FSFE: Första kommentar på Microsofts Shared Source-licenser
"Då vi så sällan har anledning att säga något positivt om Microsoft måste jag börja med att gratulera dem", säger Georg Greve, ordförande för Free Software Foundation Europe. "Microsoft verkar till slut ha tagit ett steg framåt på deras långa färd för att ge användare frihet: av de fem publicerade licenserna pekar vår första analys på att två av dem uppfyller definitionen för Fri Programvara."
Enligt FSFEs första titt på licenserna så verkar "Microsoft Permissive License" (Ms-PL) och "Microsoft Community License" (Ms-CL) båda uppfylla de fyra friheterna som definierar Fri Programvara. Specifikt så verkar Ms-CL också implementera en variation av copyleft-id´en som först implementerades av GNU General Public License (GPL).
Givet tidigare Microsoft-uttalanden om Copyleft och speciellt GNU GPL som ett "virus", "cancerartat" eller "kommunistiskt" så är det ett klart framsteg att se Microsoft publicera licenser som applicerar samma principer.
Det är dock inte i publiceringen av licenser, utan i publiceringen av programvara under Fri Programvaru-licenser, som ger människor frihet:
Det är inte speciellt praktiskt om varje företag, administration eller upphovsman publicerade sin egen licens. Det hade varit lämpligare om Microsoft valt att använda GNU General Public License (GPL) och Lesser General Public License (LGPL) för dess Shared Source-program.
Långt över 50% av all Fri Programvara världen över publiceras under dessa välkända licenser som allmänheten, av goda skäl, har tilltro i.
"Microsoft har vandrat en mil och står nu bara några centimeter från GNU (L)GPL. Vi förstår till fullo att Microsoft först försöker testa temperaturen på vattnet i Fri Programvaru-världen med deras lilltå, och vi välkomnar det," fortsätter Greve. "Men tids nog så skulle vi helst se att Microsoft ansluter sig till den globala samlingen av kommersiella aktörer som använder GNU (L)GPL."
"För stunden skulle det vara bra om Microsoft om-licenserar sin portfolio med programvara under antingen Ms-PL eller Ms-CL, men vi måste fortfarande varna människor för att göra dem uppmärksamma på 'Shared Source'-etiketten och titta på de specifika licenserna. De andra tre licenserna i Shared Source-programmet är definitivt proprietära och uppfyller uppenbarligen inte kraven på Fri Programvara." avslutar Greve.
Organisationerna Free Software Foundation kommer att behöva mer tid för att studera dessa licenser och hur de samverkar med andra licenser, så det här är inte en slutgiltig analys -- en sådan analys kan komma att avslöja problem som inte var synliga först.
Microsoft har fortfarande en lång väg att gå, men för stunden verkar det som om de har tagit ett kliv i rätt riktning och Free Software Foundation Europe hoppas att de kommer fortsätta på den väg de satt in på.
