Sorry to hear you've been poorly, Anna. There are some gruesome bugs doing the rounds at the moment...
Yes, nice to have a positive "hacker" story - it was just a pity they still inferred that "compute+hacker=evil" ;-)
And that Sugru stuff looks great! http://sugru.com/ We occasionally use some rubbery moulding compounds at work, for taking 3D impressions of damaged components, but the chemicals involved are a bit nasty (we are not allowed to take them on scheduled aircraft). If Sugru is benign enough to sell to the public, then it is worth investigating as an alternative.
Talking of the Hacker/Maker movement, I'll be popping into the UK Maker Faire later this month, while up in Newcastle. http://www.makerfaireuk.com/about/
It will be interesting to see what an impact free software has had on the wider maker community....

it looks great - i am thinking of getting some and hacking my earphones into a more comfortable shape for listening while lying down, as they are very uncomfortable while listening to audio books when drifting off to sleep.

Another one here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22059514
Hack is still in quotes... but it seems to me like the bbc has had a chance of policy regarding this word. I have seen more and more mentions of it recently.
