Ha! That video is hilarious! Seems to have worked out very well - gives a good indication of what was involved (and all the hiccups en route).
Current status is that the server is build and installed with CentOS 6. All it needs is some more RAM (as soon as Sheridan finds some), setting up of remote decryption of the root partition, and sorting out remote access (either via port forwarding on the Arcspace router, or dynDNS).
Then we'll have remote access and it should finally be good to go. I'm heading back on Thursday to (hopefully) finish off those bits and pieces.
All in all I feel it went very well!

Hi,
for the fsfe meeting next week (23rd) (if thats right?) I think we should table our ideas for "branding" our email server/service etc. Am putting together some sketches for a logo and site (but am only a beginner at design!) and brand also covers software, exact services offerd, wording of expressing this etc. Not sure what the agenda is specifically tho. Is everyone coming along to that meeting?
Could be a good time to bring buddies along and try and get everyone there as the project is now officially off the ground! A local mail server is great! Yay! Can't wait to get enough to get the fitpc thing, and ECO local mail server! Double yay!
Have a good valentines all!

Excellent.

Unfortunately I will now have to be in Berlin 21-23, in order to attend a sprint for Document Freedom Day.

I agree. Also, Michael De Jong (see FSFE interview: http://blogs.fsfe.org/fellowship-interviews/?p=299) will be in town and can potentially come along to the meeting; he's interested in the hosting project. He's famous for setting up the Unhosted project which is making a big impact on the web by allowing users to store their own data when using web services, instead of having it hosted by a company. Mozilla has already implemented this system for its next generation web-wide login system, that will hopefully eventually replace OpenID.
*Are you guys happy to run the meeting without me, and if so shall I ask Michael to come?*

Yup, I'm heading back over to Arcspace today to (hopefully) finish setup. Out of interest I need to:
- add more RAM to make it faster - install Virtualmin control panel (http://www.virtualmin.com/) so we can configure the server using a web browser - configure secure access via ssh so we can get command line access remotely - try and make the machine remotely accessible by either configuring Arcpsace's router to forward requests from the internet to our server, or use a dns routing service, or both (e.g. http://dyn.com)
Best,
Sam.
not sure we could have a meeting without sam :S Maybe wait a week :)

- add more RAM to make it faster
- install Virtualmin control panel (http://www.virtualmin.com/) so we can
configure the server using a web browser
- configure secure access via ssh so we can get command line access
remotely
- try and make the machine remotely accessible by either configuring
Arcpsace's router to forward requests from the internet to our server, or use a dns routing service, or both (e.g. http://dyn.com)
Best,
Sam.

OK, the server IS in fact accessible via standard SSH. This means we have full, typical, secure remote control of the machine. I tried this yesterday from my mobile, but it looks like a security system (DenyHosts) had been sensibly installed automatically and set to block access from mobile networks.
So, who wants access? I guess we need a policy on how many people can login and how many people are administrators (have root privileges).
Thanks,
Sam.
I carry out a lot of my internet access via a T-Mobile 3G dongle. Does this mean I'd be blocked?
Are you also installing list software, as discussed previously? (eg mailman?) I'd be interested in doing some admin on that, if possible (not that I've used mailman before - but I've had some experience of other systems over the years. And I can always RTFM).
David

Possibly, but only for ssh connections, not for any other services. I think that DenyHosts was responsible, which manages a blacklist of IP addresses and blocks them after a few failed attempts. We can add certain addresses to whitelists, but no doubt your dongle has a dynamic address so this wouldn't help. If the problem persists then we can find a solution of some kind (a proxy, for example).

I haven't installed it yet, but I agree with you that it would be a good idea to offer this service (so long as it doesn't much resources, which it won't unless the lists get very busy).
It would be great if you could administrate them - I'm not sure exactly what's involved but it'll be useful to learn. I think you need to edit text files to add new mailing lists? But that's easy enough and I can add you as a system user as soon as I have access again.
Unfortunately the server hasn't been reachable since about 2 days after I last set it up. I'm not sure why; presumably somehow it got switched off?
We need set up the facility to remotely decrypt the root partition at some point. This looks perfectly possible, but I forgot to do it before. We won't actually be able to use this facility until we have proper, non-pagekite based, access (I'm still waiting to hear back from Arcspace about this), but it would be good to have it ready for when we do have direct access.
Thanks,
Sam.
Re: 3G - I had a similar problem with FTP access to some webspace I have on an easily.co.uk server, for a while. The block of dynamic IP addresses that T-Mobile uses is rather large - and whitelisting was unfeasible. However, I'm now on a different server, and FTP access is fine.
Re: mailman - I'm hoping it can be set up to strip attachhments from emails - which should cut down the traffic somewhat.

I shall be in Berlin next week to work on Document Freedom Day, as you may have read. We had planned to have our Feb meeting on Thursday, but I now won't be able to make it.
MadLab have said that they have 1st March available instead (one week later than scheduled, that would be a week on Thursday).
Yuwei and Anna have asked that the meeting be moved. Is this OK with everyone else? Can you all make it on the 1st?
Thanks,
Sam.

Not necessarily for the next session - but I'd be interested, at some point, in a discussion about the merits and foibles of various programming languages used within the world of free & open source software. Languages seem to rise and fall in popularity - but is that just down to trends in the languages being taught? eg. I well remember from my own student days that there was a sudden push to teach Pascal instead of Fortran to engineers - for writing number-crunching programs - a policy that was rapidly reversed when industry complained about graduates being unable to maintain the huge installed base of legacy Fortran code. What are the best free compilers and interpreters at the moment? What are currently the best languages for cross-platform programming? That sort of thing.

Actually, while I was *STILL NOT SLEEPING* last night, I was thinking about programming languages - I don' really know anything about them! I would LOVE to know about them though, especially about how they get made, by who and for what etc.
Any ideas for who could do a talk on this subject?

OK, I'm at Arcspace, and we have progress!
The server now has a control panel, and should be web accessible. I've used a system called PageKite to achieve this for now, until we can figure out the Arcspace router settings.
The control panel is Virtualmin, and it is incredibly powerful. Amongst many other features, it allows terminal access either view browser or Java, so even though we haven't got normal SSH access yet(remote control of the terminal from another terminal) we have browser based SSH access, which should be just as good.
I still haven't got the additional memory, but the server is running fine with only 760mb for now. I'll do more tomorrow; it's getting late for now.
Out of interest PageKite is a company set up by Bjarni Einarsson, a friend of mine, and FSFE Fellow in Iceland. He had the idea a couple of years ago at FOSDEM, and has since got a grant from the Icelandic Government to continue work on the project. PageKite is 100% Free Software, you just pay for bandwidth. When I asked for support for Freedom Boxes last year, Bjarni hadn't considered it, and added it within ten minutes!
For those with a more technical bent, here are the notes I made during the setup:
Virtualmin: virus scanning off (clamd) spam filter on (spamassassin) MySQL yes PostgreSQL no 512mb RAM mysql max memory usage Used IP address 82.138.218.11 for hostname (DNS records will be based on this in virtualmin, probably won't work) mailboxes and virtual servers used hashed passwords - one way only!
Hardware: disk has many bad sectors - may need replacing
Pagekite: running this command: pagekite ssh://mailpod.pagekite.me AND 10000 https://mailpod.pagekite.me:3000
makes virtualmin accessible via pagekite at this address: https://mailpod.pagekite.me:3000/
I need a rest,
Sam.
