Ciao Fellows!
Con questa e-mail vorrei far partire una discussione su come i Fellows
Italiani possano essere presenti e portare la voce della Free Software
Foundation Europe al LinuxDay[1], che è sicuramente uno degli eventi più
importanti della Community del Software Libero in Italia.
Visto che noi Fellows siamo distribuiti su tutto il territorio, dovrebbe
essere facile organizzare degli stand di presenza a quasi tutte le città
in cui si festeggerà il LinuxDay. Voi cosa ne pensate? Chi sarebbe
interessato a contribuire?

A nome della Software Freedom International ( La società no-profit
america che dal 2004 promuove la giornata mondiale del software libero
), vorrei comunicare a tutti i team che fossero interessati, che sono
aperte le registrazioni sono ufficialmente aperte.
Ricordo, a coloro che non avessero confidenza con questo tipo di
evento che l'SFD non è un Linux Day, e non ne vuole neanche prendere
il posto. L'argomento è il software libero in generale, compreso
quello per piattaforme non Linux (vd "The open CD"). L'evento ha
natura prettamente divulgativa, con particolare attenzione al mondo
della scuola e dell'università, non richiede quindi un particolare
coefficiente tecnico.
Ovviamente, parlare dei sistemi GNU/Linux non è obbligatorio, ma è
fortemente raccomandabile, senza però alcun tipo di restrizione
relativa al tipo di distribuzione.
L'evento è supportato dalla Free Software Foundation, ed è
sponsorizzato a livello internazionale da Google, Linode, Danish Unix
User Group e, come sempre, Canonical.
Vi invito quindi a visitare il sito (

(ricordo, non è necessario essere un lug/fsug/hacklab, basta essere
abbastanza per organizzare un buon evento divulgativo ed essere dotati
di tanta buona volontà) o per maggiori informazioni.
Ricordo inoltre che al fine di essere sicuri di ricevere il materiale
da SFI per il vostro SFD, è necessario iscriversi entro il 31 luglio.

Lo invio un po' per farvi sapere che lo faccio, un po' nel caso conosciate qualcuno a cui potrebbe interessare.

Software libero a Salecina
Un convegno sul software libero per chi non sa niente di informatica, ma si interessa di dove va il mondo.
Il software libero rappresenta un'opportunità per preservare le nostre libertà in un mondo sempre più tecnologico; ma non solo, trasportare le idee che ne sono alla base ad altri campi è fecondo, infatti, in un mondo in evoluzione evolvono anche i concetti di libertà.
Il convegno spiegherà cosa sia il software libero non presupponendo nessuna conoscenza informatica da parte dei partecipanti, si terrà in lingua italiana nell'ultimo fine settimana di settembre, a Maloja in Svizzera, a Salecina: un luogo di incontri, spettacolare dal punto di vista naturale, con una storia alternativa e un presente aperto al nuovo.
Quando: 24-26 settembre 2010 (arrivi al pomeriggio/sera del venerdì 24)

Gentile Ministro Roberto Bizzo,
il 25 maggio 2010 l'autorità del governo regionale di Bolzano ha deciso
di spendere 2.2 milioni di Euro per i prossimi tre anni per rinnovare le
licenze software vendute da Microsoft Ireland, e per comprarne di nuove.
Tutto ciò è avvenuto senza la pubblicazione di un bando di concorso,
rendendo impossibile ai fornitori di software simili concorrenti di fare
le proprie offerte.
Le chiediamo di riconsiderare la sua decisione. Questa influenzerà la
sua posizione strategica per un periodo ben più lungo di quello dei tre
anni di durata delle licenze.
Il 13 giugno 2010, la vice presidentessa della Commissione Europea
Neelie Kroes ha affermato a Bruxelles [1]:
"Molti enti governativi, senza volerlo, si sono ritrovati bloccati
all'interno di tecnologie proprietarie per decadi. Ad un certo punto
la scelta iniziale diventa così radicata che le alternative rischiano
di essere sistematicamente ignorate, indipendentemente dai potenziali
benefici. Questo è uno spreco di denaro pubblico che la maggior parte
degli enti pubblici non si può più permettere."
Con la sua decisione di acquistare Microsoft Sharepoint e il Microsoft
Office Communications Server senza aver considerato le alternative di
Software Libero lei aumenterà la dipendenza del suo ente da Microsoft.
Porterà i suoi sistemi IT verso la strada a senso unico dei formati e
del software proprietari, incatenando i dati delle sue organizzazioni e
quelli dei cittadini di Bolzano.
Lei sta anche correndo il rischio di denunce di gestione impropria
riguardo l'assegnazione degli approvvigionamenti. La lunga causa contro
l'Amministrazione Federale Svizzera [2], ancora in corso, rappresenta un
esempio delle possibili conseguenze legali.
Le decisioni che sta facendo oggi avranno un impatto per anni a venire.
Liberarsi dal lock-in diventerà sempre più costoso con l'andare del
tempo, perché rischia di trasformare i vostri preziosi dati in
immondizia digitale.
Invece di sprecare altri soldi nel tentativo di recuperare i primi, le
chiediamo di ritirarsi dall'accordo con Microsoft, e pubblicare un bando
di concorso pubblico aperto a tutti i fornitori. Nel prendere una
decisione sulla soluzione futura per il suo ente, le chiediamo di
considerare la libertà strategica che il Software Libero, gli Standard
Aperti e i formati file aperti garantiscono, piuttosto che appesantire
la sua dipendenza da un singolo fornitore.
Potrebbe anche voler approfondire le opportunità che questa strategia
potrebbe garantire alle compagnie locali della provincia di
Bolzano-Bozen, la quale si è già riconvertita con successo in un centro
di Software Libero.
Nell'interesse dei cittadini di Bolzano-Bozen, le raccomandiamo di
accettare l'offerta di dialogo a lei estesa dagli esperti locali di
Software Libero del GNU/Linux User Group Bolzano (LUGBZ) e della Free
Software Foundation Europe. Restiamo disponibili a consigliarla nelle
sue opzioni strategiche per l'approvvigionamento di software, e
discutere le opportunità fornite dal Software Libero e dagli Standard
Aperti.
