Yes, nice to have a positive "hacker" story - it was just a pity they still inferred that "compute+hacker=evil" ;-)
And that Sugru stuff looks great! http://sugru.com/ We occasionally use some rubbery moulding compounds at work, for taking 3D impressions of damaged components, but the chemicals involved are a bit nasty (we are not allowed to take them on scheduled aircraft). If Sugru is benign enough to sell to the public, then it is worth investigating as an alternative.
