= FSFE begrüßt mehr Wahlfreiheit für Nutzer; Freie Software von Interoperabilität ausgeschlossen =

Die Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) gratuliert der Europäischen Kommission dazu, daß sie Microsoft dazu gebracht hat, Computer-Nutzern mehr Wahlfreiheit bei Web-Browsern einzuräumen. "Der Auswahlbildschirm wird den Menschen bewußt machen, daß sie selbst die Wahl haben," sagt Karsten Gerloff, FSFEs Präsident. "Wir freuen uns, daß FSFE der Kommission helfen konnte, Microsofts Desktop-Monopol Grenzen zu setzen."
Die Europäische Kommission hat heute verkündet, daß sie im Wettbewerbsverfahren mit Microsoft bezüglich Web-Browsern zu einer Übereinkunft gelangt ist. FSFE war an dem Verfahren als Drittpartei beteiligt. "Microsoft hat seine marktbeherrschende Positon ausgenutzt, um Wettbewerber vom Markt zu verdrängen", so Gerloff. "Die andauernde Weigerung des Unternehmens, sich an offene Standards[1] zu halten, führt dazu, daß viele Webseiten allein mit Internet Explorer funktionieren. Das benachteiligt Nutzer anderer Browser massiv."
== Interoperabilität ==
Die Europäische Kommission untersucht auch, wie Microsoft Wettbewerber daran hindert, ihre Programme mit den Desktop-Angeboten des Software- Monopolisten zusammen arbeiten zu lassen. Microsoft hat nun eine einseitige Verpflichtung angeboten. Doch diese Versprechen sind nutzlos für Freie Software-Entwickler, da sie die kommerzielle Verwendung der angebotenen Informationen verbieten.
FSFEs Rechtsanwalt, der Software-Spezialist Carlo Piana, sagt: "Die Versprechen bezüglich Patenten sind völlig unzureichend, da sie keine kommerzielle Nutzung erlauben. Dies schließt Freie Software-Programme aus, die in vielen Bereichen die wichtigste Konkurrenz zu Microsofts Angeboten darstellen. Statt dessen wird Microsoft Freie Software- Entwickler und ihre Kunden weiterhin mit dubiosen Patentdrohungen belästigen."
FSFE-Präsident Karsten Gerloff kommentiert: "Wir begrüßen die Entscheidung der EU-Kommission, das Interoperabilitäts-Verfahren gegen Microsoft weiterlaufen zu lassen und zu beobachten, ob Microsofts Versprechen wirklich den Wettbewerb fördern. Wir sind zuversichtlich, daß die Kommission eingreifen wird, wenn es keine Verbesserung für Freie Software gibt."
