FSFE wird Beobachter der WIPO
Die World Intellectual Property Organization ("Weltorganisation für geistiges Eigentum", WIPO) ist eine von 16 spezialisierten Agenturen der Vereinten Nationen, die hauptsächlich mit den globalen Regeln zur Gewährung von Monopolen auf Wissen und andere "Virtualitäten" befasst ist. Auf ihrem Weg durch die Instanzen bis zur lokalen Gesetzgebung gestalten diese Regeln den Weg der Menschheit zur Wissensgesellschaft.
Es gibt viele aktuelle Gefahren für die Freiheit unserer Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft in einer wissensbasierten Gesellschaft -- von der European Copyright Directive (EUCD) bis hin zur Ausdehnung der Patentierbarkeit -- die zumindest ideologisch ihren Ursprung auf dieser Ebene haben und deren Diskussion abgeschlossen ist, wenn sie das nationale Recht erreichen. Dies läßt sehr wenig Raum, um die schädlichen Effekte zu begrenzen.
Aus diesem Grund hat die FSFE 2003 den Status eines Beobachters bei der WIPO beantragt, welchem während der Versammlung der WIPO-Mitgliedsstaaten vom 27. September bis 5. Oktober 2004 zugestimmt wurde.
Innerhalb des FSFE WIPO Projektteams [1] wird die FSFE nun gemeinsam mit anderen Teilnehmern daran arbeiten, die WIPO von einer Organisation mit dem ausschließlichen Ziel der Ausweitung von Monopolen auf Wissen hin zu einer Organisation mit dem Ziel der Erweiterung des geistigen Reichtums der gesamten Menschheit mit Hilfe flexiblerer, nachhaltigerer und effektiverer Werkzeuge zu ändern. "Wann immer die Zivilgesellschaft während des Weltgipfels zur Informationsgesellschaft (WSIS) der Vereintein Nationen versucht hat, den Themenbereich der Patente, Urheberrechte oder Warenzeichen anzusprechen, wurde uns mitgeteilt, daß die WIPO der Ort für diese Diskussionen und Änderungen sei", erklärt Georg Greve, Präsident der FSFE.
Seine Schlußfolgerung: "Wenn WIPO der Ort für diese Fragen ist, dann müssen wir dort hin, um die Freiheit im digitalen Zeitalter zu bewahren."
