And that Sugru stuff looks great! http://sugru.com/ We occasionally use some rubbery moulding compounds at work, for taking 3D impressions of damaged components, but the chemicals involved are a bit nasty (we are not allowed to take them on scheduled aircraft). If Sugru is benign enough to sell to the public, then it is worth investigating as an alternative.
it looks great - i am thinking of getting some and hacking my earphones into a more comfortable shape for listening while lying down, as they are very uncomfortable while listening to audio books when drifting off to sleep.
