk unter der der GNU GPL herausgegeben würde, aber die Vereinbarung enthielt nichts über Freie Software. VA Linux wäre es erlaubt, die Software welche ich schrieb unter einer unfreien Software-Lizenz herauszugeben und sie der Gemeinschaft vorzuenthalten. Zu diesem Moment war ich mir noch nicht sicher, ob diese Sorge nicht unberechtigt war, da VA Linux ausschliesslich Freie Software erstellte und einsetzte. Zwei Wochen später entschieden sie unfreie Software in SourceForge einzuführen und das warf ein anderes Licht auf die Frage.
VA Linux sagte mir, sie hätten die Vereinbarung nur an zwei Personen geschickt, in der Hoffnung sie zu verbessern. Wir begannen eine zwei Monate lange Diskussion. Ich nahm an, die Diskussion habe zum Ziel die Vereinbarung passender für die Freie Software-Gemeinde machen, also bemühte ich mich konstruktiv beizutragen. Schlussendlich erhielt ich eine Version der Nutzungsrechtsübertragung erstellt von der Rechtabteilung. Ich zitiere es hier vollständig:

Das griff nach noch mehr Rechten als der erste Entwurf. "Sie erlauben uns alles, wir versprechen nichts". An diesem Punkt wusste ich, dass die Versuche die Vereinbarung klarer abzufassen Zeitverschwendung waren. VA Linux sammelte die Nutzungrechte offensichtlich nicht, um damit die GNU GPL durchzusetzen.
* Wege aus der Fallgrube
Für Menschen welche Freiheit als Wert schätzen, ist nun die Zeit gekommen, sich von SourgeForge abzuwenden. Es hat sich in eine Teergrube verwandelt von der zu entkommen immer schwerer werden wird. Software-Entwicklungs-Server, welche vollständig auf Freier Sofware basieren, gibt es viele auf der ganzen Welt. Es es möglich einen eigenen auszusetzen, sich einem bestehenden anzuschliessen oder die darunter liegende Software zu schreiben. Vor einigen Monaten half ich mit für das GNU-Projekt Savannah aufzusetzen, weil ich den Bedarf für eine gemeinschaftlich betriebene Plattform sah. Zusammen mit Freunden und Mitentwicklern sind wir dabei Software für verteile Softwareentwicklungs-Server neu zu schreiben und herauszugeben. Die Idee ist, einen SourceForge ähnlichen Dienst innerhalb weniger Stunden aufsetzen zu können. Savannah wird Ende des Jahres mit dieser Software laufen. Zu Beginn mag sie weniger Funktionalität als SourceForge haben, aber sie hat eine strahlende Zukunft weil sie ihre Wurzeln in einer gemeinschaftlichen Leistung von Leute hat, welche Freie Software miteinander teilen.
SourceForge war wie Freibier, weil es von Anfang an so entworfen wurde. Es war ein sehr teures Geschenk von sehr kurzer Haltbarkeit für die Freie Software-Gemeinschaft. Wir sollten wütend auf VA Linux sein, uns ein solch vergiftetes Geschenk gemacht zu machen. Auf der anderen Seite denke ich, dass wir VA Linux danken sollten. Sie brachten uns die Methodik und lehrten uns, dass eine Plattform für Entwicklungs-Server verteilt und in gemeinschaftlicher Art und Weise entwickelt werden muss; nicht von einem einzelnen Unternehmen, was alles von vorne bis hinten kontrolliert. Das bedeutet selbstverständlich auch, das jeder ein wenig Zeit zum Entwickeln und Pflegen solcher Angebote für Entwickler einbringen muss. wenn ich an einem Projekt teilnaehme, und - sagen wir mal - weniger als 5% des gesamten sources geschrieben haette, und der Hauptautor des Sources will meine Erlaubnis, seinen Code zusammen mit meinem darin enthaltenen Code zu verkaufen - kein Problem, ich will mir nicht anmassen dem 'Hauptautor' vorzuschreiben, was er mit dem Code machen soll, vor allem, wenn seine Kinder schon am Hungertuch nagen, weil der Papi keine Kohle mit nach Hause bringt.

Zusammen mit Freunden und Mitentwicklern sind wir dabei Software für verteile Softwareentwicklungs-Server neu zu schreiben und herauszugeben. Die

Idee ist, einen SourceForge ähnlichen Dienst innerhalb weniger Stunden aufsetzen zu können. Savannah wird Ende des Jahres mit dieser Software laufen. Zu Beginn mag sie weniger Funktionalität als SourceForge haben, aber sie hat eine strahlende Zukunft weil sie ihre Wurzeln in einer gemeinschaftlichen Leistung von Leute hat, welche Freie Software miteinander teilen.
Hallo Schlauberger - kann savannah auch zehntausende von Projekten hosten? Wer bezahlt euch das?
SourceForge war wie Freibier, weil es von Anfang an so entworfen wurde. Es war ein sehr teures Geschenk von sehr kurzer Haltbarkeit für die Freie Software-Gemeinschaft. Wir sollten wütend auf VA Linux sein, uns ein solch vergiftetes Geschenk gemacht zu machen. Auf der anderen Seite denke ich, dass wir VA Linux danken sollten. Sie brachten uns die Methodik und lehrten uns, dass eine Plattform für Entwicklungs-Server verteilt und in gemeinschaftlicher Art und Weise entwickelt werden muss; nicht von einem einzelnen Unternehmen, was alles von vorne bis hinten kontrolliert. Das bedeutet selbstverständlich auch, das jeder ein wenig Zeit zum Entwickeln und Pflegen solcher Angebote für Entwickler einbringen muss. Wir haben unser Glas ausgetrunken, es ist Zeit unsere Freiheit zu gewinnen.

Dem Autor taete zum einen etwas weniger Polemik gut, zum anderen sollte er sich mal Gedanken zu machen, wie man die Hardware und die Bandbreite die so ein Server verbraucht, bezahlt - offenbar lebt der Autor in einer Traumwelt, in der Bandbreite und CPU-Zeit nur so vom Himmel faellt, den er scheint sich nicht den *leisesten* Gedanken ueber Geld zu machen.
Und so fehlen auch total die konstruktiven Vorschlaege, wie man so viele Projekte hostet - nur meckern kann ich selber.
Im uebrigen kann ich hier die Loesung fuer die Frage bieten, wer denn die Bandbreite bezahlen soll:

Wahrscheinlich sollten wir auf ein verteiltes peer-to-peer Entwicklernetz setzten, es sollte also jeder, der ne DSL-Flatrate hat einen kleinen Teil dieser Projekte auf seinem heimischen Rechner hosten, das ist dann wirklich verteiltes Entwickeln.
Allerdings braucht man dazu auch stromsparende PC, um sie den ganzen Tag laufen zu lassen, sowie DSL und Flatrate - vor _meinem_ Haus liegt tolle Glasfaser :-((

Tja, vermutlich hat sich _weder_ ein anderes Unternehmen gefunden, das diese Informationen hostet, _noch_ haben sich Privatpersonen gefunden, die dieses Wissen hosten wollen und koennen.
Wenn es OSDN nicht gaebe, dann gaebe es diese Informationen gar nicht mehr, weil niemand sie gespeichert haette....

Es werden sich mit Sicherheit etliche Firmen finden, die Resourcen zur Verfügung stellen um ein paar Projekte zu hosten. Natürlich werden Spiegelungen etc. benötigt um die Unabhängigkeit zu garantieren.
Anonsonsten sollten wir einen Blick auf die Ergebnisse des 7. Calls des EC IST Programmes werfen. Dort wurden ja explizit Plattformen, Technologien, Konzepte für Entwicklerunterstützung zum Thema für Projektvorschläge gemacht. Noch in diesem Jahr werden dort Entscheidungen gefällt.

ja, das wäre sehr hilfreich und auch sinnvoll. Allerdings wird zumindest bei einigen Universitäten IP-Accounting eingeführt und die Kosten entsprechend auf die Fachbereiche umgelegt. Da konkurriert dann plötzlich die Unterstützung Freier Software mit anderen Kostenposten. Leider ist der Stellenwert Freier Software nicht in allen Köpfen soweit, dass Budget-Diskussionen in deren Sinne entschieden werden :-(

Aber so werden Projektarbeiten/Praktika etc nach Beendigung das Klo runtergespuelt - in Compilerbau haben etliche Gruppen jeweils einen 'MM Compiler' erstellt - sinnlose Zeitverschwendung, sich an einem freien Projekt zu beteiligen etc waer sinnvoller.

Andererseits haben die Unis auch einen Auftrag und bekommen dafür Geld. Die Priorisierung ist in Deutschland etwas aus dem Lot.

Naja, das ändert aber nichts an der Tatsache, daß Institutionen wie das MIT (gleich in mehrfacher Hinsicht), die Universität Helsinki (oder wie die Hochschule dort heißt), die University of Northern Carolina oder das finnische Bildungsministerium bis zur Hype Software für das GNU-System verteilt haben.

Noch wichtiger werden Peer-to-Peer Netzwerke werden, um Meinungen zu hosten - wann werden die Provider wohl anfangen, amerika-kritische Homepages von Netz zu nehmen? Laut 'Monitor' sind schon die ersten kritischen Lehrer fuer ihre Meinugsaeusserungen suspendiert worden :-(
In der c'T oder so war mal ein Test von Lotus Groove (oder wie hies dass), ein Groupware-Entwicklungswerkzeug auf Peer-To-Peer Basis.
So was wuerde ich gerne in freier Software sehen ;-)

In diesem speziellen Fall benötigt man allerdings keine Netzwerke, sondern eine leicht aufzusetzendes System. Ein
$ apt-get install sourceforge
würde es sehr leicht machen, viele Sites zu installieren, man kann sich dann aussuchen wo man etwas hostet uder selbst einen Server aufsetzen. Es hat auch den schönen Nebeneffekt, dass der ganze Berg von Nicht-Projekten erst gar nicht aufgebaut wird.
Es hat wohl schonmal einen Versuch gegeben ein Debian PAckage zu bauen, wegen der schelchten Konfigurierbarkkeit der Sourceforge Software ist das aber wohl wieder eingestellt worden.

sourceforge ist Bestandteil von Debian/unstable. ich habe gehört (aber nicht selber ausprobiert), dass das Paket relativ simple einzurichten ist. Außerdem weiß ich natürlich nicht, wie weit der auf Sourceforge eingesetzte Code von dem im Debian-Paket entfernt ist. Aber ein Anfang ist das allemal.

Das ist hier wohl jedem klar und steht außer Frage. Allerdings ist finanzielle Not keine Entschuldigung dafür, anderen die ihnen zustehenden Freiheiten im Umgang mit Software vorzuenthalten.
Der Versuch, die Sourceforge-Software zu verscherbeln, scheint ne Rettung fuer VA Linux zu sein - und GPL Software zu verkaufen _ist_ ein Problem, meiner Meinung nach. Leider. Und das sage ich als GPL Freak.
Dann sollen sie sich eben ein anderes Geschäftsmodell überlegen. Allerdings ist es aus Sicht der Freien Software Gemeinschaft schlicht nicht akzeptabel, wenn eine Firma die Entwickler heimlich an proprietäre Software gewöhnen will, auch wenn das die einfachste Möglichkeit sein mag, das Unternehmen zu retten.
Sagt mir wie ein Unternehmen wie VA Linux Geld verdient - oder noch besser, sagt es VA Linux.

Export-Möglichkeiten wurde gestoppt. Das Entwicklungsteam besteht ausschliesslich aus Angestellten von VA Linux und ein paar wenigen
Auf gut deutsch: es haben sich keine anderen freien Entwickler mit dem source befasst, es keinen interessiert, und daher kennen auch nur die VA Linux Leute den source.
In dem Fall ist es eher so, dass der Code seit langem nicht veröffentlicht wurde und deswegen gar niemand die Möglichkeit hat, an ihm mitzuentwickeln.
Sieht mir eigentlich eher nach zu wenig Beteiligung durch andere freie Entwickler aus?
Mir sieht es hingegen nach einem Code aus, der nicht in einem öffentlichen CVS liegt.
wenn ich an einem Projekt teilnaehme, und - sagen wir mal - weniger als 5% des gesamten sources geschrieben haette, und der Hauptautor des Sources will meine Erlaubnis, seinen Code zusammen mit meinem darin enthaltenen Code zu verkaufen - kein Problem, ich will mir nicht anmassen dem 'Hauptautor' vorzuschreiben, was er mit dem Code machen soll, vor allem, wenn seine Kinder schon am Hungertuch nagen, weil der Papi keine Kohle mit nach Hause bringt.
Du darfst das gerne so sehen, aber der Zweck der GPL ist es eigentlich, dass ein solches Szenario genau dann verhindert werden kann, wenn du das _nicht_ wollen würdest. Und es gibt eben auch Leute, die das nicht wollen, wie in diesem Fall.
Wenn er natuerlich Code beigetragen hat, als die Software schon nicht mehr unter der GPL stand - selber schuld.
Das siehst für mich eher nach GPL-Verletzung aus als nach "selber schuld".

Das war ne Anspielung auf 'linke Ideen' , im Vergleich 'unter Kontrolle einer Firma' <-> 'unter Kontrolle des Staates (in Form von Universitaeten)' Eventuell war's ne schlechte Anspielung ;-)

Obwohl ich mich selbst als 'GPL-Freak' bezeichnen wuerde, sehe ich dennoch nicht ein 'Recht auf Open Source'.
Ich sehe die weite Verbreitung von Open Source eher als gesellschaftliche Veraenderungen, die wir langsam aber sicher durchsetzen sollten - aber ein Grundrecht? Nein.
Der Versuch, die Sourceforge-Software zu verscherbeln, scheint ne Rettung fuer VA Linux zu sein - und GPL Software zu verkaufen _ist_ ein Problem, meiner Meinung nach. Leider. Und das sage ich als GPL Freak.
Dann sollen sie sich eben ein anderes Geschäftsmodell überlegen.
Hier waere die FSF aufgerufen, konstruktve Ideen beizubringen ;-)

Auf gut deutsch: es haben sich keine anderen freien Entwickler mit dem source befasst, es keinen interessiert, und daher kennen auch nur die VA Linux Leute den source.
In dem Fall ist es eher so, dass der Code seit langem nicht veröffentlicht wurde und deswegen gar niemand die Möglichkeit hat, an ihm mitzuentwickeln.
Genau das ist der Knackpunkt - _wenn_ der Source schon so lange nicht mehr veroeffentlicht wurde, warum haben dann GPL-Freaks nicht schon laengst eine bessere Variante erarbeitet?
Sieht mir eigentlich eher nach zu wenig Beteiligung durch andere freie Entwickler aus?
Mir sieht es hingegen nach einem Code aus, der nicht in einem öffentlichen CVS liegt.
Kopiert den letzten sourceforge-Code in ein neues CVS und wartet ab, wer sich darauf stuerzt ;-)
wenn ich an einem Projekt teilnaehme, und - sagen wir mal - weniger als 5% des gesamten sources geschrieben haette, und der Hauptautor des Sources will meine Erlaubnis, seinen Code zusammen mit meinem darin enthaltenen Code zu verkaufen - kein Problem, ich will mir nicht anmassen dem 'Hauptautor' vorzuschreiben, was er mit dem Code machen soll, vor allem, wenn seine Kinder schon am Hungertuch nagen, weil der Papi keine Kohle mit nach Hause bringt.
Du darfst das gerne so sehen, aber der Zweck der GPL ist es eigentlich, dass ein solches Szenario genau dann verhindert werden kann, wenn du das _nicht_ wollen würdest. Und es gibt eben auch Leute, die das nicht wollen, wie in diesem Fall.
Eben - also nehme ich an, dass der Autor des Originaltextes einfach nicht unterschrieben hat - oder doch?
Wenn er natuerlich Code beigetragen hat, als die Software schon nicht mehr unter der GPL stand - selber schuld.
Das siehst für mich eher nach GPL-Verletzung aus als nach "selber schuld".
Wenn der jetzt proprietaere Code noch Patches von anderen enthaelt, die nicht zugestimmt haben - dann ja.

Es ist eine Meinung und die Anregung darüber nachzudenken. Tatsächlich merken es viele Nutzer des Dienstes erst viel später, dass es schwer wird zu migrieren. Es sollte ihnen aber vorher bewusst sein.
Dem Autor taete zum einen etwas weniger Polemik gut, zum anderen sollte er sich mal Gedanken zu machen, wie man die Hardware und die Bandbreite die so ein Server verbraucht, bezahlt - offenbar lebt der Autor in einer Traumwelt, in der Bandbreite und CPU-Zeit nur so vom Himmel faellt, den er scheint sich nicht den *leisesten* Gedanken ueber Geld zu machen.
Nun die Probleme von VA sind aber da, es ging uns darum auf sie aufmerksam zu machen. Nachdem versucht wurde direkt mit VA eine Lösungen zu finden, war eine Veröffentlichung ein wichtiger Schritt. Kopf in den Sand zu stecken nützt da auch nichts.
Und so fehlen auch total die konstruktiven Vorschlaege, wie man so viele Projekte hostet - nur meckern kann ich selber.
Meine Ansicht nach enthält der Artikel jede Menge konstruktiver Vorschläge. Genau den, welchen Du auch machst:

Tja, vermutlich hat sich _weder_ ein anderes Unternehmen gefunden, das diese Informationen hostet, _noch_ haben sich Privatpersonen gefunden, die dieses Wissen hosten wollen und koennen.
Naja, es gibt schon andere Unternehmen, Institutionen und Privatpersonen, welche so etwas fördern. Mehrere sind im Verlauf genannt worden.

Mein Mailaender Ex-Arbeitgeber wollte einmal etwas aehnliches starten, hatte das aber storniert, ich weiss auch nicht, ob er allein auf Basis der Objektionen der FSFE gegen VA's Sourceforge-Reform an einer Reprise des Projektes interessiert ist.
Leider. Aber erzaehlt mir mal, wie die leute das Geld verdienen sollen, um die Bandbreite und Rechenzeit zu bezahlen?

Hmm. Den CVS-tarball kann man sich herunterladen, die mailinglisten - ich habe ein komplettes Backup archiviert, eben weil ich nicht so bloed bin nur auf sourceforge zu vertrauen. Die herausgegeben Datei laedt ein wget-script runter :-)
SourceForge macht nicht den Eindruck sich darum wirklich zu sorgen.
Im uebrigen finde ich es sinnvoll, dass man Projekte nicht mehr von sourceforge entfernen kann - das hab ich gelesen als ich mein erstes Projekt beantragt habe, und ich fand es deshalb gut, damit selbst die alten links bestehen bleiben koennen, _wenn_ ich mal umziehen wollte ;-)
sourceforge ist ja _nicht_nur_ ein Server fuer die Webseiten und den Source, sondern auch ne Projektdatenbank wie Freshmeat etc - selbst wenn ich jetzt ein voellig neues Projekt auf berlios oder savannah aufmachen wuerde - ich wuerde das gleiche auf sourceforge aufmachen und von sf auf berlios verlinken - - damit wird mein neues Projekt auch bei ner Suche auf sf gefunden ;-)

In vielen anderen Faellen von freier Software mag dies funktionieren - und das ist gut so :-)

betreuen (im Sinne von speziellen Interfaces und Userwuenschen): nein

Wie gesagt - ein verteiltes freies Entwicklerwerkzeug auf Peer-to-Peer Basis halte ich fuer die ultimative Loesung, so was wie Lotus Groove (oder besser ;-)

Einige andere Firmen, die pleite gingen und Geschäftsmodelle auf Freier Software hatten sind aus ganz anderen Gründen ruiniert worden. Hauptsächlich waren es die VCs (ID-Pro, Innominate) oder eben das Unverständnis wie man mit Geschäftsmodellen rund um Freie Software eigentlich umgeht (Caldera, VA - zwar noch nicht Pleite, aber unter starkem Druck).
Und dann bitte nicht die Firmen vergessen, die (teilweise schon seit Jahren) erfolgreich Dienstleistungen rund um Freie Software anbieten und Gewinn fahren (z.B. Alcove, Intevation als 'reine' Freie Software Unternehmen).

Diese Unternehmen sind meist essentiell vorsichtiger als andere und gehen den soliden Weg der graduellen Expansion. Wer auf prekaere Weise rapide investiert (z.B. Idealx, Aurora) der kontraktiert eine Diarrhoe.

Wo ordnet man Prosa srl. ein, die erst durch die Annexion durch Linuxcare und deren erranter Europapolitik ruiniert wurden? Vorher existierten da keine gravierende Probleme.

Tja, das hat man sich neulich bei der Podiumsdiskussion auf dem LinuxPark auf der Systems 2001 auch gefragt. :-) Dort wurde klargestellt, dass Caldera tatsächlich nichts von Freie Software versteht. Gemäß der Podiumsbeiträge Calderas ist es Calderas Plan, Linux (wie auch immer) zu proprietariseren und dann als 'ordentliches' Produkt zu vermarkten.

Unternehmensstrategische Entscheidungen die einen Gegner vom Markt fegen können gibt es natürlich immer. Die eigene Strategie muss das berücksichtigen. Manchmnal trifft es 'Unschuldige' wenn der Gegner zu groß ist.

Die Studie ist von MPI für Patentrecht etc. und Frauenhofer ISI im Auftrag des BMWi erstellt worden. Ich habe die über 300 Seiten noch nicht gesichtet, aber der Bereich der Freien Software ist offensichtlich ausführlich berücksichtigt.

Du hast Recht, es hätte ja in der Zeit Änderungen geben können. In wie die die Studie schon vollständig bekannt war, bin ich mir auch nicht komplett sicher. Die Existenz der Studie ist allerdings 3 Monate lang bekannt, die groben Ergebnisse auch.
Voreilige Kommentare spare ich mir, so lange ich das Ding nicht gelesen habe.
Ich erwarte allerdings keine neuen Ergebnisse von der Studie. Zu den Details mag es Interssante Änderungen geben, aber schon die Vertagung der Veröffentlichung war seltsam.

Hi,
zum dem Thema 'Gewoehnung an unfreie Software muss ich mich selbst verbessern, mir ist naemlich was klargeworden:
Gewoehnen != Gewoehnen
Damit meine ich:
a) ich finde nach wie vor nicht, dass ich mit sourceforge - als User von sourceforge - an unfreie Software gewoehnt habe, weil ich persoenlich der Meinung bin, das ich das Webinterface brauche
b) ich gebe aber zu: vermutlich gibt es tatsaechlich eine andere Art der Gewoehnung der, naemlich der, dass sich nicht genuegend Programmierer finden, um sich zusammenzusetzen und um ein freies Gegenstueck zu finden, das ist dann tatsaechlich das gleiche wie bei den Modellern
Ich moechte diesbezueglich meine Aeusserungen wie 'warum setzt sich denn einfach niemand hin und programmiert ein besseres sourceforge in freier Software' zuruecknehmen, da ich erkannt habe, dass b) gilt.

Ueber freie Software und Universitaeten:
Ich bin Co-Entwickler bei Vegastrike, einem 3D-Raumkampfsimulator, einem wunderschoenen 3D-Ballerspiel, eigentlich offtopic (ausser dass es freie Software ist).
Aber heute habe ich erfahren:
Die Haupt-Autoren von Vegastrike sind nicht irgendwelche verrueckten Gamer, die einfach mal so aus Spass ihr eigenes Spiel schreiben wollen.....
Nein, das sind drei Studenten der University of Berkeley, und die machen das nicht nur aus Spass, sondern das ist ein offizielles Projekt im Rahmen eines Computergraphikkurses, und am Ende werden die einen SCHEIN (oder sowas) dafuer kriegen ... das sie ein geiles Spiel unter der GPL geschrieben haben.
Ich fasse es nicht, waere so etwas an deutschen Unis moeglich?????
