Document Freedom Day 2012 järjestetään 28.3.2012. Ketkä olisivat kiinnostuneita tekemään suomalaisen tilaisuuden/kampanjan?
FSFE:llä on jonkin verran budjettia, joten tila ja tarjoilu voidaan järjestää, samoin jos haluaa painattaa jotain flyereita tms. Pienimuotoinen tilaisuus + lehdistötiedote + verkkosivu suomeksi voisi olla hyvä kampanjasetti.
Löytyisikö tekijöitä?
Jos ODT ei yleisty, niin MS Office -monopoli ei murru, joten tämä on tärkeä asia. DFD edistää myös yleisesti avointen rajapintojen asiaa opettamalla miten yksi esimerkki toimii käytännössä.

Yleisellä tasolla https://fsfe.org/projects/os/def.html vastaa joihinkin noista kysymyksistä, muttei ehkä ihan kaikkiin. Koska DTD on FSFE:n projekti, niin aiheesta voi varmaan keskustella (muillakin) FSFE-listoilla.

Esim.: onko zip vapaa formaatti? Sitähän voi kirjoittaa ja lukea vapaalla softalla mutta jos wikipediaan on uskominen niin formaattia alettiin standardoida vasta 2010.

"Vapaa formaatti" termille ei liene täsmällistä määrittelyä, vaan pikemminkin kyse lienee siitä, että onko jokin tiedostomuoto tai rajapinta avoimen standardin mukainen. "Open standard" on mielestäni ihan ok määritelty useammassakin paikassa, esim. FSFE:n toimesta ja EU:n komission European Interoperability Framework 1&2 -versioissakin on EU:n määritelmä.
DFD:n sivuilla on myös http://documentfreedom.org/2011/os.fi.html (ehtisiköhän joku suomentamaan tuon?).
Microsoft tosin yrittää väittää, että termille "open standard" ei ole määritelmää, ja siten yrittää vesittää ettei kenenkään tarvitsisi tai edes voisi vaatia avoimuutta, mutta minusta open standard on kyllä määritelty ihan riittävästi.
Päivän nimi ei kuitenkaan ole avointen standarien päivä, vaan avoimen dokumentin päivä, millä viitataan OpenDocumentiin (http://documentfreedom.org/2011/odf.fi.html). Argumentoinnissa .odt:n puolesta on varmaan aika helppo sanoa, että kilpailija .doc ei ole avoin. Myöskään .docx ei ole avoin, koska se ei noudata standardia (OfficeOpen XML). MS ei käsittääkseni ole vielä julkaissut versiota Officesta joka noudattaisi heidän omaa standardiaan. Sitten kun julkaisevat, niin pitää ryhtyä puolustamaan, että miksi OpenDocument on parempi avoin standardi kuin OfficeOpen XML.
Esim.: onko zip vapaa formaatti? Sitähän voi kirjoittaa ja lukea vapaalla softalla mutta jos wikipediaan on uskominen niin formaattia alettiin standardoida vasta 2010.
En tunne tarkemmin, mutta wikipedian artikkelin mukaan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_(file_format)) määrittely on PKWARE:n julkaisema (appnote.txt-tiedostossa ohjelmien mukana?) ja se on public domain, eli zip-muotoa saa kuka tahansa käyttää vapaasti. Kuten kirjoititkin, riippumattomia ja avoimia implementaatioitakin löytyy.
Ainoa ongelma on, että standardi ei ole toimittajariippumaton, eli se ei ole standardointijärjestön julkaisema. Wikipedia-artikkelin mukaan kun se kävi ISO/IEC JTC 1:n äänestyksessä, niin tulos oli, että formaattia ei haluta standardoida virallisesti vaan ISO/IEC on tyytyväinen PKWARE:n työhön ja zip:iä käytettäessä voidaan viitata ISO/IEC:n päätökseen, että PKWARE:n julkaisema määrittely on hyväksytty ISO/IEC:n työskentelyyn.
Ehkä ulkopuolisille pitää sanoa, että zip ei ole aivan puhdasoppisesti avoin standardi, mutta riittävän avoin että sitä on ok käyttää?
Standardeista puhuttaessa pitäisi periaatteessa myös lisätä mukaan versionumero. Siitä huolimatta, että käytössä on avoin standardi, niin käytännössä ei ehkä kannata käyttää ihan tuoreinta versiota ennen kuin on tarkistettu, että riittävän moni implementaatio on ottanut sen käyttöön. Muistaakseni esim. TLS:n kohdalla oli niin, että IE tukee jo TLS1.2:ta mutta Firefox vasta TLS1.1:stä. Ja PDF:n kohdalla on tietysti niin, että Adoben työkalut tukee aina uusimpia standardiversioita kun taas avoimet kilpailijat tulee pari vuotta perässä.
Suurelle yleisölle uskoisin kuitenkin, että seuraavat esimerkit ovat sopivia yleistyksiä: - odt mielummin kuin doc - html5 mielummin kuin flash tai silverlight - svg mielummin kuin psd - pdf mielummin kuin doc(?) - ogg mielummin kuin mp3
Näillä kun menee aluksi ja asiaan enemmän perehtyville näyttää avointen standardien määritelmää, niin uskoisin että argumentaatio on vahvalla pohjalla.

Yleiset suuntaviivat on suurinpiirtein järkeviä juu mutta mielestäni DFD olisi paljon konkreettisempi loppukäyttäjällekin jos oikeasti listaisimme yleisiä formaatteja ja sitten kommentoisimme miten hyvin ne ovat avoimien standardien mukaisia.

FSFE.org:ssa on aina ollut tuo verbatim-juttu, nyt se on näemmä otettu myös DFD:n sivuille. En ole seurannut asiaa, en tiedä perusteluja. Veikkaisin, että liittyy jotenkin siihen, että yritetään välttää tilanteita, että joku uudelleenjulkaisee muokattua tekstiä ja antaa lähteeksi FSFE:n siten, että yleisö ei ymmärrä mikä oli alun perin FSFE:n "virallinen" kanta ja mikä oli johdannaisteoksen tekijän kanta.

Mä en ole mitenkään mukana tuossa pdfreaders.org tai dfd-porukassa, joten en voi itse ujuttaa tuota sinne, mutta jos liityt heidän sähköpostilistoille ja ajat asiaa, niin minä voin tulla antamaan eksplisiittistä tukea idealle (fwd toki mulle että varmasti bongaan viestisi).
Itse asiassa mulla on tässä sen verran muitakin rautoja tulessa, että en pysty ottamaan vastuueelini DFD-päivän organisointitehtäviä, mutta jos joku muu haluaa ryhtyä veturiksi, niin annan toki tukeni ja tilaan FSFE:ltä rahoitusta tilaan ja tarjoiluun yms Suomen tiimin nimissä.

Eipä toiminut minun (saksalaisessa) passihakemuksessa pari viikkoa sitten. Ei tullut tutkittu onko se minun Okularin (tuskinpas uusin versio) ongelma vai ei standardimukaisen dokumentin syy.
(Teksti kyllä toimii, mutta ei yhtäkään "rasti ruutuun" tallentunut eikä tulostanut. Kuulakärkikynä ratkaisi sen ongelman nopeasti kun paperi kuitenkin tarvittiin allekirjoituksen vuoksi. Mutta ei olisi ollut hyvä mainos vapaalle softalle, oliko syy nyt kenen tahansa.)
Ja passikuvaohjeessa ei edes grafiikka näkynyt kunnolla. Oli tarkoitus tehdä buggeja Okularille, että asia tule ainakin tutkittu, mutta toistaiseksi tarkoituksesksi se on jäänyt...

Standardit on ja tulevat olemaan aina jonkinasteinen viidakko. Tietysti HTML-suunnalla on menty aika pitkälle, kun on ACID-testit ja validaattorit ja ne olisi kiva toki olla muillakin formaateilla, mutta en näe että niiden puuttuminen on niin paha juttu.
Paha juttu on docx:n ja xlsx:n yleisyys, ja se, ettei suuri yleisö ymmärrä miten niitä jujutetaan. Sitten kun ne yrittää käyttää LibreOfficea, niin ne valittaa kuinka huono LibreOffice on kun muotoilut katoaa jne, ymmärtämättä että tietysti katoaa kun käytetään MS:n omistamaa formaattia ja MS yrittää hiekottaa sitä kokoajan.
DFD2012:n sivuston uusimisesta oli keskustelua web@fsfeurope.org -listalla, nyt suosittelen menemään sinne ja esittämään omat mielipiteet, ja kun sivusto on valmis niin eikun ajamaan kampanjaa Suomessakin.
Kukas haluaisi ryhtyä Suomen DFD2012-projektipäälliköksi? ;)
Selkeästi tähän on ihmisillä kiinnostusta, tarvittaisiin vain yksi henkilö master nodeksi organisoimaan toimintaa.

Jos näin on, eikö tämä olisi yksinkertainen viesti, joka olisi yksinkertaisesti toteutettavissa
