Die Free Software Foundation Europe schlägt vor, dass Oracle MySQL in die Hände einer unabhängigen gemeinnützigen Organisation geben soll. Die Freie-Software-Gemeinschaft könnte dann das volle Entwicklungspotential von MySQL ausschöpfen, und Oracle müsste nicht mehr befürchten, dass ein Konkurrent das Datenbankprojekt übernimmt.
"Wettbewerb im Softwaremarkt ist ein wichtiger Antriebsfaktor für Innovation", sagt Karsten Gerloff, Präsident der Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE). "Das Schicksal eines Projektes wie MySQL sollte nie von einem einzelnen Unternehmen abhängen."
Wenn die Probleme rund um MySQL aus dem Weg geräumt sind, könnte Oracle rasch den Kauf von Sun Microsystems abschließen und so weitere Verluste vermeiden.

MySQL ist der Stolperstein für den Kauf von Sun Microsystems durch Oracle. Mit diesem Kauf würde der größte Hersteller von proprietären Datenbanken zusätzlich noch die Kontrolle über MySQL erlangen, ein großes Freie-Software-Datenbankprojekt. Die Europäische Kommission befürchtet negative Auswirkungen auf den Wettbewerb und hat dem Kauf bisher noch nicht zugestimmt. Gleichzeitig verliert Sun durch die Verzögerungen laufend Geld und Arbeitsplätze.
