1. Gareth Bowker tritt der Generalversammlung der FSFE bei
Nachdem Gareth Bowker schon für eine lange Zeit im FSFE-Team gearbeitet hat, ist die Free Software Foundation Europe nun umso glücklicher, bekannt geben zu können, dass er der Generalversammlung beigetreten ist. Mit diesem Schritt bekennt sich Gareth auf lange Sicht zur Arbeit der FSFE und akzeptiert hiermit auch rechtliche und politische Mitverantwortung für die Projekte der FSFE.
Sein Engagement stärkt die Funktion der FSFE in Großbritannien und wird herzlichst von allen im Team begrüßt.
2. Die Free Knowledge Foundation verbündet sich mit der FSFE
Die Free Knowledge Foundation (FKF), eine gemeinnützige Organisation, ist nun die erste mit der FSFE assoziierte Organisation in Spanien. Sowohl die FKF als auch die FSFE freuen sich auf die enge Kooperation und viele fruchtbare Projekte, die nun anstehen. Gemeinsam mit der FKF wird nun der nächsten Schritt die Bildung eines spanischen Teams der FSFE sein.

3. Konsultationen der VN über Internet Governance Forum (IGF)
Als eines der Ergebnisse des UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) hat UN-Generalsekretär Kofi Annan gefordert, Konsultationen über die Bildung eines Internet Governance Forums zu organisieren. Die Gründe für diese Konsultationen waren die Festlegung des Geltungsbereiches und des Mandats dieses IGF. Die Aussagen dazu waren ziemlich unterschiedlich und reichten thematisch von "Fragen über Domainnamen" bis hin zu "allen Aspekten des Internet, einschließlich Spam, Cyberkriminalität, Privatsphäre und Virtuellen (online) Identitäten" sowie bezüglich des Mandats von einem "reinen Diskussionsforum" bis hin zu einem "globalen, die öffentliche Ordnung bestimmenden Körper". Der Präsident der FSFE, Georg Greve, nahm an dem Treffen teil, um dort die Interessen Freier Software zu vertreten. 4. VN WIPO: Provisional Committee on a Development Agenda (PCDA)
Die Reihe von "Inter-Governmental Inter-Sessional Meetings" (IIM), die im vergangenen Jahr eine Reform der "United Nations World Intellectual Property Organisation" (WIPO) initiieren sollten, endeten bekanntlich in einer Sackgasse - hauptsächlich durch die Blockade der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Als ein Ergebnis dessen entschied die Generalversammlung, zweiwöchige PCDA-Treffen in Genf abzuhalten, wobei das erste im letzten Monat stattfand. Die FSFE wurde durch ihren Präsidenten Georg Greve sowie den ehemaligen Praktikanten und mittlerweile Teammitglied gewordenen Karsten Gerloff repräsentiert, der hart daran gearbeitet hat, die Reform in der WIPO durchzusetzen. 5. Büro der FSFE zieht nach Düsseldorf um
Nach ihrer Gründung 2001 unterhielt die Free Software Foundation Europe ein kleines Büro für Vertriebs- und administrative Fragen in der Villa Vogelsang in Essen. Dieses Büro wurde freundlicherweise durch Reinhard Wiesemann, dem visionären Förderer der FSFE, bereitgestellt. Reinhard hat es auch ermöglicht, dass Martin Gerwinski -- bezahlt durch das Linuxhotel -- ebenfalls einen Teil seiner Zeit für Büroangelegenheiten der FSFE aufbringen konnte. Den Rest seiner Zeit brachte Martin Gerwinski ehrenamtlich auf. Sowohl Martin als auch Reinhard verdienen und erhalten unseren aufrichtigen Dank und unsere Anerkennung für ihren wichtigen Beitrag.
Nachdem die FSFE in den vergangenen Jahren so schnell gewachsen ist, kann die Büroarbeit nicht länger auf dieser Basis bewältigt werden. Daher freut sich die FSFE, Reiner Kersten vorzustellen. Er wurde in die bezahlte Belegschaft der FSFE aufgenommen, um sich um die notwendige administrative Arbeit zu kümmern, und arbeitet gemeinsam mit dem Büroleiter der FSFE, Werner Koch, daran, das neue Büro in Düsseldorf einzurichten.
6. Zweites Fellowship-Treffen in Berlin
Zum nunmehr zweiten Mal haben sich in Berlin Fellows zusammengefunden, um ihre Aktivitäten zu diskutieren und zu koordinieren. Die FSFE ist glücklich darüber, zu sehen, wie Fellows die Initiative ergreifen, und arbeitet mit ihnen zusammen, damit die Infrastruktur verbessert wird, die dann von den Fellows frei benützt werden kann. Derzeit wird an Ad-Hoc-Mailinglisten gearbeitet, und auch ein Wiki ist geplant.
7. Kartellrechtsverfahren gegen Microsoft: Zwei Millionen Euro täglich
Im letzten Monat entschloss sich die Europäische Kommission dazu, es Microsoft nicht länger zu erlauben, die Auflagen aus dem Kartellrechtsverfahren zu ignorieren. Die EK stellt MS vor die Auflage, zwei Millionen Euro für jeden Tag zu bezahlen, an dem die Auflagen unerfüllt bleiben. Microsoft versucht immer noch, auf Zeit zu spielen. Daher spricht nun die FSFE ihre Unterstützung für die EK aus:

8. FSFE auf der FOSDEM
Wie in jedem Jahr nahm die FSFE am europäischen Klassiker teil: der FOSDEM in Brüssel. Georg Greve, Ciraran O'Riordan, Henrik Sandklef, Pablo Machón und Reinhard Müller stellten verschiedene Aspekte der FSFE-Arbeit in einer Serie von Kurzvorträgen vor. Volker Dormeyer, der Koordinator der Messestände und langjähriges Teammitglied der FSFE, leistete wieder hervorragende Arbeit bei der Organisation des Standes auf der FOSDEM. Ein Team von 16 Personen der FSFE und assoziierten Organisationen, besonders der Free Knowledge Foundation und Wilhelmtux, fand sich zu diesem Ereignis zusammen und verhalfen ihm zu einem großen Erfolg.
9. FSFE organisiert Runden Tisch zu Softwarepatenten in Brüssel
Die ursprünglich hinter der Maske sogenannter "computerimplementierter Erfindungen" versteckten Softwarepatente lauern nun erneut hinter den Plänen der Europäischen Kommission für ein "Gemeinschaftspatent", für das sie um Eingaben ersucht. Die FSFE nahm dies zum Anlass, einen Runden Tisch zu organisieren, an dem Francisco Mingorance (Business Software Alliance), Pieter Hintjens (Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure) und Ciaran O'Riordan (Free Software Foundation Europe) teilnahmen. Der deutsche Journalist Stefan Krempl moderierte die Diskussion, zu der Journalisten aus ganz Europa eingeladen waren.
10. Fellowship: Gewinne ein Dreimonatsabo für LWN und ein Notebook!
Das Fellowship der FSFE ist ein wesentlicher Teil und eine wichtige Grundlage der Arbeit der FSFE. Sie macht vieles davon überhaupt erst möglich und hilft dabei, die Anzahl der Menschen sichtbar zu machen, die sich für diese Fragen einsetzen. Die FSFE nimmt mit großer Dankbarkeit die Hilfe und Unterstützung von allen Fellows entgegen und ist glücklich, die Gemeinschaft für Digitale Freiheit weiter wachsen zu sehen.
