Liebe Abonnenten dieser liste, ich fühlte mich gezwungen einen Kleinen Text zu verfassen und würden den nur Ungern unveröffentlicht lassen:
====== Software Driven Obsolescence ======
In kaum einem Geschäftsbereich sind selbst teure Geräte die gerne einmal mehrere hundert bis tausend Euro kosten so kurzlebig wie in der IT. Manches davon ließe sich einfach reparieren wenn man wollte. So gehen bei Computer Mäusen gerne einmal die Kabel kaputt sofern so noch welche haben und bei PC's gibt schon einmal die Stromversorgung oder die Festplatte den Geist auf. Meistens wäre das betroffene Gerät in solchen und noch vielen weiteren Fällen ganz einfach zu reparieren was oft nicht geschieht da Fachkräfte teuer sind und man nicht jeder über die Mittel und Fähigkeiten verfügt so eine Reparatur durch zu führen, und manchmal wollte sich der Besitzer ohnehin schon Längst um ein Neues gerät umschauen.
Es gibt aber auch andere Fälle in denen kein Defekt vorliegt und das gerät Dennoch unbrauchbar geworden ist. Manchmal begründet sich das einfach im technischen Fortschritt und den damit wachsenden Ansprüchen.
Zu oft aber, gibt es keinen zwingenden technischen Grund ein neues Gerät zu kaufen und man kommt dennoch nicht daran vorbei. Meistens ist das darin begründet, dass es keine Aktuelle Software für dieses Gerät gibt oder dieses mit der neuen Software ohne ersichtlichen Grund um vieles langsamer ist.
In diesem Fall möchte ich von Software driven Obsolescence sprechen. Ungeachtet dessen, ob diese bewusst von der Firma geschaffen wurde, es sich also um Planned Obsolescence handelt oder es einen anderen Grund gibt und zum Beispiel der Hardwarehersteller einfach keinen Anreiz hat neue Software zu entwickeln.
Ein kürzlich erst genauer untersuchtes Beispiel stellt die vergleichsweise teure Hardware von Apple dar. Dort wurde festgestellt, dass deren "iPhones" ihre Prozessorleistung drosseln [1], wenn der Akku in die Jahre kommt. Apple bestätigte, dass dieses verhalten durch deren Software herbeigeführt wird und begründet das damit, dass sie damit lediglich abstürze der Hardware verhindern möchten, der Nutzer des Smartfones bekommt jedoch keine Benachrichtigung dass sein Akku nicht mehr so leistungsfähig ist und Deswegen der Prozessor gedrosselt wurde. Dadurch entsteht für den Nutzer der Eindruck, sein "iPhone" sei weniger leistungsfähig als es Tatsächlich ist und der Kauf eines Aktuelleren Modells wird angeregt, beabsichtigt oder auch nicht.
Aber zumindest lässt sich hier die Aktuelle Software installieren was gerade bei Android Geräten nicht Selbstverständlich ist. Dort sind die offiziellen Roms von Geräten welche noch gehandelt werden gerne mal zwei volle Featurereleases hinter der aktuellen Version. So gibt es zum Beispiel für das Fairphone 2 am 20.September.2017 von Offizieller Seite immer noch kein Android 7 obwohl Fairphone die Software aktuell hält und regelmäßig securityupdetes heraus bringt. [2] Es gibt entzwischen Android 8 [3]. Wenn ich das richtig in Erinnerung habe behauptet Fairphone sie würden gerne eine Android 7 Rom herausbringen, dürften aber aus Vertraglichen gründen die Treiber nicht dafür verwenden, die sie zudem nur als binäre Blobs haben wodurch eine Migration ohnehin schwierig sei.
Genau hier sehe ich ein Riesen Problem. Viel zu viel Hardware kritische Komponenten für die es weder Softwareupdates noch die Information was eine Entsprechende Software tun Müsste um die Hardware zu nutzen um mal eben selber eine zu entwickeln. Das Ergebnis sind Weggeworfene Handys die noch Perfekt funktionieren, auf denen nur "das eine App" nicht mehr läuft oder wo der betrieb wegen Sicherheitslücken fahrlässig wäre. (Ich schreibe das im übrigen auf einem Computer mit Intel Prozessor welch Ironie)
Eine Lösung für das Problem scheint nicht in Sicht, dabei gebe es da eine ganz einfache: Eine Verpflichtung der Hardwarehersteller freie Treiber zur Verfügung zu stellen und den Besitzern zu ermöglichen "eigene" Betriebssysteme zu installieren.
Der Trennt scheint aber leider in die andere Richtung zu gehen (Stichwort Radio Lockdown)

Das zum einen, ja. Zum anderen vermute ich mittlerweile, dass das Thema der Weiter- und Wiederverwertung zwar abstrakt gut verständlich ist, aber in der politischen Praxis (die wir bräuchten, um Hardwarehersteller zu einem Umlenken zu bewegen) sehr kompliziert wird.
Das Stichwort Radio Lockdown [1] ist ja bereits gefallen: Dort haben wir es mit einer komplexen EU-Richtlinie zu tun, die in einem Unter-Unterpunkt die Freiheit, auf ein beliebiges Funkgerät Software zu laden, abschaffen könnte. Traurigerweise ist die Expertengruppe, die mit den Details der Definition beschäftigt wurde, selbst von der Vielfältigkeit des Marktes anscheinend überfordert und versteht nicht, wie heute etwa Freie Software von Drittherstellern (egal ob kommerziell oder nicht) mit Hardware interagiert [2]. Auch bei den Auswirkungen auf IT-Sicherheit wurden meiner Meinung nach die komplett falschen Schlüsse gezogen.
Dass bereits politische Entscheider und deren (im besten Fall unabhängige) Experten von der Komplexität der Ausarbeitung gesetzlicher Grundlagen überfordert sind, zeigt für mich, dass es "der Öffentlichkeit" gar nicht anders gehen kann. Solange wir es nicht schaffen, diese Sachverhalte extrem herunterzubrechen, zu emotionalisieren und an realen Beispielen zu erklären, sehe ich wenig Chancen darauf, dass das jemals die kritische Masse an Beachtung finden wird, um einen öffentlichen Aufschrei zu verursachen, der dann wiederum Politiker von selbst veranlasst, aktiv zu werden.
Was können wir derweil tun? Menschen an Schlüsselpositionen aufklären und überzeugen; mit gleichgesinnten Organisationen kooperieren, um Kräfte zu vereinen; an der eigenen Kommunikation tüfteln, um sie einfacher und verständlich zu gestalten. Viele positive Entwicklungen passieren zum Glück auch ohne Aufschrei und Medienrummel, dafür mit kluger Hintergrundarbeit.

Da kann ich nur zustimmen, ich hatte ja die Folien von Max CLT2017 Vortrag zum Thema Radio Lockdown für einen LUG-Vortrag zur Verfügung. Ich dachte das in einem technik interessierten Umfeld wenigstens die Gefahr des Lockdown erkannt wird. Der breite Konsens war aber: "Das wird alles nicht so schlimm, wie Du es malst." In dem Fall war nicht einmal die Bedeutung der 4 Freiheiten oder die Freiheit am Gerät von interesse.
Wie sollte man da jemanden erreichen, der Technik eher unbedacht, als reiner User nutzt? Da kann man das Thema auch noch so weit runterbrechen oder emotionalisieren, da kommt man einfach nicht bis zum Hirn durch.
Was können wir derweil tun? Menschen an Schlüsselpositionen aufklären und überzeugen; mit gleichgesinnten Organisationen kooperieren, um Kräfte zu vereinen; an der eigenen Kommunikation tüfteln, um sie einfacher und verständlich zu gestalten. Viele positive Entwicklungen passieren zum Glück auch ohne Aufschrei und Medienrummel, dafür mit kluger Hintergrundarbeit.
Medienrummel ist ja auch nicht immer ratsam, aber wenn man als Beispiel mal PMPC nimmt, dann kann eine einfach zu verstehende Grundaussage im Zuge einer Kampagne schon sehr viel Symphatie wecken, was es dann auch Entscheidungsträgern leichter macht, in den richtigen Kanon zu verfallen. Unterstützend zur Hintergrundarbeit.

Das habe ich bei Fairephone auch so verstanden und hoffe ein bisschen, dass das Project Treble mit Android 8.1 etwas dagegen steuert, wenn Betriebssystem und TreiberUnterbau zukünftig getrennt sind. Das hilft zwar den Geräte heute nichts, aber vielleicht in der Zukunft? Und vielleicht Projekten wie Fairphone, dass sie ihr Android weiter aktualisieren können, ohne auf den SoC-Hersteller angwiesen zu sein.
Ein anderer Ansatz ist Android Go für leistungsschwache Androiden. Wenn ich das richtig sehe, gibt es das nur für Hersteller, aber vielleicht zukünftig als Custom-ROM? Wobei ich die Herstellung von schnell alternden Geräte eher als Massenproduktion von Elektroschrott sehe. Ich finde diese Billig-Androiden nicht gut.
An der Geschichte mit Apple finde ich beeindruckend, dass sie niemanden über dieses "Feature" informieren, was wahrscheinlich Kalkül ist. Besser die Leute kaufen ein neues Gerät, als dass sie in das Alte einfach einen neuen Akku einsetzen lassen. Daran verdienen vermutlich eher freie Werkstätten als Apple selbst.
Ich finde es schade, wenn Leute ihre alten Computer entsorgen, weil sie mit einem aktuellen Windows nicht mehr richtig funktionieren. Mit Gnu/Linux laufen die dagegen noch super. Windows ist auf dem Desktop aber leider weiter verbreitet. Wenn man Fragen hat und Unterstützung oder Software benötigt, gehen die meisten davon aus, dass sie Hilfe eher mit Windows bekommen und kaufen lieber was Neues, mit 32bit UEFI, Intel Celeron und haben in kürzester Zeit wieder dasselbe Problem, das der Rechner langsamer wird.

Das ganze Thema Software ist den meisten Nutzern von technischen Geräten vermutlich einfach zu abstrakt. Das Gerät, das man kauft, kann man in der Hand halten, oder, wenn es größer ist, zumindest sein Hand drauf legen, und es soll einfach funktionieren. Wenn es das nicht macht, leben sie solange mit den Unzulänglichkeiten, bis es Zeit wird für einen Austausch.
Wenn AnwenderInnen, die technisch nicht so interessiert sind, in der Lage sein sollen, ihre Technologie selbst kontrollieren zu können, brauchen sie vermutlich nicht nur Freie Software, sondern auch Freie Hardware, auf die diese Freie Software läuft, und beides sollte irgendwie einfach Zugänglich sein.
Was können wir derweil tun? Menschen an Schlüsselpositionen aufklären

Leider bleibt nicht viel mehr übrig. In Deutschland wurde dieses Jahr von der Bundesregierung ohne große Gegenwehr der Bevölkerung der Überwachungsstaat weiter ausgebaut. [1] Alexa wird als horchender Lautsprecher vermutlich der Renner unterm Weihnachtsbaum. Die Funktionen sind von den AnwenderInnen so gewollt, bzw. werden in Kauf genommen. [2]

Ja, sehr schade. Aber ich bin ja leider auch so: Datenschutz? Ja klar, aber ich brauche meinen Chromecast um Netflix zu streamen. Freie Software? Unbedingt, aber ich brauche Windows in der VirtualBox oder Wine für diverse Anwendungen und Spiele, die unter Linux nicht laufen. Prekäre Arbeitsbedingungen sind eine Sauerei! Hoffentlich kommt mein Geschenk, dass ich bei Amazon bestellt habe, noch rechtzeitig.

das war anders gemeint: Es geht um Menschen, die sich lieber einen neuen Computer mit Windows, 32bit UEFI und Celeron kaufen, weil sie kein GNU/Linux auf ihrer Kiste wollen und den Dualcore, der mit GNU/Linux noch super mit LibreOffice, Firefox etc. funktionieren würde, lieber wegwerfen.
Ansonsten gebe ich dir Recht: Wenn AnwenderInnen sich für GNU/Linux entscheiden, anstatt wegzuwerfen und neu zu kaufen, dann ist das auch für mich ein Glücksmoment. :-)

Ja. Neulich erst wieder einen gut 8 Jahre alten Dell Businesslaptop weiter gegeben. Dank guter Verarbeitung und einem wahrscheinlichen sorgsamen Umgang beim Empfänger denke ich, das er auch noch zweistellig werden könnte in Benutzung -- und das mit einer gewarteten, freien Debian GNU/Linux.

Das Thema Software-Obsoleszenz und dessen Auswirkungen auf die Nutzungsdauer von Hardware beschäftigt auch den Runden Tisch Reparatur [1], der eine eigene Arbeitsgruppe Software Obsoleszenz ins Leben gerufen hat. ich muss mich selber noch im Detail durcharbeiten, aber es scheint mir viele Aspekte bedacht zu haben und ich habe beim Überfliegen schon einige viel versprechende Ansätze darin gefunden. So wird zum beispiel zu der von dir angesprochenen Treiber-Problematik gefordert: "Zertifizierungen von Drittanbieter-Treibern, damit diese gleichberechtigt mit herstellereigenen Treibern verwendet werden können." aber auch teilweise noch radikalere Forderungen wie die "Offenlegung des Quellcodes bei Einstellung des Supports durch den Hersteller"
Inzwischen hat das Thema sich zum Glück auch schon in gewisse Politikkreise hochgearbeitet, so hat in der Mitte letzten Jahres das Europäische Parlament eine Entschließung verabschiedet in der sie eine “längere Lebensdauer für Produkte” fordert. Darin stellt sie klar, dass die Langlebigkeit elektronischer Produkte nicht nur von der Hard- sondern auch von der Software abhängt und fordert einer geplanten Software-Obsoleszenz entgegenzutreten.
Warum und Wie diese Entwicklung eine große Chance darstellt, die Bedeutung Freier Software in einen Verbraucherschutz-orientierten Diskurs einzubringen und damit neue Allianzen zur Förderung Freier Software zu schmieden habe ich dann auch in meinem Blog festgehalten: https://blog.3rik.cc/2017/07/das-europaische-parlament-unduber-produktlebens...
