Praviloma (Android, Maemo) je tako da je sam OS povsem odprt, razni driverji pa so zaprti. O Maemu sicer detajlov ne vem, Android pa ima sistem pravic s katerim developer aplikacije opredeli, kaj točno aplikacija potrebuje, uporabnik pa je pred namestitvijo o tem seznanjen.
Vprašanje ni samo ali je source na voljo, ampak tudi koliko svobode imaš (pravno in de facto) pri uporabi. Npr, če jailbreakaš iPod ali Android, ti pač gre garancija; WebOS (od Palma) in Maemo/MeeGo (Nokia (+ Intel)) pa ti dopuščata prost root dostop brez problemov.

Lahko bi npr. naredili (wiki) page o tem. Če koga zanima imam doma v nemškem Linux Magazine članek, ki primerja Android, Maemo, WebOS, Bada, Limo in FreeSmartphone.org — vsi naj bi bili open source OS za pametne telefone.
