1. Offizieller Start des SELF-Projekts
Mit einem Initiationstreffen in Amsterdam und einer anschließenden eintägigen Konferenz in Den Haag wurde das SELF-Projekt gestartet. SELF steht für "Science, Education and Learning in Freedom" (Etwa: Wissenschaft, Bildung und Lernen in Freiheit). Das Projekt soll eine Plattform für freie Unterrichtsmaterialien über Freie Software und Offene Standards werden. Es wird vom sechsten Rahmenprogramm der EU-Kommission finanziell unterstützt. Beteiligt sind Partner aus Bulgarien, Spanien, Schweden, Deutschland, Indien, Argentinien und den Niederlanden. Die FSFE ist mit Georg Greve und Jonas Öberg in allen Arbeitsbereichen des Projektes beteiligt und zeichnet verantwortlich für die Koordination rechtlicher Fragen. Mehr Informationen unter

2. Zweiter Entwurf der GPLv3 vorgestellt
Nach einer Diskussion von etwa sieben Monaten und über tausend Kommentaren, die während des öffentlich ablaufenden Beratungsprozesses abgegeben wurden, hat die Free Software Foundation den zweiten Entwurf von Version 3 der GNU General Public License (GPL) und den ersten Entwurf der GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) Version 3 veröffentlicht. Die LGPL wurde nun so konzipiert, dass sie die GPL um bestimmte, klar definierte Ausnahmen ergänzt.
Ciarán O'Riordan hat eine Liste der Änderungen zwischen dem ersten und zweiten Entwurf der GPLv3, sowie zwischen dem zweiten Entwurf der GPLv3 und der GPLv2, zusammengestellt. Beide stehen auf der GPLv3-Projektseite der FSFE zur Verfügung:

3. Bernhard Reiter an der Universität Bayreuth
Bernhard Reiter wurde von der wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Bayreuth eingeladen, um über Softwarepatente zu sprechen. Nachdem die beiden anderen Sprecher eine allgemeine Einführung in das Themengebiet gaben, konzentrierte er sich in seiner Präsentation auf praktische Auswirkungen der Patentierbarkeit von Software.
4. Freie Software auf der Campus Party in Valencia (Spanien)
Die FSFE nahm aktiv an der zehnten Ausgabe der Campus Party in Valencia teil. Stefano Maffulli sprach in drei Vorträgen über die FSFE sowie über das Fellowship-Programm und die Bedrohung durch DRM-Maßnahmen. Seine Präsentationen werden in Kürze auf der neuen "Advocacy"-Seite auf www.fsfe.org zu finden sein.
5. Expertentreffen zum Internet Governance Forum (IGF)
Eines der Ergebnisse des Weltgipfels der Informationsgesellschaft (WSIS) war die Einführung eines Internet Governance Forums (IGF). Dieses Forum will Raum für Diskussionen bieten und so Konsens über verschiedene Formen der Internetregulierung ermöglichen. Zur Vorbereitung auf das erste IGF in diesem Jahr, das in Athen (Griechenland) stattfinden wird, nahm FSFE-Präsident Georg Greve an einem zweitägigen Expertentreffen teil, auf dem die Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen diskutiert wurden, die das IGF mit sich bringt.
6. Bußgeld von 1,5 Mio EUR pro Tag (insgesamt 280,5 Mio EUR) für Microsoft
Aufgrund ihrer andauernden Weigerung, Schnittstelleninformationen an Wettbewerber weiterzugeben, wurde Microsoft von der EU-Kommission mit einem täglichen Bußgeld von 1,5 Mio Euro belegt, das rückwirkend vom 16. Dezember 2005 zu zahlen ist. Die FSFE ist seit der ursprünglichen Untersuchung im Jahre 2001 in dem Fall aktiv, um die Interessen des Samba-Projekts zu vertreten und zu schützen, das wegen Microsofts Protokollmanipulations-Spielchen in seiner Entwicklung kompatibler Software inzwischen mehr als zehn Jahre hinterherhängt.

7. FSFE-Server sind umgezogen
Am 20. und 21. Juli wurden die Server mit dem größten Teil der FSFE-Infrastruktur in die schwedische Universität Örebro gebracht, die Bandbreite und Platz in ihren Racks zur Verfügung gestellt hat. Die FSFE möchte ihren Dank dafür an die Universität Örebro ausdrücken, dass sie diese Einrichtungen zur Verfügung stellt, und sich auch bei der Universität Göteborg bedanken, die bisher für Bandbreite und Platz gesorgt hatte.
