1. Zwei glückliche Fellows gewinnen ein Notebook
Das Fellowship ist von größter Bedeutung, um die Aktivitäten der Free Software Foundation fortführen zu können. Aus diesem Grund bemüht sich die FSFE, auf angemessene Art und Weise all jenen zu danken, die beigetreten sind: In diesem Jahr wurden zwei HP Compaq Notebooks gestiftet, um sie unter allen Fellows zu verlosen. Die Gewinner der Verlosung sind Andrea Di Dato aus Italien und Wouter van Heyst aus den Niederlanden. Noch einmal herzlichen Glückwunsch und viel Spaß mit euren neuen Geräten!

2. Giacomo Poderi beginnt Praktikum bei der FSFE
Die Free Software Foundation Europe begrüßt Giacomo Poderi als ihren neuen Praktikanten. Giacomo lebt in Zürich und arbeitet von April bis August 2006 für die FSFE. Seine Hauptaufgabe besteht in der administrativen Unterstützung des Präsidenten, des Büros und des gesamten FSFE-Teams. Giacomo hat Philosophie in Bologna/Italien studiert und entschied sich für das Praktikum bei der FSFE, weil es ihm ermöglicht, an einigen Prozessen teilzuhaben, die tief in sozialen und technischen Aspekten des täglichen Lebens vewurzelt sind.
Die FSFE dankt Alexander Finkenberger für die wertvolle Arbeit, die er während seines Praktikums, welches im März endete, geleistet hat. Alexander hat sich entschieden, seine Arbeit für die FSFE auf ehrenamtlicher Basis fortzusetzen und verbleibt im Kernteam der FSFE.
3. Das Kernteam der FSFE wächst weiter
Antonella Beccaria, Cristian Rigamonti und Patrick Ohnewein traten dem Kernteam der FSFE bei. Alle drei unterstützen Freie Software seit mehreren Jahren aktiv. Gemeinsam mit Stefano Maffulli machen sie Italien zu einem wichtigen und starken Standbein der Free Software Foundation Europe.
4. Ciarán O'Riordan und Gareth Bowker sprechen in London
Am 7. April veranstaltete die "British Computer Society" einen Abend zum Thema Freie Software. Dabei präsentierte Ciarán O'Riordan die Arbeit der FSFE gegen Softwarepatente und informierte über die GPLv3. Gareth Bowker referierte über Urheberrechte und erklärte, wie einschränkend sich DRM (Digital Restriction Managment) für Computernutzer auswirkt. Beide beantworteten Fragen, und die Diskussion mit den Anwesenden setzte sich noch lange Zeit fort.
5. Das "Free Software Forum" in Brasilien
Georg Greve und Ciarán O'Riordan nahmen an der 7. Auflage des Free Software Forums (FISL) im brasilianischen Porto Alegre teil. Georg Greve hielt eine der Eröffnungsreden mit dem Titel "Freie Software - soziale Bewegung oder technologische Revolution?". Er war ebenfalls an den Sitzungen über die Free Software Foundation Latin America, Distributionen mit 100% Freier Software und dem "license compatibility panel" für die zweite internationale Konferenz zur GPLv3 beteiligt. Ciarán O'Riordan sprach über den Kampf gegen Softwarepatente und nahm in verschiedenen Funktionen an der GPLv3-Konferenz teil. Neben diesen öffentlichen Auftritten waren beide auch um die Stärkung des internationalen Freie-Software-Netzwerks bemüht, indem sie mit der Schwesterorganisation der FSFE, der FSF Latin America, und der einheimischen Freie-Software-Gemeinschaft zusammenarbeiteten.
6. "Access to Knowledge" - Konferenz in den USA
Das "Information Society Project" der Yale Law School veranstaltete vom 21.-23. April eine wegweisende Konferenz über den Zugang zu Wissen, "Access to Knowledge" (A2K). Karsten Gerloff moderierte eine Podiumsdiskussion über Lizenzierungsrahmenwerke für den Zugang zu Wissen ("Licensing Frameworks for Access to Knowledge"). Die Sprecher untersuchten die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Lizenzen bei der Regulierung von Wissen. Dabei stand die Debatte um die Grenzen des Creative-Commons-Konzeptes im Mittelpunkt.
Die Konferenz stellte eine großartige Möglichkeit für Aktivisten und Akademiker im A2K-Bereich dar, miteinander in Kontakt zu kommen. Die Organisatoren haben den größten Teil der Konferenz in einem Öffentlichen Wiki dokumentiert:

7. Anhörung zum Kartellrechtsverfahren gegen Microsoft
Nach vielen Jahren der Untersuchung, Jahren der Rechtsstreitigkeiten und buchstäblich Milliarden von Euro, die Microsoft zur Aufrechterhaltung seines Monopols ausgeben hatte, trat die 13-köpfige Große Kammer des Europäische Gerichtshof zu einer einwöchigen Anhörung zusammen. Der Zweck dieser Anhörung bestand in einer Entscheidung darüber, ob Mircosofts Anschuldigungen einer unfairen Behandlung und von Fehlern in der Beurteilung der Europäischen Kommission begründet sind und deren Entscheidung aufgehoben oder modifiziert werden soll.
In enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Samba Team hat die FSFE ein Team von fünf Person nach Luxemburg entsandt, um die Kommissionsentscheidung zu verteidigen: Begleitet von dem Präsidenten der FSFE, Georg Greve, dem zuständigen Anwalt der FSFE, Carlo Piana, und den Medienkoordinatoren der FSFE, Joachim Jakobs und Antonella Beccaria, sprach der Gründer des Sambaprojektes, Andrew Tridgell, im Namen der FSFE. Seine klaren und durchdachten Ausführungen halfen sehr, zahlreiche falsche Behauptungen Microsofts zu widerlegen. Eine Entscheidung wird in diesem Jahr erwartet, und dank der Arbeit von FSFE und dem Samba-Team scheint ein leichter Optimismus gerechtfertigt zu sein.
