Das backend soll das video und audio tag von HTML5 bedienen. Das ist ein großer Fortschritt, da es nun mit Opera [1] wirklich Marktanteil gibt der auf OGG-Formate setzt unabhängig davon, ob die W3C diese explizit empfiehlt.

Und dafür gibt es schon recht viele Sites, die Inhalte auf diese Weise anbieten.
Auch wenn mit Erscheinen dieser Browserversion natürlich nicht urplötzlich alles rosarot wird, ist das meiner Meinung nach doch ein sehr wichtiger Schritt hin zur Akzeptanz dieser Formate.
P.S.: Über Unterstützung für Speex sollte man vielleicht auch noch nachdenken.

Ich kenn die Zahlen nicht genau, aber ich dachte, dass gerade im professionellen Bereich viel Opera genutzt wird. Und auf mobilen Geräten auch...

Natürlich wird niemand dazu gezwungen. Aber sollte der Standard verabschiedet werden und klar sein, dass Firefox nur die Ogg-Formate von Hause aus untersützt, dann werden Seiten, falls sie den Standard implementieren auf jeden Fall Ogg anbieten.
Und bestimmte große Anbieter können durchaus einen Umschwenk auslösen. Google ist z.B. eigentlich für seinen Support offener Standards bekannt. Zusätzlich zu Flash auch HMTL5-Embedded-Video auf youtube und video.google.com anzubieten, sollte - zumindest für neue Inhalte - kein technisches Problem darstellen.

Hm, die Praxis sieht momentan doch so aus, dass in vielen Fällen Sachen mehrfach implementiert werden und bestimmte Features nur bei bestimmte Browsern gehen. Bei Videos setzt sich Flash auch nur langsam durch. Viele Seiten bieten einem Videos immernoch in einer Fülle unterschiedlicher Formate an (auch wenn meistens alle proprietär oder patentiert sind).
Flash als Default anzubieten, heißt ja nicht, dass die Seite nicht auch andere Formate anbieten kann.
Ein weiterer wichtigen Punkt ist die Emergenz des mobilen Computing. Google und Nokia investieren im Moment richtig viel Geld in "Mobile Technologies", die zum großen Teil frei sind. Die begrenzte Rechenkraft/Energieversorgung auf tragbaren Gerät spricht z.B. stark gegen Flash. Fast alle mobilen Browser bauen auf Opera oder Webkit(Nokia S60, Googles Browser für Android) auf. Mozilla will einen mobilen Firefox nachschieben (was wiederum auch von Nokia bezahlt wird)... von IE ist da nirgends die Rede und diese Browser, bzw. die Firmen dahinter sind alle an Effizienz und Interoperabilität interessiert, da sie selbst nicht genug Marktanteil haben um alleine einen "Standard" erzwingen zu können. Die Ogg-Formate können die zentrale Lösung sein, da sie Resourcensparender sind als Alterniven wie Flash oder h264. Und jeder Hersteller kann lizenzgebührenfrei Hardware und Software zum En- und Dekodieren einsetzen.
Da finde ich eher erschreckend wie ablehnend die Freie Software-Gemeinschaft im Moment noch gegenüber Ogg Theora ist. Warum kann mencoder z.B. alle proprietären Video-Codecs erzeugen, aber kein Theora? Es kann noch nicht mal Vorbis enkodieren...

Das man Flash-Support anbietet, heißt nicht, dass man Flash toll findet, sondern nur, dass man - wie du schon gesagt hast - mit Strom schwimmen muss. Flash anzubieten ist also kein Widerspruch dazu Alternativen zu unterstützen.

Du bist da nicht auf einem aktuellen Stand:

Und der noch neuere Stand ist, dass dieser GTK-basierte Gecko-Browser durch den Qt-Port von Firefox ersetzt werden soll, genauso wie die Maemo-Platform höchstwahrscheinlich auf Qt umziehen wird. Das ändert nichts daran, dass dieser Browser theoretisch Theora abspielen können wird. Und den S60-Browser von Nokia gibts auch noch (für Symbian, was übrigens inzwischen auch Nokia gehört und zumindest teilweise befreit werden soll). Der Schritt von WebKit (S60Browser) zu Gecko (Qt-Firefox-Port) geht wohl darauf zurück, dass Nokia den Einfluss von Apple auf Webkit fürchtet, was im positiven bedeutet, dass Nokia Initiativen von Apple zum Etablieren von h264 als Video-Codec hoffentlich nicht unterstützen wird (was auch dumm wäre, da Nokia im Gegensatz zu Apple Lizenzgebühren zahlen müsste).
Google hingegen entwickelt für Android auch einen Webkit-Browser und hat gerade für den Desktop Chrome angekündigt, der Webkit benutzt und vollständig freie Software sein soll. In dem Werbecomic [1] werden explizit offene Standards und Technologien beworben. Proprietäre Plugins (hier wird auch explizit Flash als Plugin in einer youtube Seite gezeigt) werden als einziges Sicherheitsrisiko ihres neuen Browser dargestellt.

Hmpf. Das hatte ich schon fast wieder vergessen. Trotzdem glaube ich, dass die "Allianzen" sich im moment ein wenig verschieben, dadurch das Nokia als Eigentümer und Hersteller von Software in den Markt eingestiegen ist. Offensichtlich wegen Konkurrenzdruck durch das Hardwar/Software-Bundle iPhone und die Android-Software-Platform. Vorher lief auf vielen Nokias fremde Software, so dass sie sich insgesamt um diesen Aspekt weniger Sorgen machen mussten. Der Kauf von Symbian und Trolltech (inklusive QTopia) zeigt, dass Nokia plant mehr Gewicht in die Software-Vertrieb und die Entwicklung zu stecken. Die Prioritäten könnten sich also durchaus bald ändern.

Selber Videos in dem Format anzubieten wäre schonmal ein Anfang, allerdings gibt es AFAICS nur 3 Möglichkeiten überhaupt dirac zu erzeugen: 1) oggconvert [ http://oggconvert.tristanb.net/ ] - hat veraltete dirac- Unterstützung und die Homepage ist mehr als dürftig. 2) MediaCoder [ http://mediacoder.sf.net ] - Gibts nur für Windows 3) von yuv in ein gepatchtes ffmpeg pipen :/
Was wir wirklich bräuchten wäre also Application-level Support für das Format. Wir könnten uns mal erkundigen wie es mit 1) aussieht. Ob das maintained wird und so... vielleicht könnte man die motivieren sich zu beeilen wenn wir ihr Programm danach empfehlen irgendwo auf unseren Seiten (das Programm sieht nämlich theoretisch ganz gut aus). Noch besser wäre aber ordentlicher Support in mplayer/mencoder, da dies IMHO in der Standard unter den Videokodierern ist. LEICHT OT: Genial wäre natürlich auch ein digitaler Konvertierdienst. Darüber hatte ich mit mk schonmal gesprochen. Also ein Service ähnlich www.mux.am der von der FSF(E) gesponsert wird und alles auf Anfrage in ein freies Format konvertiert und einem zuschickt. Auf den Dienst könnte man dann immer verweisen, wenn Leute sich beschweren dass ihre ${FREIESOFTWARE} kein ${MIESESFORMAT} unterstützt und außerdem der Verbreitung von freien Formaten helfen, statt nur Hilfe dabei zu leisten unfreie Formate mit freier Software abzuspielen (was natürlich auch wichtig ist). Aber das weiterzuverfolgen habe ich im Moment keine Zeit für. Werde den Plan aber bald im Wiki zusammenfassen, so dass sich andere vielleicht der Sache annehmen können.

Hab ich auf dem letzten Linux-Tag gemacht. Die Essenz des Gesprächs:
Aus technischer Sicht sei der OGG-Container ein grauenhaftes Format wurde mir erzählt, dann kam eine Palette von Details zu denen ich nichts sagen konnte, da ich die ganzen Fremdwörter noch nie vorher in meinem Leben gehört hatte ;( Außerdem wurde Xiph als Organisation kritisiert, da es ihnen mehr um Patentfreiheit als um "gute Codecs" gehe. Und somit sei das Ogg- Containerformat überhaupt nicht unterstützenswert da es einem Vorschriften bei den Codecs mache. Außerdem seien die Ogg-Codecs wesentlich schwieriger implementierbar als der Rest. Selbst das uralte AVI sei da noch besser.... Ogg Theora sei total veraltet. Man orientiere sich lieber an x264. Das sei qualitativ besser und wegen den Patenten... ja von Ihnen hätte noch keiner Probleme bekommen.
Gegen alle möglichen anderen Sachen hatten die mplayer/libavcodec-Leute aber auch was. Matroska z.B. sei auch ein furchtbares Containerformat, obwohl dieses wenigstens fast alle Codecs unterstütze. Deswegen gäbe es ja das eigene Container-Format NUT.

Das bedeutet m.E. nur das Dekodierungs-Support besteht.
Aber wenn jemand mplayer von svn baut kann er ja mal testen ob das enkodieren klappt.

Kannst du mir ein paar Details dazu schicken (muss auch nicht auf die Liste)?
Also ovc=lavc und lavcopts=vcodec=fflibdirac ? Und das steckt am Ende in ner AVI, oder RAW? Kannst mir auch gleich die ganze Commandline schicken ;)
