FSF och FSF Europe tillkännager ett projekt för vidareutveckling och publicering av GPL Version 3 (GPLv3)
Stichting NLnet bidrar med 150 000 EUR för att stödja aktiviteterna
Organisationerna Free Software Foundation är stolta över att kunna tillkännage bildandet av ett globalt projekt för vidareutveckling och publicering av GPL Version 3 ("GPL Version 3 Development and Publicity Project").
Projektet kommer under 2006 att samla tusentals organisationer, mjukvaruutvecklare och användare från världens alla hörn i en satsning för att uppdatera världens mest populära licens för Fri Programvara. Projektet kommer att bli en av de största satsningarna som någonsin genomförts för att uppdatera en licens där alla berörda parter kan kommentera utvecklingen.
Systerorganisationerna i USA och Europa är också glada över att kunna tillkännage ett bidrag på 150 000 EUR från Stichting NLnet för att stödja det här unika projektet.
Processen med att uppdatera GPLv3 kommer att övervakas av Free Software Foundation med stöd av dess juridiska ombud Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC). Free Software Foundation Europe kommer att koordinera de Europeiska aktiviteterna i nära samarbete med båda organisationerna och delta i den världsomspännande satsningen.
Peter Brown, VD på Free Software Foundation, säger: "Med publiceringen av GPLv3 siktar vi på att ytterligare internationalisera rörelsen runt Fri Programvara och dess utsträckning. För att utveckla den här nya licensen kommer vi att kontakta grupper runt om i världen för att försäkra oss om deras deltagande i uppdateringen av ett av de viktigaste sociala dokumenten i vår tid."
"Vi arbetar i nära samarbete med med vår systerorganisation och SFLC för att säkerställa att GPLv3 kommer att bemöta de övergripande och nationella Europeiska frågorna," säger Georg Greve, ordförande för FSF Europe, och tillägger, "Europa har en stark gräsrotsrörelse med väldigt skickliga utvecklare av Fri Programvara samt små och medelstora företag som arbetar med Fri Programvara. Det kommer att vara vårt mål att stärka denna utveckling och hjälpa Europeiska regeringar att bygga på den."
GNU General Public License (``GPL''), skriven av Richard M. Stallman, grundaren av GNU-projektet och Free Software Foundation, är grunden och den ledande licensen för rörelsen kring Fri Programvara, säkrandes användares rättigheter att fritt studera, kopiera, modifiera, återanvända, delta med sig av och återdistribuera programvara.
GPL anpassar till det informationsteknologiska området de etiska och vetenskapliga principer om en fri, öppen och samverkande utveckling av det mänskliga kunnandet som är ledande i den kraftiga utvecklingen i områden som matematik, fysik och biologi.
Idag används GPL av tiotusentals mjukvaruprojekt, företag och regeringar världen över och stöds av stora grupper av mjukvaruutvecklare och användare som vill dela med sig av deras arbete till gagna för alla.
GNU-systemet, Linux-kerneln, Samba, MySQL och tusentals andra program licenserade med GPL erbjuder högteknologisk kvalitet så väl som politisk och ekonomisk självständighet. Programvara licenserad med GPL används av, eller byggs in i enheter, allt från mobiltelefoner, PDAer och hemelektronik till stordatorer och superdatorkluster. Självständiga mjukvaruutvecklare runt om i världen, så väl som varje större inköpare eller säljare av IT i företag och en stor andel av de individuella användarna, berörs av GPL.
Den nuvarande versionen av licensen skrevs 1991 och är nu 14 år gammal. Den har blivit ledande för aktiviteterna och arbetet i en stor del av världens företag och regeringar och är nu i behov av en revision.
Stichting NLnet, en icke vinstdrivande organisation stationerad i Nederländerna har som uppdrag att stimulera nätverks-forskning och utveckling i området kring Internet-teknologi. De släpper utvecklad programvara under GPL. http://www.nlnet.nl/
