Hi.
Here is the drawing my friend drew for us: http://www.cs.tcd.ie/Malcolm.Tyrrell/gnu_harp.png
For the record, his name is Steffen Maarup.
Enjoy,

You know, you're going to have to set up Gnu-Ireland now, just to be able to use the logo :-)

Or it would be eminently suitable for any leaflets / flyers / webpages we could put together to do with 'GNU in Ireland', like the Irish language GNOME translation, for example.
Has anyone else noticed that the gnu's eyes seem to be a yin-yang symbol? Amazing how all gnus end up looking philosophical ;o) On the other hand, in the uncoloured version he bears a passing resemblance to Moomintroll [http://www.io.com/~fazia/images/Finland/moomin/FFMlg.gif]. Hmmm!!!

It is a nice drawing, and I don't want to deminish anybody's well-intended efforts, but I must re-state the concern that basing the FSFE logo on what is essentially an "in" joke is probably a mistake (ie. the whole Gnu thing is not someone the intended audience of most of our public statements will understand - "what does a moose have to do with free software?" etc).

that kicks ass!

"what does a moose have to do with free software?"
``What has a shady guy with a cowboy hat, a bottle with blood spilling out, or the budweiser lizard got to do with free software collections?'' (it doesn't seem to matter)
Satisfying peoples curiosity about our logo will be the least of our tasks. ``It's a gnu. We chose it because GNU is the name of the project that initiated the free software movement and IFSO was founded on the 20th anniversary of the GNU project.''
I think the text graphics are also great, and I think we should use them too (we can have more than one graphic y'know!). A text-less graphic is very good though because it has no language barrier, can be more eye catching, and can be more recognisable at a glance.

Firstly, I assume that your use of FSFE is a typo. I guess you mean IFSO.
I think we are in broad agreement that a Gnu with a harp isn't a suitable IFSO logo. My own reluctance to using it is due to the fact that it implies a stronger connection with the FSF than we can justifiably claim.
On the other hand, I do think this logo would be great for a potential Free Software promotion campaign. I personally think that a Gnu with a harp is a very suitable image for promoting "Free Software in Ireland". We could, for example, stick it on CD covers, t-shirts, web-pages. The harp is an effective image within Ireland. And the Gnu is cute!
